Outwitted by a small, black cat called Elsa.

    By Waspie_Dwarf

I have a small, black cat named Elsa. She is good company, generally very quiet and very well natured (although not always so well behaved). We are, however, in a battle of wits over a chair, and I think I am losing. A few weeks ago a relative of mine moved and had more chairs than was strictly necessary for her smaller flat. The chairs are much newer than the ones I had and so she gave them to me. That is where the battle started. Initially Elsa was happy to claim a chair of her

New ways of seeing and being

New ways of seeing and being This afternoon during one of our sessions, we talked about how creativity, the leaning of a new way to express oneself can be a very enriching experience when older. Writing, painting, dancing and photography are obvious. Yet there are others ways that older people learn how to see the world differently. Learning to listen for instance to younger people, without trying to make them like we were when young. Seeking to understand that each generation has diffe

Embracing life

Embracing life In the first session last night on enjoying life after 50 I talked about embracing life, our journey and yes the aging process that we all go through. To embrace life is to not seek to escape its challenges, for when we do, we often bring upon ourselves the very thing that we seek to run from. Suffering is hated and feared by everyone. Yet it can not be avoided. We can hold close to our hearts ways of dealing with our lives that we know does no good, yet we persist. You

Seeing in a new way

Seeing in a new way When people start to write later in life, like I did, they discover that it is really a new way to see, to look at things. It is as if there was a layer just underneath that they can now see. It is almost like putting on a pair of glasses; suddenly what was opaque becomes clear. I have a good friend, her name is Gail, who just started to write and she writes about everyday experiences for what was once hidden just below the surface, is now there for her to see. Wri

Rat Fish

I had a dream I was fishing with a friend who happens to fish a lot, it was at night at a pretty busy boardwalk area. I started to reel in a fish but what surfaced from the water was a rat. The rat ran towards me and I fell backwards, I ended up stabbing it in its head before it had bitten me. The weird thing is that another rat came from its "back end" and bit me very hard on my hand with a lot of blood, I then killed it. I was afraid I had rabies but my "macho" friend told me not to worry abo

The mind of Christ

(Abba Zeno said, 'If a man wants God to hear his prayer quickly, then before he prays for anything else, even his own soul, when he stands and stretches out his hands towards God, he must pray with all his heart for his enemies. Through this action God will hear everything that he asks). The mind of Christ comes about through a total death to self. A transformation so complete that one actually does love ones enemies....to have the mind of Christ is to see with the eyes of Christ and feel with

Sparrows and the lilies of the field

Sparrows and the lilies of the field The sparrows are fed by God, and the lilies of the filed clothed, more beautiful than the finest robes, rain comes, seeds drop to the ground, birth comes in spring and all is fresh, beautiful and fully alive. Sparrows as taken care of us as they are, are eaten, sicken, and lose many of their young, lilies in all their beauty and grace, age, and yes, are eaten by insects, trampled upon, destroyed by hail, and plucked or cut for their beauty. Don’t

Storms and Tides

I guess I just like storms in my titles. So the medicine worked wonders on me. Except the breathing trouble. So I had to stop, try something else later. The upshot is, the weight was lifted for a bit. The fog cleared a bit. Enough to sight a bit of land and reorient. Stopping hurt. The weight is back, the fog returned. The behaviors I hate about myself spawned from that returned. But now I have an idea where I am headed. It isn't enough. But its something.

The Judgment

The Judgment As I sit here in the waiting room I try to review my life. I am sixty years of age this year, so this is of great importance to me. I try to consider what wrongs I have done in my life and what have I done right. It is not so easy to determine these things. Circumstances we find ourselves in are very complicated to analyze. For instance, trying to do the right thing often will lead to unforeseen consequences which may effect other peoples lives in negative ways. Oftentimes we do t

Boating - Chapter 5

Leaving the beach behind them and entering the forest, Zarkor and Cloney are soon enclosed in its thick foliage. Tall trees loom overhead, streamers of light filter down through their broad leaves. The forest floor is gloomy as the two little adventurers slowly drift on, cautiously peering this way and that for any unexpected danger. After a few hours, Zarkor says, “Let’s stop here, Cloney, I’m tired. How you talked me into carrying all this heavy equipment I’ll never know. I’m supposed to be t

One with all men and women

One with all men and women “During the octave of Corpus Christi, love with all men, adore with all men, hope with all men, and yearn” Pg. 231 He and I (Gabrielle Bossis) When a man or women keeps on the path of prayer, is consistent and when there is failure, to begin again; grace will do its work. Though it may be a slow process, yet that seems how most of us grow in our spiritual lives. It is by our failures that we learn our union with others. Humility allows u

