Outwitted by a small, black cat called Elsa.

    By Waspie_Dwarf

I have a small, black cat named Elsa. She is good company, generally very quiet and very well natured (although not always so well behaved). We are, however, in a battle of wits over a chair, and I think I am losing. A few weeks ago a relative of mine moved and had more chairs than was strictly necessary for her smaller flat. The chairs are much newer than the ones I had and so she gave them to me. That is where the battle started. Initially Elsa was happy to claim a chair of her

What pro-lifers know about abortion (seeing life from both sides)

What pro-lifers know about abortion (Seeing life from both sides) This is known by pro-lifers. That many women who get abortion are often under tremendous stress to undergo this procedure. Their families, their friends, lovers and society in general encourages that they ‘get on with their life’ and just do it. Pro-lifers also know that many women are then left alone to deal with the aftermath of the procedure, where they end the life in their womb. Where these women come to under

Powers

I know I am going to sound like the next person who needs attention but I'm not. Writing this was hard enough. Recently strange things started to happen. Whenever I said something it would happen on the spot. I have some examples. Example 1 Me and my friend were on our way to visit a friend who was in the hospital. We were on our bike and we needed to cross over it was a two way splitting. There was no car to be seen from no side but I was said to my friend and these were my exact words: "You

whats haunting me?

I am a 16 year old girl and am negatively obsessed about being haunted by a scary spirit or 'shadow'. the earliest experience I can remember was when I was about 10 years old in a different house and I was tormented by this figure. I remember going to sleep every night to then wake up late in the night to a 'grim reaper/shadow figure' opposite me in the other end of the room by the wardrobe. i would then in fear bury my head in the quilt and look up to find the figure slowly moving towards me. s

If you live my word

If you live His word I believe that there is something to the apparitions at Medjugorje, and the Blessed Mother is being used by God to try to reach us and bring us all into a deep loving relationship with Jesus. Many non-Catholics go there, as well as others from other religions. Muslims and Hindus and those who are more agnostic, yet each find that they come closer to God, many coming to Jesus. I think this message is truly beautiful, one of the best I believe that have come out of

Wrath

Wrath Wrath is a scary word, and when used in relation to God it can be terrifying. In the Old Testament it is used quite a bit, along with severe punishments towards the people of Israel. I have to be honest and say that apart from the psalms, I do not spend much time in the Old Testament; so much that I don’t understand, it being written from a cultural perspective that I have a hard time understanding. God language can only come through the person or culture where they are in thei

Deeply rooted

Deeply rooted I was at Vina for three days when Bernard gave me a tour of the grounds around the Monastery. As we drove around he pointed out the trees, some being very old. He then pointed to a small group of trees, large ones or so it seemed to me. Then he told me that they were 400 year old Redwood trees. I had a sudden change of perspective and instead of seeing them as rather large trees and ancient; I saw them as being young and small, far from the height that they would reach if

Misuse of Holy Books

Misuse of Holy Books I have had over the years, trouble with Christian hard liner's, in the way that they not only use scriptures, but how they actually treat others in using the Bible in attacking others. I have always found this interesting, since attacking only raises up defenses, and in the end, nothing is accomplished. I suppose the main problem with this approach is that certain scriptures are gathered together, lined up, loaded, and then used as an arsenal to blast others. Christ

The Curse of Bodie

Exactly what is a curse? How does it work? What makes it supernatural? These, like many other questions, I had asked when I first came across the concept of a curse. Over the years, I had learned it could also be a hex or jinx where supernatural forces are invoked to inflict harm, misfortune or punishment on a person or people by spells, rituals, pact, spirit or divine being. Curses could even be placed on objects or places, but could they follow you home? The next installment in the series of c

The numbing of mindfulness

The numbing of mindfulness When I was a young monk, here for only a short time, I noticed on my way to Vespers (evening prayer at 5:20) a plant set out on one of the benches that are scattered around our cloister garden. I was looking at it; it was not a very impressive looking specimen, at least in my estimation. Fr. Paul walked by who was in charge of our gardens. He was also a bonsai master and was one of the reasons that bonsai become so popular in the Southeast. So I asked Paul why

Obstacles to Contemplative prayer

Obstacles to Contemplative prayer We are all called to be contemplatives, no exceptions. Being in a monastery does not make a monk more prayerful or contemplative than one who lives an active life. We may have more time, but quantity of time is not the same thing as quality. All are invited to a deep intimate relationship with God. All are loved, each human being is God’s favorite because infinite love is like that. Before we can truly see the world in a deep contemplative manner, we

Lightness of being

Lightness of being Birds have wings; they're free; they can fly where they want whenthey want. They have the kind of mobility many people envy. Roger Tory Peterson While at Vina, California I discovered a patch in their retreat house garden that had 8 hummingbird feeders. It was amazing to watch them fly, so many, and two different species! I would stand back and watch and then one morning I moved up to within six inches of one of the feeders. At first the birds acted like

#2 - Pants Only: Put post modernism away you meta dummy.

