skakos Posted January 25, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 25, 2012 Is the heliocentric system "proved"? Was the geocentric system "proved"? Do you know at what conclusion was Hubble initially led to based on his observations of other galaxies? Do you know how he changed that conclusion so as to say that "we are not at the center of the universe" ? And in any case, can any scientific model be more "true" than another and if yes, based on what criteria? Does the notion of "truth" has anything to do with models which are just used to describe a physical system?
Imaginarynumber1 Posted January 25, 2012 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2012 The Heliocentric model is correct in that we do indeed orbit about a centralized star, though not at the center of the universe. Clearly we do not live in a geocentric solar system or universe. I would wager to say that a scientific model would be more "true" than another if the observations fit the predictions. Lilly Posted January 25, 2012 #3 Share Posted January 25, 2012 (edited) According to Dr. Einstein each observer (wherever he may be) is the center of the Universe. It's all 'relative' you know! Just to add, The Bad Astronomer (Dr. Plait) explains this rather nicely Edited January 25, 2012 by Lilly addition
