Texas-size UFO is the talk of the town

STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- In this farming community where nightfall usually brings clear, starry skies, residents are abuzz over reported sightings of what many believe is a UFO.

Several dozen people -- including a pilot, county constable and business owners -- insist they have seen a large silent object with bright lights flying low and fast. Some reported seeing fighter jets chasing it.

"People wonder what in the world it is because this is the Bible Belt, and everyone is afraid it's the end of times," said Steve Allen, a freight company owner and pilot who said the object he saw last week was a mile long and half a mile wide. "It was positively, absolutely nothing from these parts."

While federal officials insist there's a logical explanation, locals swear that it was larger, quieter, faster and lower to the ground than an airplane. They also said the object's lights changed configuration, unlike those of a plane. People in several towns who reported seeing it over several weeks have offered similar descriptions.

Machinist Ricky Sorrells said friends made fun of him when he told them he saw a flat, metallic object hovering about 300 feet over a pasture behind his Dublin home. But he decided to come forward after reading similar accounts.

"It feels good to hear that other people saw something, because that means I'm not crazy," Sorrells said.

Sorrells said he has seen the object several times. He said he watched it through his rifle's telescopic lens and described it as very large and without seams, nuts or bolts.

Maj. Karl Lewis, a spokesman for the 301st Fighter Wing at the Joint Reserve Base Naval Air Station in Fort Worth, said no F-16s or other aircraft from his base were in the area the night of Jan. 8, when most people reported the sighting.

Lewis said the object may have been an illusion caused by two commercial airplanes. Lights from the aircraft would seem unusually bright and may appear orange from the setting sun.

"I'm 90 percent sure this was an airliner," Lewis said. "With the sun's angle, it can play tricks on you."

Officials at the region's two Air Force bases -- Dyess in Abilene and Sheppard in Wichita Falls -- said none of their aircraft were in the area last week. The Air Force no longer investigates UFOs.

It'll be the main feature on Larry King, tonight.

Objective reporting at it's finest. :)

So how did they determine how big the "thing" was if they didn't know how far away it was? (and vis a vis)

well UD, if you watch the video, you would hear "just like constable leroy gaitan saw. 20miles to the south". so did he see the same thing 20miles from where he was? or was he 20miles away from where the other man was? i dunno

however, ill probably give some credit to the pilot too, for being a good judge of size and distance.

If the object was at a low altitude, coupled along with the fact that witnesses know the area and its landmarks and landscape features intimately, it becomes a safe bet that any estimations of an aerial object's size might be truer to the mark than not.

id probably agree with that.

and like i mentioned, id give some props to the pilot and his description in size, of the object.

Well, Im pilot/flight instructor and have logged several thousands of hours in the air. Im telling you, there is nothing harder then telling how big, far away or fast something is going, in the air, or over water for that matter.

no?

oh, well ive been up in a plane, once.

so i really dont know how hard it is. i was just assuming, from seeing all sorts of other aircraft, youd be able to judge the size of certain ones. like if you know theres some type of boeing out there, you could tell about how far it might be. just because you know the size of it. imo.

so then im not sure how accurate his description may be

Yeah, it is quite hard to judge anything really while you're in the air. I have only flown in the very basic of aircraft, the only RADAR I have is the info the ground crew can give me! Its harder at night, you have to make your judgments very quickly, while those on the ground can merrily take their time :)

I've nowhere near 1000 hours flight time, so it looks like it doesn't get any easier with practise!

Yo everyone - make sure you catch the Larry King special on the alien spacecraft over Texas tonight.

Yes. I did call it an alien spacecraft...why not?

First, let me say I'm anxiously awaiting the day when life of any level of sentience is confirmed positively and undeniably, given concrete evidence that's scientifically verifiable. I also am a resident of North Texas and am quite familiar with the Stephenville area and its residents. These people are honest, hard-working, no-nonsense people. And I don't refute what they SAW. I wish I could also have seen whatever it was.

But all of this "seeing" aerial phenomenon from a distance brings to mind this little (mind-numbing and irritatingly FACTUAL) illusion played upon the fallable human brain by the human eye:

When viewed upon its rise in the eastern sky, our MOON appears MUCH larger in size than when it does when it is directly above us, with no other visual cues for our eyes to judge "size". If the MOON appears LARGER when on the HORIZON (and quite 'near' other objects on the horizon), logic would dictate that the MOON IS CLOSER than when it is directly above us in the night sky. Well, our logical brains in this case are WRONG, as illogical as that sounds. Physics, as absolutely unbelievable as it sounds, rules the logic in this case.

Ergo, the only logical explanation at this point is "an object was seen in the sky moving in an unexplained manner". Size, vector, and altitude are entirely moot, and quite UNscientific to even postulate at this time or in this event.

To prove the MOON ILLUSION, do as I'm sure most of you have heard: Hold a pencil eraser at arm's length when the moon is "large" upon rising on over the horizon, then again when it is high in the sky and appearing quite significantly "smaller". The pencil eraser doesn't lie.

Admitting the fact that my brain LIES to me on a daily basis, irks and infuriates me beyond belief....

Just as the physics of Quantum Mechanics is totally illogical compared to Newtonian Physics, nevertheless, it is a fact.

Ergo, the only logical statement to make at this point is that "an unidentifyable airborne object was observed by honest and educated North Texans, moving in an unexplained manner at an unknown velocity". Size, vector, and altitude are entirely moot, and quite UNscientific to even postulate at this time or in this event.

The pencil eraser doesn't lie. Yes, they are the same size.

Admitting the fact that my brain LIES to me on a daily basis, irks and infuriates me beyond belief....

but I admit it, because it is a FACT.
