When a stranger's at your door late at night

I have a couple stories.

One time roughly about twenty years ago when I was a kid my family and I went on vacation. We stayed in a log cabin for a week in a resort some where in Ohio. My brother and I shared a room together with opposing beds. My bed was directly under the window. During one of the nights I noticed a shadow on the wall above my brothers bed in the form of a human figure. It looked like it was trying to hide behind the wall and would keep on leaning over and peaking into the room. I was paralyzed with fear and couldn't muster up the courage to look around and see who it was. I staid perfectly still and watched this shadow on the wall for what felt like hours until I finally fell asleep. The next morning I asked my brother if he saw the shadow too but he slept through the whole thing. I told my family about it but they didn't believe me. Luckily the shadow didn't come back again. To this day I have no idea who or what it was.

Then Last summer I awoke in my apartment one morning. I had fallen asleep on the couch. I looked over at the front door and noticed that it wasn't closed all the way. It was shut but it was cracked just very slightly. I looked around and I wasn't missing anything so I really have no idea what happened and why my door was partially open like that. I'm sure to keep it locked at all times though now.

This happened a couple of years ago, to me it wasn't scary but just plain weird. my fiance (now husband) where at home during the day watching t.v generally just hanging and enjoying the time together. Then there was knock on the door, to which my man opened it and there was a woman and a man standing there with a bucket and mop. My man asked what they wanted and they said "we are going to wash your windows for free" generally we would be up to the idea but there seemed something 'off' with these people. So my man said "no, thank-you they have been washed already" this is were it gets weird.

After my man says this the man and woman start hurling abuse at us because we said no and calling him every name under the sun that they could think of at the time. So i get up from the couch because i had been listening the whole time and ask them what there problem is, but they just walked away. So my man just closes the door and comes to sit down. we just start talking like wtf was that about? then we start hearing yelling and screaming coming from the front of our house. We both get up and look out the living room window (which faces the street) and there the couple are yelling and hurling abuse about us.

So my man yells at them to go way, after this happened we were both thinking "well, maybe they are going around people's houses to clean there windows for money or something" but as we watched them walk away they never went to any other home on our street they just walked away. weird.

Cool post, lots of interesting reads:D

well with me it happened twice, first was this winter, someone knocked and rang our door 3 am in the night. not like hard or something, just regular polite how you do it, i went in the hallway which was dark(and we have a light outside so its impossible for people on the outside to watch whats going on in the hallway, pluss the glass is like frosted or something) and i see a siluettho of a person, gender unknown. then i hear trough the door (its not that good isolated) "hmmmmm" the person turned and went away. never to be seen again here.

Another time happened last summer, there was Very warm, Norway is usually colder than it was. anyway, the porch door was open cause of the warmth, it was maybe 2am, a guy walkes trough the porch door, goes to the livingroom table, and goes "This was the wrong house, i am very sorry and embarresed, i hope you can forgive me, i did and he went on his way. pretty funny:P

They could have been thieves. Some house thieves have been known to do stuff like that so they can get a better look at the inside of your house. Like if a person asked to use my phone I would bring the cordless to them. I heard of these thieves on the news they had a van with a fake company name on it and they would go to peoples houses and would knock on their door and say that they are a new steam cleaning company and offer a free steam cleaning to spread the word of their new business. So the people would agree and they would steam clean their house for free and look around the house at the same time. Then like a week later the peoples house would be robbed.

Back when I was 8 or 9, I was left home alone a very cold winter's evening. Now this was during my believe-everything-I-read fase, and at that point in time I was very much into ghosts (and completely terrified ****less by them and other things). I was just passing the time, sitting on the living room floor watching TV, when I heard what sounded like scratching noises on the glass of our front door. This door was pretty much all-glass with a wooden frame, so anything could get through it, and for 10-15 minutes the scratching noises kept continuing a few minutes appart.

I was horrified and frozen in place, listening to this, and I was so relieved when my mother and sister finally came home. Though I was very confused when my sister yelled "Why didn't you come out and help us?!"

Turns out, the small gate to our frontyard had frozen shut and they had been stuck outside. They had been throwing coins at the front door to get my attention so I could come out and help them.

I was a stupid 8 year old.

