Binge-drinking row over 1500 students who went on mass 'Carnage' pub crawl half-naked and covered in obscenities

ages that prove the true extent of Britain's binge-drinking culture as a staggering 1,500 students - many scantily-clad - embarked on a drunken city centre bar crawl.

With profanities scrawled across their faces and arms in marker pens, the University of East Anglia students who took part in last night's pub crawl around Norwich have been criticised for fuelling binge drinking.

The drunken students visited five pubs and two clubs as part of the fancy dress event themed 'dirty porn stars', before spilling out onto pavements, yelling obscenities and taking part in raucous drinking games.

Police issued several warnings over binge drinking ahead of the night which sparked concerns from the local council and licensing authorities.

And while police reported a relatively trouble-free night, some students said they were disappointed that the event was not rowdy enough.

One student Josh Collins, 18, told the Norwich Evening News: 'We probably wouldn't have gone to so many places tonight if we hadn't been on this pub crawl.

'I'm a bit disappointed - I was expecting more carnage.'

But 20-year-old student Stuart Marrison, who admitted to being quite drunk said: 'It's been a right laugh. I would say it encourages binge drinking but not in a bad way.'

Carnage UK has been held in university towns and cities for the last five years, but has proved controversial with critics claiming it promotes excessive alcohol consumption.

The event has sparked such uproar that some of the events have been cancelled across the country.

Last month a planned Carnage event in Blackpool, which was expected to attract 3,000 revellers, was canned following objections from police and the council.

During last night's event one girl, wearing a white low-cut vest had 'Essex s**t' and 'Nice p***y' scribbled across her arm.

Another has graffiti sprawled all across his shirt and drawings of genitalia scribbled across his face.

Posing happily for photos, a group of male students are pictured with an inflatable blow-up doll.

One girl was so drunk she passed out on top of a bollard. Another student stripped down to only a thong and t-shirt with profanities scrawled across his bottom.

But Steve Hughes, marketing manager for Varsity Leisure Group, owners of the Carnage brand defended the event and denied it encouraged binge drinking.

'People buy t-shirts with six tasks to tick off, such as "snog a random student" or "pose like a porn star", but none of the tasks are drink related,' he said.

'We've operated these events in more than 35 cities over five years and have had very positive feedback that they are very well-run.

'We're not encouraging binge drinking. If we were, we would have the buying power to negotiate big discounts but the volumes of alcohol sold on our events are far less than on a normal night.'

As part of the night participants paid £10 for a T-shirt that got them free entry to organised venues.

Bert Bremner, city council member for community safety as well as city licensees and the UEA students' union said there were concerns about the crawl.

He told a local newspaper: 'It sounds like a stunning number and I don't know how pubs would manage that, it could be an incredible disturbance to residents.

'Any possibility of binge drinking would worry me when we are trying to develop a theme of safer drinking for Norwich and a much more controlled drinking atmosphere.'

But despite initial fears police said they were happy with the general behaviour of the crowd.

Inspector Michelle Lillie said that only one arrest had been made for drunk and disorderly behaviour.

She told Mail Online that the lack of drink promotion and happy hour had meant the Norwich event was smoother than those than had taken place in other areas of the UK.

She added the crowd was noisy and that police had encouraged premises not to offer drink specials that would promote binge drinking.

'The no drink promotion had encouraged people not to drink to excess and that was certainly something we were trying to hammer home,' she said.

'They are students so yes the crowd was rowdy and noisy but they were well behaved most of the time.

Why the HELL didn't anybody call me i would of been straight up

Now people of the um world is this kinda thing acceptable? young scantily dressed college students parading around in this manner?

Before anyone asks "What has this to do about the paranormal". Just take a look...;

That black guy is clearly a ghost!

---

Also, it seems it's only conservative/upper class/old people. Who complain about binge drinking. So long as it's kept under control - aka, having police around to ensure no one gets glassed. Then it's all fine.

Looked a fun party~

 Maybe she's just fat?

But still, she doesn't look drunk. Just 'cause she's with her friends who're pretty out of it, doesn't mean she's an idiot and also drank.

Am up for most things, but this sort of thing i don't like. it does my head in when people make an ar$e of themselves through drink. while am on a bit of a rant, i hate it when your in the pub and the drunk comes over giving you the thumbs up and wanting to shake hands. I think am ready for the pipe and slippers. :o

I like getting drunks - if they ever come over to your table - to just buy you another drink or buy you some crisps.

Me and friends got this guy - who was hitting on some chick a friend brought with him - to buy us all a pizza. But, the chick was kinda-of a ****, and left with him sometime later. -Shrug-.

Either that or they just fancied the idea of a BLACK MAN to get it out of their system :hmm::yes:

Too right, it has everything to do with paranormal mysteries. :tu: here's one for the skeptics.

ahem...(skeptic's voice)

While, not taking a leap of faith, or making a wild assumption..as one cannot see the subject's face, but the description based upon observation, does indeed appear to be accurate.

I agree with you.

It's okay to go out with some friends to get a bite to eat and have a drink or two, but to drink excessively and then get plastered and act like morons is just stupid and brain dead in my opinion.

If you need to get drunk to have fun then you must be really boring people when you are sober lol.

I don't drink anyway, it is one of the reasons that caused my parents to divorce, because my dad was a alcoholic, he did do a good job of cutting back on drinking for awhile but has just recently begun to slip back into the bad habit of drinking until he is plastered.
