I can't believe how much the extreme right seem to be so concerned with their own well being "I'm alright Jack" ,

They begrudge paying a few extra dollars (perhaps) in taxes to maintain and equitable health service where all can be treated fairly.....if you've got the insurance you'll still be okay. At the moment you could die on some streets there and be stepped over because you don't have the doe rae mee

Just totally not true. NOT. AT. ALL. It's a myth that for some reason, millions of people that DON'T LIVE IN THE US believe. I have a sister-in-law that does NO work, and yet has a 2 bdrm apartment, has had THREE elective surgeries, and sees a doctor whenever she needs to. Do NOT tell me people die in the streets here in the US because they have no health insurance, it's NOT TRUE!

To listen to some of the fears being voiced you'd think that all your money is going to be taken and you're going to be put to work in the wrokhouses....seems that some of that republican ptropoganda really works eh?.

Actually, MOST conservatives already work. It's the welfare mongers that elected Obama that are worried about having to work for a living.

Anf yet it doesn't seem to matter to these right wingers that Bush has spent TRILLIONS on a war in Iraq that has and will achieve nothing, and will need to be paid for by your taxes for many years to come. And dont try and say otherwise...Iraq had NOTHING to do with 911 and guess what ,they had NO weapons of mass destruction either.......But hey what harm....Haliburton are making big money there right ?

Is this "The American Way" the Right are so proud of?.

Give Obama a chance with your help he will make you the greatest nation on Earth once again..... we all hope and pray

Iraq sucks. No argument. We should have left that and the rest of the third-world-toilets created by Europe a hundred years ago alone. I'm tired of paying someone else's tab.

That explains my relatives coming to the US to "visit" all the time...and see doctors while they are here.

To all the assorted Europeans and others out there, I hate to say it but...things are not that bad here. Bush is a **** and very poorly spoken. All true. Most of his policies have worked, and after Clinton, the US needed that type of government.

Iraq sucks. The cowardly UN should have taken care of that issue, and we should have simply kicked *** and left. Personally, I'm tired of cleaning up disasters caused by a century of European abuse of third world toilets. But, Bush saw it differently. In the future, I hope it's all left to France to clean up.

Expect more of the same from Obama, with a flashier speech and a pretty face. Little will change, but it'll look prettier from over on your "side of the pond".

What amazes me most, is this myth that the US is full of un-insured homeless people with no jobs and no food.

We (my family) have never seen so many homeless & mentally ill on the streets as here. And we lived all over the U.S.-even our doctor an American said this place is a hell-hole compared to Europe. He said we are too busy making wars-instead of helping those to help themselves. I agree that the Welfare system sucks but that is because it's implemented UNintelligently. That's Reaganomics for ya. There are more poor & extremely wealthy than ever-the middle class is thinning out. Not good. The middle class is the back-bone.

There are people all over here that apparently don't bathe & talk to themselves. The drug policy is a joke too. Crack, Ice & speed addicts are rampant here. WHY ???

They aren't starving at least from what I see.

That should not happen in a country that has the most rich.

They need intensive mental health intervention. Not just food stamps.

People are often placed into a Church, the Military (a war), a Mansion or a cardboard box. :P

We have had friends over from Europe that were shocked by all the poverty (& extreme wealth).

The opportunities to make it big here through hard work are still excellent compared to Europe IMO. But some people need help to get them into shape to even attempt it. If your down on the floor-sometimes you need people to help you up-not kick them while they are laying on the ground, and once they can do that -then you can say "go get em boy"

I just got offered a great , very good paying job unexpectedly. All I did is e-mail a company requesting some info, non-related. The president & CEO responded within 1/2 hour ,invited me in, we talked for an hour and he offered me a job ! And I'm not even really qualified , they will train me. This would never happen in Germany but I know it happens here. So it has alot of good to offer too. there are many things that are better here.

MLOR one of the biggest things that many are saying is religion is not the majority or even close that really it is in its last hours.... that the majority seek peace and unity and are tired of ideologies that seperate us with doctrines of hatred and fear....

we are actually in the process of a great transformation of ideology that no longer is divisive and fear based..its a great moment for all of us around the globe not just the US...

that as a majority globally we want the same thing to get along and find ways to celebrate our diversity.....