I've had a few experiences throughout my life. Some were creepy, but most were just random things.

The creepiest one was when I was kid and staying over at a friend's house for the night. I had just woken up really late at night after passing out on the back of a couch right next to a huge window looking out to his backyard. I looked over to the window(mind you my face is only about a foot away) and there was some guy just standing there staring straight at me! Needless to say I flipped **** and started yelling and screaming, cursing up a storm. I fell off the couch and woke up all my friends who saw the guy running away. Can't say I've ever been more afraid in my life.

More recently my girlfriend and I were living in an apartment complex in Houston, Tx and at about 2 a.m. one night we heard some knocking at the door. My girlfriend was already up so she started to walk towards the door to see who it was(we had neighbors and friends stop by all times of the night, so it wasn't unusual) when all of the sudden the two guys outside kicked the door open and one of them came halfway into our place. My girlfriend was screaming and I ran towards the door and managed to push him back out(I'm not a small dude  ) and they both ran away. Called the cops blahblahblah.

I had another crazy experience last night which made me think of this thread straight away.

I heard a bit of commosion outside my house but looked out the window and couldn't see anything so just carried on watching TV. Around 10 mins later there was a knock at the door followed by a slow, almost scrapeing like sound. I went to open the door, which is glass at the top and wood at the bottom and opens out, but it wouldn't open as if something was blocking it. So I go out my back door and for some reason take one of my golf clubs with me just incase and walk round the front of my house. As I aproach the front of the house I can hear someone breathing heavy and obviously in pain I round the corner and see a guy sitting against my door clutching his stomach. I look around to see if I can see anyone else then aproach the guy to see what the problem is. As I aproach him my fiance followed me out the back door I told her to call the police and an ambulance. The guy had blood all over his hands as I leant over him I saw a knife by his side on the floor about 3 or 4 inches from his hand as I looked at him he made a grab for it but I managed to grab it first and throw it away. I called to my fiance to get me a towel and some water for him and told him I would help him out untill the ambulance came. He kept saying he was ok but I wouldn't let him leave as he was in a really, really bad way. Anyway the ambulance an cops turned up and he was rushed to hospital I gave a statement and handed the knife over then went to bed around 3 am. The next morning I went outside to clean up any bloodthat was left and to see if I could see anything I had missed in the dark. There was a trail of blood going down my street and ending at my front door. It looked like a scene from the movies! The police came round about 2pm and filled me in on what had happened.

A woman had called them last night aroud 10 mins after I did saying a man tryed to attack her on her way home and in an effort to escape she struggled and managed to push his own knife into his stomach. Apparently she was really shaken up and worried she had killed him. The officer I talked to thinks the man could be responsible for anything up to 20 sex attacks in the area and possibly 2 murders too. To be honest if I had know that I may not have been so keen to help.

The experience has definately freaked me out but I'm just glad the woman he attacked is ok and that he has been caught and can't do anyone else any harm. Sorry about the long drawn out story but needed to share just to get it off my chest!

I'm currently living in a house with three friends. During the time of this account, it was only two of us. There was this loud banging at the front door at about 1 AM. I looked out the peephole, but there was no one there. I thought maybe whoever it was was standing beside the door, so we checked the windows, and saw nothing. My friend grabbed her pistol(and she's a good shot!) so we could check around the house. It wasn't just a "did you hear something?" knock, it was a "holy hell who's trying to break down the door?" knock, so we were going to see who did it. No one was around so we went back in. A few hours later, at about 4 AM, it happened AGAIN. I screamed and my friend grabbed her pistol again, and said, "If the door is kicked down, duck!" We looked through the upstairs windows, but there was no one.

A few days later, our third friend moved in. That night, she woke us up screaming, saying someone was knocking hard on her window. At that point we called the police. Really, all we can do is keep doors and windows locked. I also never keep my curtain open at night, even though I sleep on the 2nd floor. It's been weeks, and luckily, nothing has happened again.

I have two stories here that definately deserve to be on this thread.

1. I was in a cabin type structure on a lake (One full floor, small kitchenette, good sized bathroom and a small non enclosed bedroom on the "second floor") with about two or three other cabins with the same floor plan near us. We have weekly things where we all do something. Very nice and close place where everyone knows each other.

