Given that the President-elect has stated that he plans to redistribute my hard-earned money, flying the flag upside down is quite proper.

So I was correct about it's meaning. I was also correct in saying that you're using the flag as a political tool to protest the people's decision to elect Obama. Perhaps I should fly the flag upside down because Proposition 8 and Amendment 2 passed.

An upside down flag? I think it means you're protesting out of feelings of stress for the nation? Now if that isn't correct, please correct. If it is however, the other party wins, so he protests feelings of stress for the nation?

This is very interesting. I knew there had to be a meaning on why the flag was upside down.

No, you were not correct. I am not protesting anything. I am merely stating that I consider my property to be in extreme danger. I am not protesting the democratic process.

Are you one of those people who think the country 'owes' you? Owes you a debt to protect your property simply because you have acquired it? Do you think all those who gave their lives or their health to defend your right to own your property, to defend the right for your country to elect Obama, owe you that sacrifice they made?

Or do you owe them?

Owe them the duty of respect, acknowledgement and to give of yourself when they and your country require it of you?

My finances are my property. When a presidential candidate very candidly answers a citizen and tells him, he wants to spread the wealth of those who have worked hard to earn it and give it to others, that tells me my property is potentially in peril.

No. The country doesn't owe me anything, but it also doesn't have the right to what is mine, to what I have worked and struggled to make.

This is asinine. Those people who died for, fought for, and served for (which although I was fortunate not to die, I did serve my country also) did so so that I can have the RIGHT to disagree and voice my disagreement. They served the country so that those who came after them would live in the security that no one would be able to decide for them what they could do with the fruits of their labor. Do they owe me something!? NO, I owe them and part of the way I HONOR their sacrifice is by voicing my disagreement!

I do give them the respect and acknowledgement. I was willing to give enough of myself that I VOLUNTARILY served my country, because as a first-generation American I felt it was the least I could do to show gratitude for the opportunity to live in a free country.

I'm the kind of American who willingly and proudly served my country, Leo. I'm the kind of American who EXERCISES the rights of Free Speech that so many fought hard for and died to insure I had! I am the kind of American who is not discouraging his teenage son from considering joining the military in this time of war. I'm the kind of American who tried to get back into the military after 9/11. I am the kind of American who would willingly die and kill to preserve the right of the American people to elect whoever they elect AND to voice their displeasure with the government!

That's the kind of American I am. If you don't like it too bad. We Americans are PROUD that we don't all have to line up and kiss the behind of those WE elect to SERVE us. I am the kind of American who remembers the President, the Congressmen and the Justices are my EMPLOYEES not my RULERS!

I don't see anything there about me giving up my money so the government can distribute it.

I gladly support many charitable organizations. I don't need to be forced to give up my money to help others and I resent the fact that anyone would equate socialism with patriotism.

This is getting stupid..

The right is already claiming Obama has destroyed the nation, even though hes not even in office yet.. Then claims the left is hailing him as a GOD... even through he hasn't done anything as president.

The right is swearing up and down there is NO WAY Obama can do the things he plans to do, even after admitting over and over again they don't know anything about him?

To top it off... they're whining and crying about how he shouldn't have been elected.. how the 52% where wrong, how someone must have done something to the votes, and, best yet, how 52% isn't enough to win. Heck I've heard Iraq sent in 500,000 Iraqis, made them citizens and had them pad the votes for Obama... yet they scoff at people who want to run Prop 8 again next year in the hope of a turn over.

The hypocrisy is getting way out of hand and I don't see a point to it anymore... OBAMA WON, deal with it. Nothing you say now is going to change it. Concede to your fate, whatever that might be, because the jaw wagging ain't gonna help you one bit. This is getting old, stale and tasteless.

This whole thing sounds kind of hypocritical to me. Approximately the same amount of people voted for Bush and the world hates ALL Americans for no good reason. Suddenly, we have a half black president and now we are all a-okay.

Anyone that judges me for whoever is in the White house can just bite me.

For 30 years I WORKED, sometimes 2 jobs, paid my taxes, raised my family, served my country for 20 years. Yeah. MINE.

Yes, he is just my employee. Not just mine though, he is the employee of the American people. When I said "He is my employee" I was speaking as an American citizen, not as Iamsson. So, although all public servants are my employees, they are not just my employee and as employees of the American people they have a duty to carry out their duties even if I personally disagree with them. Nice try ST.

See, you're falling into the same trap all those others did. Although I do not yet make $250K, I hope to make $250K at some point in the future. Additionally, according to Biden the number was more like $120K which I'm a little closer to. Stop thinking about how you are not affected so it's OK, because at some point you will be affected and it will be too late. We should all be raging whenever the government tells us what they plan to do with our money whether they are Republicans, Democrats, or whatever! It's our money!

Thing only thing you are voicing is your petulance, selfishness and churlishness. You do have the right to disagree, and obviously President-Elect Obama represents a different political philosophy to yours. However you, and others here who are already accusing Obama of destroying your country and the freedoms of your way of life are exercising the same 'freedom' of speech that Abu Hamza (look him up) exercised here in the UK.

You are hate-mongering, pure and simple.

There is a difference between exercising freedom of speech and showing disrespect, and by accusing Obama of being a danger to 'your property' by showing the American flag upside down (which is meant to warn of extreme danger to the Nation - not you as a person) without even allowing him the opportunity to show he can be the President he says he wants to be, you have crossed that line.

I wrote in a previous thread about how proud I was to see America conquer it's fear, especially that fear imprinted on the psyche by the events of 9/11. I can see now, however, that the fear runs too deep. The trauma for some was too much. You all had to realise you weren't impregnable in your nation fortress sometime. That all of us who live in what we call 'the Free World' are subject to tyranny even within our own borders. Dec 1941 brought that home to a Nation once, but there were already other nations embroiled in that conflict and the US (and the World) had just recovered from a Great Depression. The nation was more united and America reacted with honour and dignity. This time, it seems, the Nation is divided.

That you think others are saying you should kiss *** just shows how bitter you are. Your country is asking you to make a sacrifice in a time of need. This sacrifice won't be harsh and it may help a lot of people. You, as a Christian, should understand what this means. Yet you whine and complain.

I was proud to see my American friends reject fear.

I hope to remain proud.

Right, and can you guess why that is? Why they are not so easily committed anymore, despite the fact that they talk to boogers, crap themselves, and forget to eat for days at a time? Thank liberal lawyers and political activists in the ACLU that claimed people that were no danger to others were being illegally held against their rights. That's right, the hospitals were FORCED to release patients they could not prove were dangerous. These patients, on their anti-psychotic meds, testified too. So, they were released, and went off their meds, and began wandering the streets.

Maybe you should look this stuff up. It's pretty bizarre, but also true. This was a huge problem in NYC (i think in the 80's) and the homeless population SKYROCKETED over a few weeks period.

Few homeless or mentally ill remain in prison for longer than it takes to get medical care, a few hot meals, and maybe some clothes.

Oh, lots of things. Common sense being amongst the first. I tend to think patriotism is largely (though not completely) silly. Historically speaking, its value is in direct proportion to how many people it can be used to successfully deliver propaganda to, so you should always c*** an eye at whoever invokes it. I mean, the Nazis were intensely patriotic people...

I don't know about that... I'd say (based on the Constitution and the Federalist Papers) he's the American people's employee and in suggesting that either you perfectly represent the will of all people or that you have some personal presidential oversight, you've just arrogated a great deal of unearned authority to yourself with that statement.

Bush did give us 8 years to formulate a fairly good opinion of him. In 8 years we will have a better understanding of Obama and if he pulls a "Bush" I'll be right here saying so.
