A Black President for USA

I am not an american and don't pay attention alot to politics, so sorry for my ignorance

Would people react the same thing if Obama was Asian, or Arab, or gay... muslim, native american or any other minority group?

Time will tell what the consequences will be. While he's tenure will begin in a tough situation, he's also going to be the successor of GW; I don't think I'm the only one who thinks he'd be hard pressed to do worse. I hope he does well and doesn't eat his word on everything he's said. People around the world are excited about Obama because Republican foreign policy hasn't exactly convinced anyone. Right now there is more hope for peace because Obama has shown willingness for diplomacy and at least does not appear aggressive. It should be obvious why he's preferred to Bush and McCain but I suppose if you're an American conservative and don't follow foreign issues a lot, it's not that obvious.

Black, White, or Other - he's a human being. Why should skin colour be a determining factor in a person's actions? If anything happens it is a result of his own human qualities, regardless of his skin.

Hey, he shut the Clintons up AND won the election.

For starters, Obama's victory is one the greatest possible rejections of racism and bigotry. Celebration.

He is articulate and engaging when he speaks. To all but the greedy, the scared and the misguided, Bush has been making the world despair, cringe, laugh or simply change channel for years. Finally, finally GOP rule has been consigned to history. Celebration.

There's significantly less chance of any nation's troops being sent off to 'Coalition' wars based on self interest and explained by lies. Celebration.

There's now a clear mandate for major regulatory change in financial industries that are demonstrating the potential to wipe the meagre wealth of countless millions 'off the map' and which the GOP would be loathe to enforce. Celebration.

Enormous challenges, big ifs, but there's a clear path for a lot of things to change if the Democrats have the courage. Celebration. GObama!

Black, White, or Other - he's a human being. Why should skin colour be a determining factor in a person's actions? If anything happens it is a result of his own human qualities, regardless of his skin.

I have to agree with you PA. The problems the USA are presently facing will be daunting for a President of any colour.

The consequences in America is that there are no more excuses. All men are now created equal. Martin Luther King's dream has also finally came true. This is a beautiful day for America. All barriers have been broken, we should all be proud to be an American right now. Regardless of who you voted for, you have to be proud. We have came a long way in a short period of time. No matter what anyone tells you, this country is strong and it is only getting stronger with age. I love this country with every bone in my body and I know every single American does as well.

That's right. All MEN have been created equal, but not all barriers have been broken. It's a start. Black men had the right to vote before women. Our turn is next, I'm just glad it's not Palin breaking that barrier.

Hi PhoenixDown -- As I see it “being black” is neither positive or negative about anybody, including President-to-be, Obama;

What is “positive”, imo, are Obama’s policies for the future of the USA (and, for most of the Western world too, imo).

A quick look back into history:

The *turning point in “being black”* goes back some 40 years, to the The Civil Rights Act of 1968. I guess that is when Black Americans started to be accepted as having “equal rights” to white American citizens. Till then, they were regarded as second-rate human beings at best. I doubt if our younger generation has much comprehension of what “segregation” involved in the USA before then.

A quick peek into a possible (???) future:

Now that the USA is about to have a black President, in my opinion the world is entering into a new era; whether that era will be good or bad is open to question – but – if one goes to Obama’s web site home page at http://www.barackobama.com/index.php and scrolls through his propositions, the future is a paradise-in-the-making; that is, if Obama’s plans could be made a reality.

A passing comment on the aftermath of the election:

I watched video after video, and I saw literal mass hysteria (especially amongst young people) that resembled a crazed religious revival, rather than a political event. This makes me wonder as to whether Obama will mirror a political statesman or an Elmer Gantry in his presidency.

Anyway, for what it's worth, that’s my take on what has just made history in the USA.

What do others think about the possibilities that face the USA now, under Obama as President of the USA?

Pa, bravo, I couldn't of said this better...where we live its diverse and we cannot see in in color or gender or sexual preference etc....

we have to find ways to get along, be a bridge to each other ....

since when do we measure a man by superfical trappings of ideologies, one measures anyone by the way they use their life to be the difference and this speaks loud and clear ... ....Obama has spoken with an example that he is a man who sees in equality and brings people together, what a wonderful example for our children i say its about time.......

I have been in alot of elections and this is the first one I have seen people coming out of their houses screaming for joy that obama won..... and kids 7, 8 years old engaged in the political process, discussing, debating why they wanted obama for president, obama the man ............

everyone gets that this is big for the US and for the rest of the world.........color has no meaning here...

Not if he ran a similar campaign and made similar promises...but then he wouldn't be a Republican.

As for why people partied up here, well there's a few reasons. First off it's an excuse to party. Second while we did our election in two months, we've been hearing about the American election for over a year now. So we find ourselves becoming invested, like a tv show or something. Third he's a Democrat, which is closer to the Canadian political outlook. Your left wing party is our right wing party. Fourth he's a nice guy, as is McCain for that matter. They speak well and draw large crowds. Obama has charisma, something that all of our political leaders lack (well except for maybe Layton but he's become a bit out there of late). Lastly it is a historical election with the first minority president to be elected.

So it's not hard to see how people from other countries could get invested in American politics to the point where they see it as some sporting event and rooting for a favorite team. Personally I'm more glad the damn thing is over but I can understand how others can get caught up in it.

I concur, the more i read i see this a good thing he is pres..... it seems his message can help alot of folks get past their intolerances and fears......

they say when the student is ready the teacher will appear, in order to even entertain the concept of a democracy we will have to come together , use disagreement to challenge each other to growth and expand the definition of toleration....let go of ideologies that polarize us with hatred.........

i say he has his work cut out for him but from what i can see he is up to the task..

the thing is he is not making promises he is engaging people in the vision of democracy it will take all of us we can;t just put this at his feet as we have done with the republicans so when they fail we can blame them and absolve ourselves....its time we except responsibility. learn to manage them and be accountable also ....its time we grow up I say....

The keyword there is "honesty" in what I said.

And, to the person that said something about it being all about his policies...well, that is well and good if you agree with him. I don't.

Like I said, we will see. Who knows I may end up liking him, stranger things have happened. Right now I think he is a phony, and I think he has made way too many promises that he won't be able to keep. I am also concerned by the way people almost seem to worship the guy. The adoration is almost scary.
