If ever our message is recieved by another intelligent civilization, I do hope they're friendly. Imagine our intergalactic message being recieved by a "bent on world domination" species. It would be a real life re-enactement of "War of the Worlds". And no, it's not paranoia, just an over-active imagination.

I would think a Laser Beam would not make it to far in to the Universe. Space is not empty , but full of rocks , gases , and charged particles of all types. Plus The two Voyagers have reported strong magnetic bubbles at least on the edge of our solar system. I think this beam will be blocked or diffused long before any one will pick it up. IMO. A promotional stunt at best.
