Cadbury's chocolate to get more expensive

By Angela Monaghan

Last Updated: 9:02am GMT 11/12/2007

As economic conditions look set to worsen in 2008, one of life's simple pleasures, the Cadbury chocolate bar, will be more expensive too.

Cadbury Schweppes said that it would be charging more in the new year for its products, which include Dairy Milk and Flake, because of a 6pc hike in the price of dairy, oil and cocoa.

Finance director Ken Hanna said that commodity prices has risen "more sharply" in the second half, and would filter through to customers in early 2008.

He would not be drawn on how much more expensive a chocolate bar would be, but said: "We are in negotiations with retailers. The increases will be slightly higher than inflation but beyond that I can't say."

Mr Hanna was speaking alongside chief executive Todd Stitzer as they revealed in a trading update that confectionary revenue and margins for the year to the end of December would be ahead of expectations.

Cadbury Schweppes is now expecting revenue to grow above the 4pc-6pc it previously forecast, as well as a "modest increase" margins, which the company had earlier warned would not improve.

Mr Stitzer said that growth had been boosted by the re-launch of the Wispa brand, successful marketing investment in Cadbury Dairy Milk, and a "positive start" to the Christmas trading season.

He said that plans to demerge its US drinks business were on track to be completed in the second quarter of 2008, when it would be renamed Dr Pepper Snapple Group and listed separately.

Everything is going up in price, we're all getting conned, its us the stupid people who are to blame, these companies need to understand its the buyers, not sellers, that control the market place, if we were united as one in our actions and people refused to pay the high prices, within days the price would drop, its that simple,

Yikes $9 for a gallon of gas.... and I complain at $3 per gallon!!!

I know corn has gone up in price, which is fed to the cows, hay has also gone up double since last year. So I guess you see the rise in the end product. Can't really blame cadbury's.

petrol protest on saturday in the UK, lets see what the outcome is, panic buying will be one, followed by support from the motoring public until their petrol tanks run low and then they'll moan, moaning will bring the protest to an end, government is laughing its head off, outcome we're still paying the same price and moaning, we need to think, its short term pain for long term gain,

A sure sign of the Apocalypse. I predict that in the year 2012, the price of chocolate will be $200 an ounce.

Ok get a bunch of people to kill themselves and I will cheer you on, less demand = cheaper gas for me.

As for this chocolate thing good it should be more expensive and so should all other sh*tty junk foods. Maybe peoples @sses wouldn't be so fat because they wouldn't eat it so much.

a hike I can understand to keep up with costs ,,, but on top of the hike they are making the eggs smaller !!! and paying less in labor.

We should all start eating fruit and we should all buy bicycles.

THEN! Sweets and chocolate will fall in price, and oil will be overflowing that they'll be practically giving it away.

"Buy one gallon for £2, get one free".

This Thread should be in the Conspiracy section!

Soon it will be food ration books which will follow beer rations. The age limit for going into pubs will probably rise to 65 and all roller-skating rinks will probably be outlawed.

In fact ANYTHING that the general public enjoys will be banned.

How the Governments must hate the lowlifes :(

Another reason to go on that diet I've been talking about since last year...:)

My dad used to work in the Cadbury factory down here in Australia and he used to get these massive 5kg boxes of chocolate for about $20AUD.

Those were the days...

Agreed. Not sure about your end, but down here, a 250g block is around $4.89AUD. A supermarket brand white bread is $1.92AUD.

Go figure.

The thing that makes me laugh is when they bring out a smaller version of a chocolate bar, & then call it 'fun sized' I mean whats fun about a smaller choc bar.

I generally agree with your sentiments AG. However i bemoan the fact that junk food is far more affordable than healthy produce giving the majority of people no realistic option when it comes to do their grocery shopping.

good idea chok...unfortunately in our global economy the price of all commodities, is tied to the cost of oil....expect everything to go up ..until we get off this oil addiction...

Well obesity and unhealthy life styles aren't limited to the poor, many people who can afford to eat right don't and instead would rather live a life of personal convenience as opposed to live healthy.