So I was sitting on the couch watching Tv on the couch and I hear the sliding door being nudged. I get up and look out the shades thinking it was the landlord putting the bill in the crack in the door. No it was a black male trying to open the door. I didn't say anything but I hit the alarm button on the panel and got my gun. (It wasn't loaded and that was the only way I could keep it on the property was by having it unloaded and the landlord could come in and check it as per the lease)

The guy runs off and I go to put the gun down when a rock smashes through the sliding door. I scream "I HAVE A ****ING GUN AND I WILL SHOOT." The guy opens the door as I am saying this and by the time he hears it he is inside the door. So I stood there with my gun and the guy stands there. I'm shaking and the adrenaline is pumping at this time and he sees my 10 Gauge Shotgun pointed at him. He tell him to get out of here as I have a gun and if he takes a step toward me I will shoot him because he is trespassing.

A few moments after this his friend I think (Another guy who yelled the guys name as the guy ran really fast out of there) said the cops were coming as a siren could be heard. A few minutes later two squad cars came and looked at the area. I told them the situation and they said they knew the suspects well and took the rock the guy had thrown through the door. A week later the cop came back and told me the kid was going to be arraigned (He was 17) and they wanted me as a witness. I managed to not have to go and really was glad for that as they took my testimony and the kid plead out to a less charge and got until he was 21 as that was the most he could anyway.

I know the gun was stupid but I wasn't thinking. I was like 18 at the time I think.

.

Both of those were weird and I think the first one I may have died if I didn't threaten him with the gun.

i cant believe the land lord would have such a policy, thats insane....the only thing you did wrong was not have the shells handy to load into the gun as you picked it up.but it goes to show you criminals are not afraid of the site of a gun like law abiding citizens are.most of them have had a gun pointed at them before.

revers experience in my first rent house,,,,,,,,

coming home from going out one night me and my room mate pulled up to the house and we saw a shadow move across the window...we ran onto the porch and threw open the door just in time to see the back door swing back and forth....we walked in the house to discover who ever broke in decided to make a huge sandwich, rent porn on the payperview(still playing) and drink our beer...the crazy thing was, this was one of the few times i left my pistol at the house. my pistol, fresh stack of cash (just got paid) and a really expensive 35mm camera was left sitting on the counter he/she never touched it.

2nd weird experience,,comical as well

its like 1 in the after noon there is a knock on the door,im home with my almost 2yrold daughter and my 125lbs rottweiler,,i answer the door and there is a guy saying he has my new phone and tries to push his way in the house and hand me the phone.well the dog freaks when he see the guy push on the door so im trying to hold the guy out and hold the dog inside...im a big guy 6ft 300lbs,,so as im doing this i mange to work my way outside and lock the dog inside..the dog is going crazy barking and trying to get the door open with his paws and mouth,,my daughter starts crying causing the dog to bark even more trying to let me know she was upset...i start arguing with the guy that i never ordered a phone and i guess once we got face to face he got nervous seeing me and my tattoos and the look of anger on my face realized,i was not a push over apologized and ran off. i watched him jump in his car and drive off. i turned around to go in the house,THE DAMN DOOR WAS LOCKED....THE DAMNED DOG LOCKED ME OUT THE HOUSE...so now he and my daughter a locked inside together she is cryng and he is barking and whimpering freaking out,,,,im freaking out, this was the first time i had my daughter by myself since me and her mom broke up.and everything is going wrong,,so i call my mom and brother hoping they had the spare key to my house but no joy...then the crying and barking stop and everything goes quiet,,,real quiet too quiet.so i run around the house trying to look in the windows but i cant see anything..i run back to the front door as my mom and little brother pull up to give me a hand i decide to kick the door in...BOOM the door flies open like a bad cop movie and there in the middle of my living room floor is my dog laying on its side and my daughter using his stomach as a pillow both taking a nap...i was never so relieved and mad all at at the same time..

I had an old boyfriend show up at 3 in the morn. I ran him off with a rifle. But it was a toy one. Stupid idiot couldn't tell the difference.

I rarely open the door for anyone after ten pm if I'm not expecting some one. I did one night though. A woman was outside crying. She' almost been raped and was looking for help. I let her in and called 911 from my cell in the process. Good idea to keep your phone in hand in when someone's at your door late at night.

