questionmark Posted September 6, 2013 #1 Share Posted September 6, 2013 Ice in Antarctica and Greenland is disappearing faster and may drive sea levels higher than predicted this century, according to leaked United Nations documents. Greenland’s ice added six times more to sea levels in the decade through 2011 than in the previous 10 years, according to a draft of the UN’s most comprehensive study on climate change. Antarctica had a fivefold increase, and the UN is raising its forecast for how much the two ice sheets will add to Earth’s oceans by 2100. The changes in the planet’s coldest areas are a “very good indicator” of a warming planet, according to Walt Meier, a research scientist with the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. questionmark Posted September 16, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted September 16, 2013 Update, the ice sheet is spreading http://www.telegraph...scientists.html and http://www.activistp...ice-growth.html . Well if it gets cold water from the Greenland melt and Antarctic melt: Why are you surprised? And it is precisely that Antarctic melt that seemingly kept temperatures at bay over the last few years. The problem is: It can't melt forever.
Aggie Posted September 16, 2013 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2013 The Nasa satellite picture above shows the ice in Greenland is increasing....not melting? So what is it then?
questionmark Posted September 16, 2013 Author #5 Share Posted September 16, 2013 The Nasa satellite picture above shows the ice in Greenland is increasing....not melting? So what is it then? The Nasa picture above shows a thin layer of ice and not Greenland freezing as the ice layer (see center of the picture, to the right) over Greenland shows less ice over the Islands in front of Disco Bay. Besides, it is not that there might be an ice layer (which is there undoubtedly) but the thickness of all the ice. Unless that does not get back to the 2007 level (after the great melt) there is nothing to celebrate about. Only Eye candy that some make a big hoopla over.
Von Bismarck Posted September 16, 2013 #6 Share Posted September 16, 2013 The Nasa satellite picture above shows the ice in Greenland is increasing....not melting? So what is it then? The pic seeder have shown is what's known as Cherry picking. Yes the Sea ice has increased from 2012 to 2013. But please remember that the 2012 pic/Results were record breaking low. Lets put it this way. In 2003 you had $100.000 to gamble with and in 2013 you have lost it all. In 2006 you lost $80.000, but in 2007 you won $40.000. Does this mean you have increased your money since you started? No you still have -$100.000 after 10 years. What Questionmarks article is saying(without reading it) is probably that ice has been melting faster the last 10 years compared to 1990-2000
