Muslim Minority Marches in Protest

Muslim Minority Marches Against German Crime Show

The popular German TV series "Tatort" has provoked an uproar within a segment of its Turkish community. Alevi Muslims, who practice a tolerant offshoot of Shiism, say the show has revived a centuries-old incest libel and may inflame immigrant tensions in Germany.

Up to 20,000 Alevi Muslims in Germany gathered in front of the Cologne cathedral on Sunday to protest a broadcast of a popular TV series called "Tatort" (Crime Scene). Alevi leaders said the show played on a centuries-old prejudice against Alevis by showing a character involved in incest.

The protest "was absolutely peaceful," said a police spokesman according to Agence France-Presse. An Alevi leader in Germany, Mehmet Ali Toprak, told the Tageszeitung newspaper: "The Alevis respect freedom of press and freedom of opinion and are opposed to any ban on cultural expression. But these values must not be used to harm the dignity of a minority."

Alevis are an offshoot of Shi'ites and make up at least a tenth of the estimated 3 million Muslims in Germany. They're a minority in Turkey, where leaders say the Sunni majority discriminates against them for their liberal practices which include allowing women to mix with men in prayer. Their relative tolerance gave rise to a stereotype in the Ottoman Empire that Alevis were prone to incest.

The "Tatort" episode, broadcast by the state-funded ARD channel on December 23, portrays murder and incest within a modern Alevi family in Germany. Hundreds of Alevis demonstrated against the show last week in Berlin, Hanover and Hamburg, but Sunday's protest was unprecedented. The Turkish Daily News reported that around 200 buses had been rented to bring thousands of Alevis from around Europe to Cologne.

Ugh, anything and anything for an uproar.

It's a TV show. Really, if they're thinking it to be a true repersentation of cultures, then Mexicans would all dance around their Sombrero's and all Londeners would break out into song which are strangely always synchronised.

They need to grow up. Or just not watch TV.

'Peaceful' marches? I fear what that means o_o

Good for them.

It even states they are against banning freedom of speech, but the television program was taking it to far.

Atleast moderates are getting their voices heard...

i agree with that Chokmah, the muslims love a good march/protest, i think it has something to do with them being opressed in the middle east for all them years, and finially when they find themselves in a true democracy they cant believe their luck and are making up for lost time,.

People showing their ignorance at issues they know nothing about again. ARD obviously used an offensive stereotype, bordering on racism. They're right for protesting it.

And yet, murders and incest in any other family that is not muslim is... Okay? Seeing as no one else really protests. I guess they just understand that TV doesn't repersent an entire culture... Unlike some people's.

Ugh, forget about it. If you can't see how that is not just a random family, then explaining is useless.

It's a crime show though. They all use the worse of culture for a storyline. CSI series here uses a lot of them without complaint.

The director of the episode, Angelina Maccarone, said she had wanted to portray the difficulties of discussing incest and child abuse within immigrant communities in Germany, but admitted she had been unaware of the accusations made against Alevis. "Despite extensive research, I did not know that there was an age-old prejudice against Alevis," she told Tageszeitung.

I did a quick search on them and unless I added a '+ incest' in my search keywords, I didn't find any links right away that discussed it.

What is this show, is it just a fictional crime show or is it one of those that does real-life crimes?

It is a fictional crime serie. Tatort used to be a great crime serie but in the last few years hardly anyone is watching. This is why the go to the extreme. They did it last year I believe with real porn scenes.....

It is all about money. They new what is going to happen.

Protests in the muslim homeworld are often met with government crackdowns and many killed. Now, the troublemakers are in western nations where we don't shoot hellraisers. Maybe there is a little to be learned from some of those third world nations after all???

That seems somewhat harsh M'lud. A peacefull protest in a public square ? What's to get upset about ? From the little I read, they didn't even march on the TV station (which might have been deemed threatening), they just gathered, made some speeches.... they just excercised their democratic rights - apparantly without threatening anyone. Good on 'em.

The UK's "behead all those who insult Islam" brigade could do well to take a leaf out of their book.

I think these moderate muslims need support, but not on this issue, Islam and muslims can't be exempt from criticism (be it fiction or non-fiction) when the rest of us are fair game.

Well... we had the christians protesting outside theatres when they did the Jerry Springer opera... and the Sihks protested at the staging of Behzti at the Birmingham Repertoire Theatre (ultimately causing it's cancellation, which was annoying). The Hindu's have protested outside the RSPCA over the killing of a cow last week, and the Bhuddists... well... they havn't actually PROTESTED recently, but they probably grumbled over SOMETHING in the last year.

So, Alevi Muslims are associated with a rumour about incest?

Of course, it's probably not true but then again, there's the old saying, 'no smoke without fire' :)

I think Alevi muslims are the only ones who should be allowed to protest.

Seems all other muslims break things and threaten when they have "peaceful protests". As if evident of all the protests they had in the UK thus far.

Couldn't agree more. What gets me is, if things are so bad for these people in this country, if they're so badly treated that they have to go out and cause absolute chaos and destroy private property and burn our national flag, why don't they just go home? It's not a hard solution to think up.
