MID Posted September 29, 2007 #4 Share Posted September 29, 2007 I just got the creeps when I saw the shuttle hanging like that. If it falls, then there goes a millions of dollars. Worry not. The vehicle was designed to hang like that (it's really the only way to get it mated and on it's mobile launch platform). Looks wierd, but it's been done well over 100 times. By the way, we speak of the Shuttle in terms of billions of dollars, not millions (we won't drop it...)!

Picturesque Orion Posted September 29, 2007 #7 Share Posted September 29, 2007 Hmm I could say that I imagined the assembly building a bit smaller. :/

MID Posted September 29, 2007 #9 Share Posted September 29, 2007 Hmm I could say that I imagined the assembly building a bit smaller. :/ I think it's still the largest structure on Earth (volume wise). It's immense, and breathtaking when you're up close and personal. 25 May, 1966... And sometime in the future, showing some fellow poised at the base of that rocket you see in the first photo coming out of that cavernous immensity. Yep, she's a big mamoo! Walking into the high bay area takes your breath away!

MID Posted September 30, 2007 #11 Share Posted September 30, 2007 me thinks this pup beats it MID. huge I think you're right, belial. I hadn't realized they made the thing as big as they have. Looks like it covers about 12 VAB footprints! It's a big flat pancake, where the VAB is a big vertical structure, which is what makes it seem so absoluetly dizzying (well, it is!)! Waspie_Dwarf Posted October 10, 2007 #13 Share Posted October 10, 2007 (edited) I think it's still the largest structure on Earth (volume wise). I was always of the belief that the VAB was the second largest building by volume, with Boeing's Everett plant (where they assemble the 747's) being the largest, but doing a bit of research to confirm this it seems that it is only the third largest, with a hanger for a never constructed airship in Brandenburg, Germany being the second largest. You live and learn. Source: Wikipedia Edited to add: Opps! I have just noticed belial has already mentioned the Everett Plant. Still if I had read that first I would never have learned of the airship hanger. Edited October 10, 2007 by Waspie_Dwarf
