toble Posted October 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 5, 2007 Has anyone heard about the BBC Storyville 'Why Democracy?' season? I've bee looking on the BBC website at the list of documentaries that are going to be broadcast over the next week or so and it looks great. It's such a relevant issue at the minute, I hope the docs spark a widespread debate about the pros and cons of democracy etc. I especially like the sound of Taxi to the Dark Side, Looking for the Revolution and the Ministry of Truth. I looked the Ministry of Truth up and it sounds great - apparently they ask various politicians (Jack Straw, Harriet Harman, the Lord Chancellor, David Davis etc) 'should elected representatives be more honest and accountable?'. I found their website, worth a look: www.ministry-of-truth.net

Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those others that have been tried from time to time.

Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those others that have been tried from time to time. But so many people assume/accept that democracy is the perfect political system, they have this idea that we are moving towards some kind of pinnacle of civility (and that our democratic systems are not only a stepping stone in the evolution of societies, but practically reaching that pinnacle), when in fact it all seems to work in cycles. Hmmm. Anyway, what did you think of the Ministry of Truth site? Interesting eh?! I particularly like the fact that they have gotten interviews with so many leading political figures and that they have presented them (well, from what I can gather!) with an act called The Misrepresentation of the People Act - what a good idea! I'm not sure that I agree with section four of the act though - I think it undermines the underlying premise of what they are trying to do
stevewinn Posted October 5, 2007 #4 Share Posted October 5, 2007 (edited) The web site looks good and is interesting but i'd rather watch it on BBC2 , the Misrepresentation of the People Act, im not sure about, If a Memeber of Parliament lies, their punishment should be voted out by the power of the people, we, the population of Great Britain are a very accepting bunch we know are politicians lie yet we dont kick up a fuss, we accept it, the British people will except most things if its done over time bit by bit a good example is the 2000 petrol protest because petrol prices where going to be £0.81 litre, yet here we are 2007 and the price of petrol is £0.97-£1.00 a litre and looks to be staying that way. why arent people protesting again, only answer is we've been conditioned over time to just accept it, the politicians wont stop lying until the British Public start to vent their anger and actually do something about it, namely vote them out, if we end up with acts, it'll just waste time and money, like ive said, if a primeminister says in an election he's going to do this and that and after 5 years he hasnt then, simple yet effective the people on mass no matter what, vote that governmnet out, that way future governments will think hey-up, if we dont keep our promises where out the door, Link to the petrol protest, such a distant memory http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_fuel_protest Edited October 5, 2007 by stevewinn