Longing

Longing “I want to be your now, your breathing, and the beating of you heart right to the very last” “He and I” Editions Paulines Having an Ego is a good thing. Though it is not stable, it changes as we go through the day and relate differently to the various people we meet. We can be friends with some, perhaps teachers for others, authority figures, as well as being a husband and wife. With each person we meet we shift, though we may not experience it at the time. We think

What pro-lifers know about abortion (seeing life from both sides)

What pro-lifers know about abortion (Seeing life from both sides) This is known by pro-lifers. That many women who get abortion are often under tremendous stress to undergo this procedure. Their families, their friends, lovers and society in general encourages that they ‘get on with their life’ and just do it. Pro-lifers also know that many women are then left alone to deal with the aftermath of the procedure, where they end the life in their womb. Where these women come to under

Powers

I know I am going to sound like the next person who needs attention but I'm not. Writing this was hard enough. Recently strange things started to happen. Whenever I said something it would happen on the spot. I have some examples. Example 1 Me and my friend were on our way to visit a friend who was in the hospital. We were on our bike and we needed to cross over it was a two way splitting. There was no car to be seen from no side but I was said to my friend and these were my exact words: "You

whats haunting me?

I am a 16 year old girl and am negatively obsessed about being haunted by a scary spirit or 'shadow'. the earliest experience I can remember was when I was about 10 years old in a different house and I was tormented by this figure. I remember going to sleep every night to then wake up late in the night to a 'grim reaper/shadow figure' opposite me in the other end of the room by the wardrobe. i would then in fear bury my head in the quilt and look up to find the figure slowly moving towards me. s

If you live my word

If you live His word I believe that there is something to the apparitions at Medjugorje, and the Blessed Mother is being used by God to try to reach us and bring us all into a deep loving relationship with Jesus. Many non-Catholics go there, as well as others from other religions. Muslims and Hindus and those who are more agnostic, yet each find that they come closer to God, many coming to Jesus. I think this message is truly beautiful, one of the best I believe that have come out of

Wrath

Wrath Wrath is a scary word, and when used in relation to God it can be terrifying. In the Old Testament it is used quite a bit, along with severe punishments towards the people of Israel. I have to be honest and say that apart from the psalms, I do not spend much time in the Old Testament; so much that I don’t understand, it being written from a cultural perspective that I have a hard time understanding. God language can only come through the person or culture where they are in thei

Deeply rooted

Deeply rooted I was at Vina for three days when Bernard gave me a tour of the grounds around the Monastery. As we drove around he pointed out the trees, some being very old. He then pointed to a small group of trees, large ones or so it seemed to me. Then he told me that they were 400 year old Redwood trees. I had a sudden change of perspective and instead of seeing them as rather large trees and ancient; I saw them as being young and small, far from the height that they would reach if

Misuse of Holy Books

Misuse of Holy Books I have had over the years, trouble with Christian hard liner's, in the way that they not only use scriptures, but how they actually treat others in using the Bible in attacking others. I have always found this interesting, since attacking only raises up defenses, and in the end, nothing is accomplished. I suppose the main problem with this approach is that certain scriptures are gathered together, lined up, loaded, and then used as an arsenal to blast others. Christ

The Curse of Bodie

Exactly what is a curse? How does it work? What makes it supernatural? These, like many other questions, I had asked when I first came across the concept of a curse. Over the years, I had learned it could also be a hex or jinx where supernatural forces are invoked to inflict harm, misfortune or punishment on a person or people by spells, rituals, pact, spirit or divine being. Curses could even be placed on objects or places, but could they follow you home? The next installment in the series of c

The numbing of mindfulness

The numbing of mindfulness When I was a young monk, here for only a short time, I noticed on my way to Vespers (evening prayer at 5:20) a plant set out on one of the benches that are scattered around our cloister garden. I was looking at it; it was not a very impressive looking specimen, at least in my estimation. Fr. Paul walked by who was in charge of our gardens. He was also a bonsai master and was one of the reasons that bonsai become so popular in the Southeast. So I asked Paul why

Obstacles to Contemplative prayer

Obstacles to Contemplative prayer We are all called to be contemplatives, no exceptions. Being in a monastery does not make a monk more prayerful or contemplative than one who lives an active life. We may have more time, but quantity of time is not the same thing as quality. All are invited to a deep intimate relationship with God. All are loved, each human being is God’s favorite because infinite love is like that. Before we can truly see the world in a deep contemplative manner, we
