More importantly, Coyote belongs to all the people, he is a part of Native tradition that transcends this or that tribal identity. Coyote stories come from all over the continent, but they all describe the same being. Not all tribes deal with Coyote or even recognize him, but where they do, Coyote is Coyote. He is a part of the land, Clovis, no one owns him, he is no one's "unique tradition." The Indians that I know, are not possessive of their deities the way Judeo-Christians tend to be (operative word there: tend). I think there is One True God ----- 'he' just doesn't follow any religion or belief nor belongs to one. oh people can claim so ......... like kids fighting over a toy.
