UM-Bot Posted September 23, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2008 Image credit: JJ Lumsden Unexplained Mysteries: JJ Lumsden's "The Hidden Whisper" is an intriguing cross between a detective novel and a good old-fashioned ghost story. The plot follows the experiences of Dr. Luke Jackson, a British parapsychologist who while visiting his grandparents in Arizona becomes unwittingly roped in to investigating a series of mysterious events at the house of a local retired couple. Throughout the story Luke uses his background in parapsychology and a great deal of logical deduction to try to solve the mystery, meeting and interacting with a variety of interesting characters along the way. One of the main things that sets this book apart is that it is filled with conversations in which Luke describes and explains various aspects of parapsychology and the paranormal to other characters. In addition to forwarding the story this provides the reader with some genuine background information about these subjects, the book also includes an extensive end section expanding on this. It's a nice idea and a welcome change of pace that provides a break in the plot now and again. "The Hidden Whisper" is overall an engaging read that should appeal to fans of both detective and paranormal fiction, the added factual information included throughout should also appeal to those with an interest in the paranormal in general.
