They Came

By Jane Fearby

Saturday, 13 December 2003

When the world had gone to hell, they came. Part machine, part human, the humanity was no longer there, just blank expressionless killing machines that had one purpose and that was to create more like them. Those of us who managed to avoid the first few round ups, formed a survivalist’s army and did anything we could to hamper them.

We fought them in the streets, with primitive laser weapons, against their heat sensing robotic cubes. To say that it was an even fight would be an understatement. Many of us died that day, but the few that remained, managed to distract the cubes long enough for a small troop to gain entry to their command post. It was a set-up; they were waiting for us, some how they knew we were going to strike that day. Unable to return the way we came, in fear of leading them to the others, we had no choice but to go it alone.

Through the streets we ran, dodging them the best way we knew how. Splitting up into smaller groups to avoid the cyborgs they sent after us. Why they didn’t just send the cubes, we don’t know, maybe they enjoyed a game of hunt and destroy, but we do know that we managed to lose them and that we lived to see another day.

For weeks while they searched, three of us hid out in one of houses in the forest that hadn’t been ruined. There was little to eat, but we had grown accustom to eating little, we made use of what was available. We were lucky enough to have a woman in our group, who knew what plants were edible. That week we ate like kings, but it would only be a matter of time before we were found, we had no doubt of that. We only wished that when they came, the change would be quick.

They did come, in the second week they found us. The room we had chosen was thought to be the strongest, but they came thought the walls like it was nothing. Jenkins was taken first; they snatched him, inserting a probe into his body, releasing the nanobots into his system that would rapidly transform him.

Adams was a little harder to take, being the strongest of our group, he did manage to take one of them out, but it didn’t matter. For everyone we took, there seemed to be ten more just like them ready to take over. Eva the woman in our group, hid in the bathroom, for a time before they found her.

I was the lucky one in our group, they never found me and I lived to tell you this tale. The biggest and meanest of the cyborgs, that was once known to me as Steve, uncovered her hiding place, she was dragged out kicking and punching, it was like taking on a brick wall. The probe was inserted but later it was revealed that it wasn’t a clean insertion. The change took her, but her humanity was left intact.

She became of great use to our course; it was her willingness to put an end to the cyborgs that lead us to a breakthrough. Eva was able to secretly communicate with the collective, understand what tactics they had, when strikes would be carried out even what their weakest points were. Finally we had gained the upper hand at last.

Eva also was able to inform us, that they were curious about human emotions. They understood the meaning readily enough, but it was the act and feeling itself, that concerned them. They conducted experiments with several human captives, hoping to understand it better, but not being able to join with their minds without changing them was futile.

Being from both worlds, Eva volunteered to try and incite emotions in them. It was hoped, somehow, that the act itself would provoke the missing feelings and they would see what they were doing. With the change, her strength had increased ten fold, but she was still no match for Steve. He was the first one we could find to experiment with, and would have to do.

Upon seeing Eva, somehow, he knew that something wasn’t quite right, his first action was to finish the transformation, they fought for some time, but when Eva’s actions of a kiss confused him, his hostilities ceased. For a moment he stood motionless as Eva kissed and stroked his flesh. It was almost like he was trying to analyse what was happening. Then something amazing happened.

Slowing, his arms took Eva in a gentle embrace and he returned her kiss. Pulling Steve to the ground, Eva came to rest on his chest, deepening the kiss and her touch. Slowly but surely, we observed the exhilaration growing in Steve. His arousal took hold, as he rolled Eva beneath him and entered her. It was exciting for us to witness. Eva had managed to bring out some passion in him; clearly it was something we had never seen before.

They mated vigorously, for what seemed like hours, and when the release came, so came Steve’s full emotions, his mind had returned, he was whole again. He knew who he was, and what had taken place over the last year. Over the next few weeks, we watched, waited and prayed that it would hold.

In the end, it was decided that while it lasted, Steve and Eva would mate with as many cyborgs as they could. If it had worked on Steve, then we hoped that it would work on the others. At first they were turning them back as fast as we could change them, but slowly, Steve, Eva and the ones that they had transformed began to gain the upper hand, and with in a year only a few of them remained.

Everything went better then we could have hoped for, but we did get a surprise. Within four months of their emotions being returned, the nanobots deserted their bodies, and they were whole again. Eva and Steve were highly decorated for their actions, bringing an end to the war. They wed last week and already have a child on the way. We are all waiting in anticipation to see what world the child belongs to.
