annmariet Posted May 13, 2008 #2 Share Posted May 13, 2008 Been trying to do some research because the movie is based on "true events," anyone have info on the true crime this movie is based on? From what I read on imdb it is very loosely based on the Manson murders..... The director has stated in an interview that he was inspired by the Manson murders, and this story is very loosely based on those. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0482606/faq#.2.1.

annmariet Posted May 13, 2008 #4 Share Posted May 13, 2008 manson eh? yeah, weird since I just read that Manson thread It must be loosely based since nothing in the previews or what I have read really reminds me of anything from the Manson family....I actually thought they were ghosts or something in the preview, not real people so that just goes to show how little I know!! From what I could tell, they were just real people wearing masks and acting creepy. The little quote from the movie has Steven Tylers daughter saying "why are you doing this to us" and the creepy reply "because you were home". I for one, HATE these types of movies. It's torture porn, and it's cinema at its worst and most vile. Saw, Hostel, Captivity, etc. are all crap.

jasmine_flower Posted May 16, 2008 #8 Share Posted May 16, 2008 You know that they just said that so people would want to watch it more. The horror movies are getting old. they need a new advertising angle, so they use "it's real".

Funky Poacher Posted May 20, 2008 #11 Share Posted May 20, 2008 Looks awful. I hate movies that are "based" on things and are barely "based" on it at all. ... Except Liv Tyler is adorable. She seems to have lost a bit of weight for the movie though. I still won't watch it though.
Nessieman23 Posted May 21, 2008 #12 Share Posted May 21, 2008 I for one, HATE these types of movies. It's torture porn, and it's cinema at its worst and most vile. Saw, Hostel, Captivity, etc. are all crap. I dont really see it as torture porn, I hate Saw, Hostel and those kind of movies, however: the Strangers seems like it's leaning more towards the Amytiville Horror (1975) and Halloween (1978), those classics. There are numerous similarities between The Strangers and Halloween. -Masks (obviously) -The antagonist stalking the protagonist -The "Final Girl" complex (what makes slasher movies what slasher movies are) -Light use of gore, not too much, not too little As you can see, it's merely a slasher film, And the atmosphere of it kind of reminds me of The Amytiville Horror. I don't know, I'm personally looking forward to it. May 30th is when it comes out by the way. Also, back on topic, Wikipedia says it was based on the Keddie Resort Murders, and Manson murders. Funky Poacher Posted May 21, 2008 #13 Share Posted May 21, 2008 I myself would like to know how it's supposed to be based on the Manson murders.
annmariet Posted May 23, 2008 #14 Share Posted May 23, 2008 From what I could tell, they were just real people wearing masks and acting creepy. It's torture porn, and it's cinema at its worst and most vile. Saw, Hostel, Captivity, etc. are all crap. I found it to be so much creepier when I saw the first teaser and it appeared that they were not just psychos in masks, but looked more like apparitions of some sort - the teaser showed a few scenes that made it look like the mask wearing folks were there watching and the other characters didn't even know they were in the room, but that all changed with the latest trailer....I do like horror movies, but I am a bit sick of "gorno" myself....I want to be creeped out and scared, not grossed out! Shakezulah Posted May 24, 2008 #17 Share Posted May 24, 2008 The movie actually seems to be an English version of a French horror movie call "Them", which was based on similar murders that took place somewhere in Europe. The Strangers probably takes influence from both that and the Manson murders. And I've actually heard a lot of very, very good things about this movie, despite how average the trailer may look. I think this may just be worth seeing.

Pythia Posted May 31, 2008 #19 Share Posted May 31, 2008 I've heard, don't know if it's true of course, that the movie is loosely based on these murders. http://www.cabin28.com/
777MileStare Posted June 1, 2008 #20 Share Posted June 1, 2008 Question, how is it loosely based on the Manson murders, when theres cell phones involved? Talk about loosely based, the least they couldve done is make it look like it happened in the late sixties....I saw the movie, and I was very dissapointed. Korbus Posted June 1, 2008 #22 Share Posted June 1, 2008 Saw this flick over the weekend. It's nothing special. It's actually sorta funny, if you can believe that. I mean, my friends and the rest of the theater were laughing....at how DUMB it was. If you're into mindless entertainment, it might be worth a dvd rental or something in a few months. Plus, thre's not really all that much gore. It's more a psychological scare than blood and guts. I think it's important to note that the film is "inspired" by true events. That's very different than saying "based on" true events. Basically, it's a movie about home invasion. So anything related to a home invasion, I guess, could have theoretically "inspired" the screenplay. It kinda plays on a common fear among a lot of people, ya know? They're probably just using the same type of ad campaign as with The Blair Witch Project. We all know that wasn't real, but they gave the impression it was. Same thing with a movie like Fargo. That was "based on" true events too, but it wasn't really. It's just a filmmaker's trick to make people wonder about it after they leave the theater, that's all. Anyway, check it out if you wanna. Or if you don't, don't. It made 20 million over the weekend, so look for a sequel next year, probably.

kreestar Posted July 2, 2008 #24 Share Posted July 2, 2008 I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but apparently the writer/director also states that it he based (possibly just one incident in the movie) it off an occurrence at his home when he was younger, when a person came to the door asking for someone who didn't live there. And he later learned there had been robberies around his neighborhood. I was actually surprised by the movie, it reminded me of Halloween- one of my favorite movies. sage0409 Posted July 4, 2008 #25 Share Posted July 4, 2008 I thought the scene when the "Mama Tried" song was blasting was pretty scary. My 14 yo thought the only things Mansonesque was the time period decor of the house and the scene where Liv Tyler was clutching the grass, a la poor Abigail Folger (she was found the next morning with her hand grabbing the grass). I spent the rest of the movie wondering how that child even knew that. I concluded that I am a terrible mother.
