ships-cat Posted September 17, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 17, 2007 The Saudi's (gawd bless 'em) have enriched the UK government to the tune of around £6 Billion (around $12 billion) by purchasing 72 Typhoon Eurofighter jets, plus a package of spares etc. These are high-tech multi-role fighter/bombers. The deal has been dogged with rumours of corruption, culminating in the UK government intefering with an ongoing Police bribery investigation and ordering the enquiry to be dropped on 'national security' grounds. Full story from the British Imperial Overseas Wireless Television Service , so make sure you're wearing a dinner-jacket before clicking on the link. Wonder how Boeing and Lockheed etc feel about this ? Meow Purr.

Who are we going to use them against ? We've already got 144, why bother with another 70 ? The Navy aren't interested in them (but then the Navy is odd that way... I think they put something in their drinking water...). 2-3 years ago, I might have agreed with them. These days... I'm not so sure.. To mis-quote the Lyrics of that song by The Automatic... "Whats that coming over the hill ? Is it a Backfire ? Is it a Backfire ? " Putin DOES appear to be getting fiesty with his long-range and Naval strategic bomber force of late. Meow Purr. stevewinn Posted September 17, 2007 #7 Share Posted September 17, 2007 Ships Cat, I think it has something to do with the Navy and the two new carriers we're building. (which should be ready in 2014 and 2016,) the fighters the navy wants is the American F35.B which are cosing us a fortune and the yanks dont want to sell us the onboard computer system, http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/poli...icle2141406.ece I think the MoD are trying to cut money from the eurofighter to spend on the new aircraft for the carriers, Eurofighter i heard the UK government want to sling a 30 mm GAU-8.A seven barrel Gatling under the nose of some of the Typhoons, like the American A10, which is having great success in Afghanistan. Steve, Yeah - I heard that as well (about the JSF). Apparantly it costs around £140 million EACH ? As for the gatling gun... I'm not sure that the Typhoon can fly slowly enough to make that work ??? The A10... now THAT was an aeroplane. Ugly. Slow. Fudged together. Only inended as a stop-gap untill they could design something 'proper' to do the job. ..except they never did, 'cos that ugly Warthog just kept on kicking ass. Nobody loves the A10. Except the pilots. Oh... and the ground troops it was designed to protect. Lots of people hate the A10. The pentagon (not sexy enough). The arms industry (too cheap). ..enemy tank drivers. Enemy ground troops. Enemy command/control HQ's. Enemies in general. Viva the Warthog. Coming to a battlefield near you, whenever you're pinned down and in dire need. Sorry... got carried away there... errr.. what where we talking about ? Meow BRRRRRRRRRRRR.
