Walking
There’s an old saying attributed to the Navy Seals:
“When you think you’ve reached your limit, you’re really only at 40%.”
Well, today I proved it to be true. I set a new personal record for walking: 18 miles!
I drove to the nearby state park, intending to walk 11 miles to reach my weekly goal of 25-miles-per-week, but a Forrest Gump-like feeling came over me and I just kept walking.
My previous record was 15 miles on the Withlacoochee State Trail near Floral City, Florida on July 4th, 2018. But today, powered by a ham sandwich, a few potato chips, and a glass of carrot juice, I set my sights on a new record: 16 miles. When I got to the 16-mile mark, and feeling invigorated for having broken my previous record, I thought to myself, “I can do this. I can do 17”. Then I got to 17, and I set my face like flint, and I said, “I’m going for the Gold.”
I believe 18 miles is the most walking I’ve ever done in one day. It’s possible that I did better back in my Boy Scout days, but that was half a century ago and now my memory is kind of fuzzy.
When I started this walking routine several years ago, I was walking a mere 10 miles per week. Oh, how I laugh when I think about those tenderfoot days! Now I can walk barefoot on a beach and proudly display my sandpaper soles and rhinoceros-horn toenails for all the world to see. The only drawback is having to constantly keep my eyes open for poachers.
