17-year periodical cicadas



After an absence of 17 years, over a billion cicadas emerge from the ground at the same time.

These insects are so facilitating, and destructive at the same time. I must admit I like hearing their calls when they are adults and watching all the birds have a feast. I see some people follow the birds' lead and eat them too! It's said they taste like shrimp with a peanut flavor when bodies are sautéed in butter.

If you catch them before they shed their skin when they first come out of the ground they are good eating fried up. That should generate the ewwwww factor.
