This aside 2012 will be like every other year and if people thousands of years ago were so good at predicting the end they would have predicted the end of their world (fall of civilization) and they didn't. This thread totally belongs else ware as it has no real scientific value in the least. How do you know they didn't predict their own civilizations end? Just because they didn't some how stop it from happening does not mean they didn't know about it. Right now your not doing anything about POTENTIAL world altering events, your just sitting at your computer blogging on the internet about how nothing will happen to us because were number 1 , ok think you might get my analogy so ill stop. Right now your not doing anything about POTENTIAL world altering events, your just sitting at your computer blogging on the internet about how nothing will happen to us because were number 1 , ok think you might get my analogy so ill stop. The potential of something happening that might upset your life is allways there. You could be hit by a car, a plane could crash on the building you're in, you could catch a cold, you could be hit by lightening, your airco could stop functioning, you could trip over your dog and break a leg, you could be stung by a bee, hell you even could be hit by a meteorite (although the chances are astronomical, to be fair.)..... The potential of something happening is a constant, it should not stop you from living your life without fear, because if your fear the potential of something happening, you don't come out of your house and that's called agoraphobia. And no they didn't predict their own civilization to end, for the record, just as their calendar in fact does not end in 2012, as their writings give several dates after 2012. Golden Duck Posted February 16, 2011 #133 Share Posted February 16, 2011 If you're looking for something special about 2012 try this... The Gregorian calendar has a 400 year cycle. So if you had a calendar from 1612 you could use it next year. If that floats you boat, knock yourself out...

+HerNibs Posted October 10, 2011 #138 Share Posted October 10, 2011 2012 Hoax The "2012 doomsday" is a hoax, a fraud, and an absolute con job. It is a cruel and disgusting lie being promoted by scam artists after money; First they scare people to death that something terrible is going to happen, then publish books and videos on "how to survive the apocalypse". Get the scam?! You're not going to fall for something like that… right? Nibs
_Only Posted October 10, 2011 #139 Share Posted October 10, 2011 (edited) By the way, the last transit was in 2004. Everyone remember the huge natural disasters that happened then? No? That's because the Transit of Venus has nothing to do with anything. Not that I am trying to give yet another ridiculous doomsday interpretation of Mayan calenders any credit, but for accuracy's sake, do you not remember an earthquake and resulting tsunamis that killed over 200,000 people? Huge natural disaster *edit* - Oh my God, this is 10 pages, and I replied to a 2008 post. Oops. Edited October 10, 2011 by Jerry Only
SlimJim22 Posted October 10, 2011 #140 Share Posted October 10, 2011 2012 Hoax Nibs Hey Nibs, do you know of Jean Baudrillard and his theories on hyperreality and simulation? Isn't that exactly what we are experiencing? Jean Baudrillard's philosophy centers on the twin concepts of 'hyperreality' and 'simulation'. These terms refer to the virtual or unreal nature of contemporary culture in an age of mass communication and mass consumption. We live in a world dominated by simulated experiences and feelings, Jean Baudrillard believes, and have lost the capacity to comprehend reality as it actually exists. We experience only prepared realities – edited war footage, meaningless acts of terrorism, the destruction of cultural values and the substitution of 'referendum'. In Jean Baudrillard's words,The very definition of the real has become: that of which it is possible to give an equivalent reproduction… The real is not only what can be reproduced, but that which is always already reproduced: that is the hyperreal… which is entirely in simulation. http://www.egs.edu/faculty/jean-baudrillard/biography/ A short video encapsulating some ideas. Because I think it is our minds that create the reality I do agree with Baudrillard that we are getting further and further away from a 'real' reality. There is much more virtualism, fantasy and going against nature rather than trying to harmonize with it. The Matrix just goes from strength to strength in the philosophy it covers and 2012 may be the time we collectively take the red pill or will the light go out for ever. 2012 is just another sign post but a sign of these times does seem to be suffering and inequity. No difference there then but because people are engaged in the simulation of reality they care less about what is actually going on. So in that sense people do most literally need to wake up from the Matrix and step out of the cave that is there ego and the conventions of society. Searching4Truth91 Posted October 13, 2011 #141 Share Posted October 13, 2011 The world was suppose to end hundreds of times before. And when it didn't, you know what happened? The believes told the public that we were saved because we were so good and behaved. Remember last May? I forget the actual date, but remember the world was suppose to end then? Then that guy who has been planning this for years, had nothing to say. Just because the Mayan calendar ended, does not mean that the world is ending, that just means that, well they never finished it perhaps? The only thing that will happen on December 21, 2012 (or whenever the hell the date is) is Christmas shopping. Because Christmas is just around the corner. Abramelin Posted October 15, 2011 #143 Share Posted October 15, 2011 Not that I am trying to give yet another ridiculous doomsday interpretation of Mayan calenders any credit, but for accuracy's sake, do you not remember an earthquake and resulting tsunamis that killed over 200,000 people? Huge natural disaster *edit* - Oh my God, this is 10 pages, and I replied to a 2008 post. Oops. The transit Emma talked about occurred half a year before that earthquake and resulting tsunami: A rare transit of Venus occurred June 8, 2004, when Venus passed directly between the earth and the sun. Though it seems like that phenomenon should happen frequently, transits come in pairs that are eight years apart, followed alternately by spans of 121 ½ years and 105 ½ years. In the 21st century, the transit pair occurs June 8, 2004, and June 5-6, 2012. This activity offers a simplified explanation of that seemingly irregular period. http://analyzer.depaul.edu/paperplate/Transit%20of%20Venus/transit_frequency.htm
Just Dave Posted October 15, 2011 #144 Share Posted October 15, 2011 I can't believe people are taken in by this. All that will happen in 2012 will be a few nice shows for astronomers. ZaraKitty Posted March 15, 2012 #145 Share Posted March 15, 2012 I think on the 'world ending day' I'm going to buy a heap of blow up dolls, fill them with helium and have them released all over the city in full clothing.