I have not written a blog before and so far it feels like the writing equivalency of the reality tv show. I think, to me anyway, it is the saturation of the meta element in blogging that makes it feel that way. Often when I talk about "the arts" (I hate saying that. I hate admitting it even more) it seems that the general consensus is that we are still in a sort of never ending post-modern world. Post modernism has become that junk drawer of contemporary culture. A sort of lost and found bo

Heavy burden

Heavy burden At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; separated from law and justice he is the worst.--Aristotle The reason we can be worse than any other animal on the planet is because we ‘can’. We have the heavy burden to be able to choose, and in that choosing we can sink lower than any other life form on this planet. In the end the most rational way of being is to seek to grow in ‘Love’. How we are doing things now does not seem to be working. Perhaps our religious tradit

#1 - Gobstopper: Why it's good to shut up.

As I get older I get a bit quieter and not so chatty. (Writing is an irritating business as there is always this unspoken pressure for sentence variation. Every sentence starting with a pronoun or an article seems more like a broken strand in the rope holding the anvil above your head). So everyday I wake up and my little excuse of a beard is a bit longer and I talk just a bit less. There is a sort of self-gratification that comes from talking too much, or at all, that I find embarrassing

The Library

The Library is situated in a grand park in the center of the city. It is a most conspicuous structure, a giant cathedral, really. It is constructed of stone, and as it towers over all others and can be seen from great distances. On my first visit to the Library I was naturally awed by its immense interior. The large multi-colored windows on every side allowing streamers of radiant light illuminating the vast shelves of books were very impressive. But, what really struck me was its labyrinthine

Complications, Entropy, Perspective, NIce Views, Ornaments and Reliefs

Complications, Entropy, Perspective, Nice Views, Ornaments and Reliefs I was thinking of what kinds of pictures people have hanging on their walls, if any. I think most people have pretty pictures on their walls, and not much great art. Great art is too hard to look at, I think. It's a lot easier on the eye to look at something simple, like a pretty picture. Some artistic masterpieces are too difficult to understand. If there's some Van Gogh or Picasso or something hanging on some wall, it wil

Boating - Chapter 4

After the storm, Zarkor and Cloney's voyage continues without incident. Zarkor spends his days playing with his toys on deck or in his cabin, gives even more meaningless orders to Cloney, takes naps and occasionally keeps an eye on the compass in the Pilot House. Cloney mostly steers the poat, picks up Zarkor’s scattered toys and prepares meals. At nightfall, Cloney keeps watch while Zarkor sleeps comfortably in his cabin. Cloney sometimes anchors the boat and sometimes switches on the Autopilo

Animal rights?

Animal rights? If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelterof compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men. Francis of Assisi I am not at the place St. Francis was, yet as I grow older I find myself not wanting to kill anything. To kill for food is not cruelty. However when we kill animals in mass for food, it is a true horror and there is probably not much that can be done, at least not right now. I think some

All God’s children have problems

All God’s children have problems Man is fond of counting his troubles, but he does not count his joys. If he counted them up as he ought to, he would see that every lot has enough happiness provided for it. Fyodor Dostoevsky Suffering is a problem for mankind, for some an obstacle to the belief in a loving God. It is as if we know something is wrong, that things should be different. Each of us has a burden to carry for most of our lives. The burdens may change, but the heaviness alw

Boating - Chapter 3

As the storm rages around them, the tall waves tossing their little boat helplessly to and fro, Cloney leaves the pilot house and scurry's about looking for the life boat. He soon returns to Zarkor. "Where is the life boat, Captain?!" He shouts in dismay. Returning to partial consciousness, Zarkor’s eyes reset themselves to a glazed focus. "The life boat! Hmm.Yes,” he mumbles. “A good idea. And then a catatonic seizure! Thank you, Cloney.” Zarkor is silent and thinks for a moment. Now semi-awar

Curious kids

When I was about 5 or 6 years old, something curious happened. My family took me to visit a large house. They always took me on trips and holidays, even visiting old castles, manor houses and stuff like that. I remember entering a big room on my own and met several children inside. I wanted to play with them but they didn't seem interested. None of them spoke to me, and they didn't speak at all. They sat there either on chairs or the floor just looking at me. None were playing and there wasn't

The Haunted Pillar of Georgia

The Legend of Moll Dyer has become the most viewed article on Abnormal Realm to date. I would like to thank everyone for checking out the blog along with their comments and feedback. There was no surprise in receiving emails asking for more articles on similar stories. As requested, I will be doing a three part series on places, objects or people believed to be cursed. This week's article looks into the haunted pillar of Georgia. In August, Georgia, on the curb of Fifth Street stands an old dec
