New survey suggests 36% believe in UFOs

According to the results of a new National Geographic survey, over 36% of Americans believe in UFOs.

Crucially however the poll failed to define 'UFO', meaning that it doesn't necessarily mean that those who voted 'yes' believe such objects to be extraterrestrial in origin. According to the results, 10% believe that they've actually witnessed a UFO first hand while nearly four-fifths were under the impression that the government was withholding information on the topic.

In another question voters were asked who they would rather see leading the country in the event of an alien invasion, with Obama winning with 65% of the vote. National Geographic Senior Vice President Brad Dancer was keen however to emphasise that the poll was intended only as a bit of fun and that it shouldn't be taken too seriously. "We were trying to have a little fun and see if pop culture references have had an impact on people's beliefs," he said. "It's intended as a fun survey of public opinion."

"Thirty-six percent of Americans, about 80 million people, believe UFOs exist, and a tenth believe they have spotted one, a new National Geographic poll shows."

The best polling service in the U.S. in the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, but to my knowledge they have never done a survey about aliens or UFOs.

Here's the one I like.... "nearly four-fifths of respondents said they believe the government has concealed information about UFOs from the public." ROFLMAO!!!! That's the polite way to say it. Let me translate that into a language called "curbstone venacular": " 80% of the people think the Eph'n government L I E S " Suddenly,,,, I don't feel so all alone. HOLD me! :--) Really the goverments of the world lie to us. And with hold information well I never LOL

We do know more about the surface of the moon then our oceans.

I see yer from NS, Canada. I'm sure U know of Shag Harbor. I am well-aware of the Shag Harbour incident, yes; however, I am not very keen on accepting the postulation that it is "otherworldly". I would be more inclined to believe that it was merely the result of a top-secret military craft test gone horribly astray, much rather than a space ship crash with little green men.

Well..technically speaking, any object that is not readily identifiable IS a UFO but that acronym is not synonymous with aliens so there is nothing to actually "believe" in. I do think that with enough scientific study and diligence, everything in the sky CAN be explained. I think that humans don't have the capacity to scientifically study some of the anomalities apparently found in our skies.

I find it interesting that the 1947 Gallup Poll did not even mention the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis as a possible explanation for UFOs. No answer, don't know 33% Imagination, optical illusions, mirages 29% Hoax 10% U.S. secret weapon 15% Weather forecasting device 3% Russian secret weapon 1% Searchlights on airplanes 2% Other explanations 9% Now I'm going to tell you why I think that is, even though my answer will be considered somewhat startling and revisionist. The ETH was first formulated by the military and within the military, and then gradually leaked out to the public. I ... [More]

Many centuries of brainwash has been put upon people with the help of religion being the first authority. Then government coming in second. Why would any high authority want people to believe in extraterrestials? Do you know the chaos it would bring? Many religious people, which is most of the world, do not believe in ETs. And believe it or not, many believe if ETs do exist that means they can throw out their perception of god. Which I find completely stupid and irrelevent. Say if you did believe in a higher being, and your book tells you how the world started, why can't they accept that this ... [More]
