Treat others as you wish to be treated

(Through the Thou a person becomes I. ---Martin Buber)

It is easy for me to say that “I live by the Golden Rule”. It roles off my tongue without effort and sounds wonderful. However, to keep that in focus is in reality very difficult. In order to live this reality, it takes not only self-awareness on a deep level, but also mindfulness of the ‘other’ I am encountering. I often make others into ‘its’, into functions, and treating them accordingly. I am often not awake but sleep walking through the day.

Each human heart is sacred, holy, endowed with great dignity because they are made in the image of God. Race, religion, level of intelligence or whether they are pleasant or not, cannot undercut that reality. To treat another human being with contempt, to destroy them through gossip, to hate because of their race or religion is an act of sacrilege. For it is Chris Jesus who dwells in each heart and identifies with each of us…no human being is an ‘it’ …to God, but we are all a ‘Thou’.

I sin is when I forget that.

I remember reading the Martin Buber book, "I and Thou" or whatever the title was, I suppose I was in my 20s. Now that you mention the quote, I want to read it again.

Back in the old days there was a pop psychology book, "I'm Ok, Your're Ok." In relationships it's either, "I'm ok, you're ok, I'm ok, you're not ok, I'm not ok, you're ok, or I'm not ok, you're not ok." Sort of relates to the Buber book, I think, as I remember.
