The makers of the latest Indiana Jones film are being sued over their use of a replica crystal skull.

Archaeologist Dr. Jaime Awe has claimed that the model crystal skull used in the film is a replica of a real crystal skull stolen 88 years ago and that the filmmakers have no right to use its likeness. The real skull is currently in the possession of a treasure-hunting family who are also being sued by Dr. Awe in an effort to elicit its return.

"LucasFilm never sought, nor was given permission to utilise the Mitchell-Hedges Skull or its likeness in the film," the lawsuit states. "To date, Belize has not participated in any of the profits derived from the sale of the film or the rights thereto."

"A Belize archaeologist is suing the makers of a blockbuster ‘Indiana Jones’ film for using a likeness of a so-called Crystal Skull, which he says is a stolen national treasure."

Seems to me no matter what the legal system this guy hasnt a leg to stand on. There is no actual likeness between the 2 skulls and even if there was Lucas Film was not responsible for the alleged removal of the MH skull from the original dig (if you believe it is a real find) and there is enough circumstantial evidence it was actually made in France to Mitchell- Hedges specifications. Im just not sure if he is greedy and stupid or smart and its some sort of publicity wheeze and he has a book coming out.

indiana jones crystal skull F.A. Mitchell-Hedges Skull, Hmm, were is the likeness?? The teeth maybe or the eye sockets....sort of. But I think the person suing is interested in money and did not do his research. Although I have to agree that many ancient artifacts were stolen from their place of origin some probably are still in numbered boxes never researched, examine or placed on exhibit. A great many looted treasures are in the Vatican and who really knows what they are or maybe a part of human history and origins. The church is very careful of what they display so that it does not interfer... [More]

Of course they look alike, they are both skulls.

Now this is interesting. It seems that when the skull was "found," Belize wasn't Belize, it was British Honduras, a crown colony of Great Britain. How can something be a national treasure of a country that didn't exist when it was supposedly taken from it? This is going to get thrown out of court so hard it'll bounce.

Who in the hell gave Dr. Awe his nuts to sue anybody over what is not even his.He will loose and really he needs to show ownership papers because he's acting like he made it and in that case for every ancient artifact in movie history sue them...WHATEVER!

I would've sued Lucas for leaps of logic in the movie. Like say... surviving a nuke in a FRIDGE!