Exactly-at least we have a fighting chance now.

We had no chance with Bush & his cronies.

I will be very happy when I actually witness change.

This country has ENORMOUS talents, energy & capabilities.

I know I sound one-sided.

And I know every country has it's pro & cons, but I get tired of the "we are the greatest in everything & every way BS".

It's not true & very smug & arrogant.

There is very little understanding & compassion by some I see here.

I find the hatred & snubbing of the poor alarming.

YES, Because since I was a little girl I have always wanted to live in a Socialist Nation where my government controls every aspect of my life.

If you would educate yourself you would see this is not true.

OH Wait, NO I haven’t!!!!!!! I would have moved to Canada. Because their health care system is Working sooooo marvelously.

If you would educate yourself you would see this is also not true not to mention uncalled for.

Being put on a waiting list to see a crappy Dr. is not my idea a good healthcare.

Thanks for punctuating to the rest of the world why our fine country of has hit the bucket.

I can’t wait to see all the wonderful "New Change" Obama has in store.

As an American, I've been raised (born and raised in St.Louis btw) by my parents to appreciate the importance of balance when it comes to government.

I may or may not have voted for the man, but as an American I will stand behind him when he enters office, after that teehee  Dropping the the kiss the ring or kiss my *** attitude would be very welcome change.

One thing that slightly worries me is Obama's constant talk of "World " this. And " Global " that.

Maybe I listen to Pat Buchanan too much. And have a bit of an " isolationist " streak in me. But that tone doesn't go over very well with me.

Your right - Obama is still just a Democrat and from this alone one should not be carried away by the illusions, as during the times we are witnessing it is really hard to distinguish between Repocrats and Depublicans. But on the other hand, the fact that he is not a WASP would definitely serve on larger scale to the unification of American nation, as this is a sort of a historical initiation point, USA passes now. Certainly his policies would be reflecting the interests of the same guys who are now holding the planet at gun-point, I have little doubts in this - but this is just life, and it does not matter, crisis is now or not, war or peace, Globalization or Isolation, but still America has won this one, so I also want to join those who send their congratulations. Well-done, America!

What amazes me most, is this myth that the US is full of un-insured homeless people with no jobs and no food.

This is a myth? Really?

* As many as 3.5 million people experience homelessness in a given year (1% of the entire U.S. population or 10% of its poor), and about 842,000 people in any given week.[10] Most were homeless temporarily. The chronically homeless population (those with repeated episodes or who have been homeless for long periods) fell from 175,914 in 2005 to 123,833 in 2007.[11]

Familial composition[12]

* 40% are families with children—the fastest growing segment.

* 41% are single males.

* 14% are single females.

* 5% are minors unaccompanied by adults.

1.37 million (or 39%) of the total homeless population are children under the age of 18.[13]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homelessness_...e_United_States

You don't SEE them, but that doesn't mean they're not there!

I was homeless from the time I was 6 til I was 9, then again from 13 to 15. We lived in shelters and in cars. I lied about my age a few times to get temp jobs cleaning rooms in motels. You don't realize how many homeless people there are until you're with them. MOST aren't lucky enough to get out.. I had a friend from the shelters when I was a teenager who I learned had been arrested on prostitution not a month ago. Yes, the US is full of uninsured homeless people with no jobs and no food, and we should ALL be working to fix this. The whole "Its not my fault" thing is a load of crap, sometimes its no ones fault. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a job when you can't take a shower? How hard it is to work when you're not eating? And as soon as you get that paycheck.. it goes to feeding your family and getting that shower that's going to help you keep your job for another week. The money is all gone before you know it and you're living day by day with no way out of it.

If you want to believe its a Myth.. then you're just ignorant.. lucky for you, that's a curable disease.

I've seen people who appear to be having an orgasm and some just in complete ecstasy over Obama's election victory, comparisons with Martin L King, the guy hasn't done anything he might be a load of rubbish, I'd like to ask what do his supporters on here expect of him?

