Sadly, after he walked on the Moon he knew NASA wouldn't let him do anything else, he was now a "Hero". I recall seeing him talk to someone once about wishing he could go back and undo that accomplishment. While it was the high point of his career it was also the end of it. Fame is a double edged sword.
