I reckon they are peacock feathers similar to these. I have to disagree. The hubby is taller, and she would have to lean up more if she were to get her arm all the way across his back, and there are no peacock feathers around that I can see, anyway. To me, it appears to be a dog, that did not belong in the photo. Whether it be a spirit guide, or a hound from Hell, he owns it and appears the dogs appearance was a major pivoting point in his life.