Yes, this is exactly the kind of thing that people have been talking about. Everything's always so extreme, everything leaps to the most extreme conclusions imaginable. You're either for us or against us; people have to be either ferociously right-wing and believe that everyone outside the US is either a communist or a terrorist, or probably both, or you have to be "in complete ecstasy over Obama's election victory". B. Hussein Obama must be either the reincarnation of Martin Luther King, Gandhi and Jesus Christ, or he's a marxist who wants to impose communism on the USA, have tea and cakes with Mr. Bin Laden, and sell America out to the UN. Why do people have to go to such extremes all the time?

A classic example of just the kind of thing I was talking about one moment ago. If you don't like The American Way , go to live among all the commies in Yurrp.

There can be no criticising America , don't you know? What do you think this is? The land of free speech or something? Good heavens, whatever next.

America IS great. It's the land of opportunity. The government should provide a minimal role in peoples lives. Not this bloated bureaucratic mess that sits in DC.

Leave people alone to succeed and fail on their own. There are other countries to move to if you want to be spoon fed by a nanny-state government.

I would like to add my congratulations to the People of America. From an article I read...

It is not simply that we chose a communicator and scholar and a man who so clearly demonstrates family values through the love and respect he shows his wife and daughters, although those too are significant milestones. It is not simply that we chose, but also that we rejected.

We rejected smears and race-baiting and Muslim-baiting and desperation. We rejected so much history and so many rules that have bound us to the way things have been and are supposed to be. We rejected fear. Most importantly, we rejected fear.

Our better angels prevailed for one critical moment which can and will change forever the moments to follow. We said resoundingly that we are not afraid. We are not afraid of the world out there. We are not afraid of ourselves.

In rejecting that fear, we have shed something awful, at least for a time, and in so doing we have liberated ourselves. I am still crying, but they are tears of possibility for all that we are free to do and free to be.Yes, we did.

Not all that Obama promised (and the promise represented by the election of Obama) may happen, at least not quickly. But the American people have shown they believe it can happen, and that gives the rest of the World hope as well. Thank you.

Yes it's early days but i believe that America is ready to take it's place at the head of the table again. Obama will regain the respect and admiration that

Bush and his hawks squandered over the last 8 years. What a pleasure to see an articulite , intelligent President in waiting once again.

He brings all the excitement and anticipation that Kennedy generated back in the day. Let's just hope that the worst side of American politics doesn't come out and they dont try to kill him.

I was well impressed with his victory speech and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I didn't see him look at his speech even once, compare this to what he's taking over from ......they guy can't even pronounce some words let alone string them together.

I really hope that he can change not only America but the rest of the World for the better.......after all Bush has changed it for the worse.

Sorry if any Republicans are offended but that's just the way it is.\

I'm looking forward to seeing Obama take the reigns and get on with it........Once again Well done America, you have come through and shown the way once again.

Go Obama....

I just don't understand how Obama is the greatest thing already....God, he hasn't even started as president and they are hailing him like a King. Wait a minute, is the USA going to be a communist country now???? Seems to me like Obama really wants to make our decisions for us instead of us making them. If our country has another bad terrorist attack while he's in office, it'll go to show that certain peoples claims were right. That he was in cahoots with terrorists. After all, did you see the church he was attending and when it leaked out...he didn't go there????? Seriously, I hope he proves me wrong and makes this country better. By the way, for most of you out there....it was not Bush's fault 9/11 happened. If I were to point the finger, I'd point it at Clinton.

As if that isn't disrespectful.

No, it isn't disrespectful.

The upside down U.S. flag is an official signal of distress. It is not meant to be, and is not officially recognized as any type of disrespect when so displayed for the right reasons. To the contrary, here is the relevant part of the US Code of Laws regarding how to fly the flag when in distress:

THE FLAG CODE

Title 36, U.S.C., Chapter 10

As amended by P.L. 344, 94th Congress

Approved July 7, 1976

§ 176. Respect for flag: No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.

(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

source

Given that the President-elect has stated that he plans to redistribute my hard-earned money, flying the flag upside down is quite proper.

Do you even KNOW what that means?

An upside down flag? I think it means you're protesting out of feelings of stress for the nation? Now if that isn't correct, please correct. If it is however, the other party wins, so he protests feelings of stress for the nation?