  • 4 weeks later...

I remembered something that happened 5 or so years ago. I was living alone and was woken up at around 2am by the phone. Someone yelled at me in this demented voice "We got porn, we got porn!" I'm, like, that's *sarcasm* awesome  and was about to hang-up when I realised it was my boyfriend.

Apparently his friend's grandfather had given him and the friend an old computer he was planning to junk. My boyfriend and his friend were going through the files before erasing them, and had found a hidden folder of porn. The idea of a 88-year-old grandfather of three with a hidden cashe of porn was very amusing to them and they had to tell me right away.

You should never just open the door without asking who it is. Especially at 1am.

Or without a gun at that time of night,And no one ever said you had to be friendly at that time of night either.

There was a big beautiful blonde hottie at my front-door last night, hitting it with an axe.

In the end I had to let her out.

I was sleeping on the couch the other night because my sister was sleeping in my room. Around 4 a.m. I heard a loud crash and went to go check it out. Turns out some drunk teenager's had gotten out of hand and had went on a window smashing spree around my neighbor hood. What smashed my window was a bag of milk. There was milk everywhere and it smelled for days. It was horrible because i was watching a horror movie at the time and i thought that some one was trying to kill me.

That's awful!

:sleepy: well i read some of those posts and well there were too many from even years on back lol and some of them were quite frightening and freaky, however i don't think they've been as extreme for me haha. Let's see yes umm i recall there'd be some man yelling out randomly late at night i didn't even know what he was saying, but one night i was sort of curious as i walked by towards the store, so i peered in at some church not far and saw that it was a homeless man, i asked him as to why it was he was yelling out lol, and he answered "Oh well i talk to these trees, do you know how old this tree is here?" And so then it dawned on me his maddening yelling did in fact make some sane sense lol. Let's see as well another time it looked like some teenager just came knockin on my door, i didn't know the person but he asked me if i had anything to eat, so i said umm yeah sure so i let him in and he asked if i had cereal, so i handed him a bowl of cereal in milk and ummm lol he just left and said thx. I suppose he must've been high and had the munchiez lol. Anyhow thas just my account. :P

I had a friend who had a 2 story cabin up on the mountain where I grew up. I often stayed there in order to get an early start hunting in the morning. One time I was sleeping in the bedroom upstairs (the only room on that story) and I woke up early to get ready. It was about 4am when I looked out the window and saw a man walking by. Now, he wasn't walking up or down the mountain, he was walking across. He had no rifle, shotgun or cameo clothing for hunting although you can't hunt till daybreak anyway. He never turned his head to look in the direction of the cabin even though he was no more than 15ft from the back door. I knew everyone within a 5 mile radius but didn't recognize him. Even stranger things have happened up there but I've always wondered what that guy was doing. People didn't walk up that mountain unless they had to and it was usually to hunt...In the daytime.

Hehe, that's a good way to deal with it. :P

I don't think about this often but I have to admit it's a big fear of mine. Since I was 13 I had to spend most nights alone since my mom worked nights and I suppose that's what started it. If I'm alone I still don't like looking outside at night. I'm almost more afraid of someone just wandering around quietly than actually at my door, like what jbondo was talking about. Simple, subtle things can seem creepier to me.

The only experience I have was when I was maybe 8 or 9 and some woman (maybe 20-ish) showed up at the door really late, freaking out. I thought she was one of my bro's friends but it turned out she was running from her boyfriend who was being violent and she went to the first house with a light on. The cops had to come and everything. Could've been worse I guess but it was still pretty freaky. You know something's wrong at that age when someone shows up in the middle of the night and you're told to go to your room til someone says it's ok to come out lol.

This never happened to me but my freind which is a girl told me this and it was also in the news papers. also pardon my bad spelling. But there was a man in a car wathching her house for days.

until one night he got out of his car and knocked on her door. she answed her door and the man graped her and pulled her out side. and luckly for her. her nighbor who fought in iraqe was takeing out the grabage and saw what was happening saved her. what she told me wa he grabed the man and through him to the ground and pined him there. she called the police and the man was arrested on assult charges and then was charged with more charges. he had a crimminal recored for rape. lets just say he won't be out for some time from prison.
