100 Steps Cemetery

This afternoon me and my brother went to 100 Steps Cemetery. Here is the story from a website.

"100 Step Cemetery - At midnight, if you walk up the stairs on the grassy side of the cemetery, there are graves dating back to the 1860s all around. On one's way up you count the steps. When you reach the top, you must turn toward the open field and the ghost of the cemetery's first undertaker will appear. Without saying anything he will reveal the climbers own death to them in a vision. The hiker MUST proceed down the steps, counting them again. If they do not get the same number as they counted before then they will die the way they saw but if they do the vision was wrong. If anyone dares to try to reach the top or level ground by not using the steps, they will be pushed to the ground by a phantom hand which will leave a red imprint on the persons back for several days so those who see it can see the mark of the Devil. Another version goes like this, Carpenter's Cemetery lies just west of 340 and US 40 on CR 675. Locally it is better known as 100 steps. Legend has it that, on the darkest nights when you can't see your hand in front of you, you can walk up the broken steps of this cemetery and count 100 steps. As you walk down, you can count only 99. Its a hard trick to do when there are only 60 or so steps there any other time. The night must be total and you must not be able to see where you step. Legend tells of those trying to walk beside the steps on the ground and of people being knocked down hard to the ground with handprints appearing on their chest. The legend continues that if you are able to safely navigate the steps in the pitch of darkness and make the magical count, then that night before the rise of the sun, the spirit of the original caretaker will make known to you the manner of your death."

Location: Just off 675 W north of Brazil, IN if driving on Highway 40. If your heading west its before the Marathon station. Tun left on 675 W. and drive 1/4 a mile or so and its around a corner on your left side. Its located on a hill, but the steps start at the road.

We were in shock to see the condition of the graveyard. We have been there many times before and headstones were knocked down but that was the extent of it. But now some one has spray painted on headstones and trees. Its a tragedy really. People dont respect anything anymore. Its a historical site and now is destroyed. But anyways. If your looking to go their and count the steps you will have no such luck. They are old and broken and unable to count. It is or was a nice peaceful place but still worth checking out. Here are my pics so enjoy.

That is so horrible! I wish they would be haunted by the restless spirits until they went back and cleaned their graffiti up. Otherwise, great story and pictures (the ones without graffiti). Thanks for sharing!

I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw it. Their was paint everywhere. And it was recent because a pinnacle tombstone had the year 2007 painted on it on one side and "Yeah" painted on the other. Its just senseless. Their was no reason for it.

I suppose the answer is no :hmm: ... and it sure was rude to make those sort of comments about someones picture post that I did ...the difference is I did it to make a point...and why are you getting a digital camera? (get at least 5.0 mega pixel)... seems like your a tad on the close minded side ...that won't help  ....b

What gets me is what do they get out of doing such damage? Would they like it if it happened to their families? last resting place?

i find it pathetic and pointless, those kids/teens should be charged and made to clean it up, so has anyone actually expirienced the story or is it just legend? if it is true why would ghosts make sure you went to the top? past expiriences?

The one with the moon and theline under it? It was probably a con trail from a jet making a turn. (Yes, planes fly at night too! Ha-ha!) Not common to see the con trails and even more uncommon to be inthe right place at the right time to see them line up like that but, still a very cool picture.

As for the graffetti, that is just sad. Probably done by kids who get their asses kicked at school for being wannabe satanists or some dog leavins stuff like that. WHo else would beat up on the dead eccept someone who can beat up on no one else. With any luck, someone will desecrate their graves to the point of them not being able to even be found.
