Yeah Kurt's version of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" was awesome; but I like their last song "You Know You're Right" best; it has an eirre feeling to it.

I agree with what you say about "Smells Like Teen Spirit" people are always saying that about it but it coul dbe that Kurt didn't like it; but it was the song that got them into the mainstream, know what I mean?

Yeah. Have you got that book , "Journals"? I like to see how a song evolved, & "Teen Spirit" , had so many alternate versions, all excellent. As did loads of Kurdts songs.

Mr Cobain should of counted his blessings took the money & run ! He could have done whatever he wanted just off the royalties from,"Nevermind". All the macaronni cheese he could eat :D . But , drugs **** with minds. & he thought to much of peer pressure, feeling like a sell-out instead of , just saying , Yes, i dont have to live sh** anymore. Sorry for goin on, i"m a bit drunk ! :D

Yeah, I think that he had all the alternate versions because his feelings changed while writing them and so did the meanings.

I get what you mean about him thinking he was selling out but as both Krist and Dvae have said they weren't prepared for the pressures of stardom.

My mate Matt made this to practice stand-up slap bass, until he can afford a proper double bass.Believe it or not it works!

Its tuneable & sounds authentic through an amp. He spent about £20 on it & is now slappin like a good un. :D

I've been playing Bass for quite a few years now, but don't really get a chance to practice a whole heap. My favourite bass player is Peter Kohlhoff and I don't think anyone here will have heard that name before. I like quite a few popular bass players though, so I'm not entirely underground. I believe the hardest song I can play would be Anaesthesia (Pulling Teeth) from Metallica. Tough song, and I don't think I've ever actually mastered it, but i can do a fair imitation of it :D

Unfortunately, I only have a crappy Samick bass at the moment. Being a student isn't so great for finding funds to buy these things, and I've pretty much had this bass since I started. There was a very nice Washburne bass that my friend bought that I wanted, but I never got around to saving the money for something like that.

edit: as for style, I think I prefer a more mellow Jazz/Blues feel, with the whole laid back Walking Bass feel.

I heart bass. Too bad I'm absolutely terrible at playing. I started with a yamaha 5 string which has a very wide neck and with small hands it wasn't exactly comfortable at first. I later obtained a 78 precision bass which has been a lot better to practice on.

I need want a rickenbacker bass.

Yeah, point taken on the "weren"t prepared for the pressures of stardom" bit. I guess that from the outside looking in, its a great lifestyle, but if you"re actually living that life it would get too much.

Edit: Its good to see Dave Grohl doing so well. VERY talented guy.

To "distortedpandy", Yeah, rockabilly/psychobilly is loadsa FUN. I dont understand why its remained an "underground" music form,& never really caught the mainstream ?

Hi distortedpandy. Theres a company called "Daisy Rock" who specialise in making guitars aimed at females & males with small hands. Their guitars are not too expensive & have received very good reviews in guitar magazines. If they do basses they might be worth a look. :D

anyone who likes jazz is A-Ok in my books :tu:

I find jazz a bit inaccesible, but i admire the skill of the musicians.

I like the jazz playing that Brian Setzer of "Stray Cats" puts into rockabilly stuff, you can never guess whats coming next.

Sorry to post so many times in a row, but i like this topic.

Question:

The last double-bass player in my band had terrible feedback problems (the bass, not him, lol) when playing at volume. Anyone got any hints/tips to overcome this ?

Also, can anyone recommend a decent bass amp, suitable for gigging, easy to set up, that doesnt cost the Earth ? (its for putting a double-bass thru).

Hi Moderators, how ya doin ?

I think my original title for this thread was misleading.

Could this thread be merged with the "do you play bass" one, as the same people answering this thread, are also on the "bass" one , talking about a similar subject ?

Thanks to all who posted. :tu:

All Apollogies to "tnr". I asked the moderators if they could merge our two threads together, as they were along similar lines.

Well, the threads have been merged, but it states "rocket88" as the person who started this thread. Thats not the case. This thread was started by "tnr", with the title "do you play bass". It"s an excellent thread, & i"m sorry if i ****ed things up. "tnr", i appologise.

Hello, i"m Deck (Derek) (Rocket88),

I feel i"ve been "flamed" a bit , because of the "88" bit of my bands name.

It turns out that some people think that "88" stands for "heil hitler" , 8th letter of the alphabet is H! This is certainly not the case.

I love good time, fun music, that people get up to, n boogie to. My forum name is "Rocket88".

I have a myspace thing (www.myspace.com/deckrocket88), & also a website for the band (www.rocket-88.co.uk).

Feel free to have a look, & take the p*** !!!

My band was named after the Ike Turner penned song "Rocket88". Its a song extolling the virtues of a 50s car. The Oldsbobile "Rocket 88". Its also somehow classed as the 1st Rock n Roll song, but to me, its just beautiful Rhythm n Blues.

If you check out the website, then im the one with shoulder length hair (its short now). I might even shave it all off & have a swastika tattooed on my forehead (NOT).

Loadsa LOVE Deck. *** :P

I rule the bass... and I don't understand the question ....
