If I were leading either nationand realized that war was imminent, I would launch a ground attack in conjunction with a nuke attack deeper in to the heartland of the enemy. This would cause mass confusion and break up thier lines of communication. Of course, it would also lead to an all out war with various alliances being called in, making it an even bigger mess.

India and Pakistan have each approximately the same amount of nukes. If they use all of their to hit the land of the adversary, then they would receive an adequate retaliative strike. It is the same as it was between USA and USSR, before striking the enemy each had to strike enemy's silos with missiles. In their local mini arm race, India has a fraction more and Pakistan follows it and builds more when India builds more, so maybe this is the chance for them not to use the nukes at all... However given the sensitivity of Chinese oil imports, China can strike India if it attacks Pakistan, hard to predict anything.

This was brought up on another forum and someone mentioned that with the current winds most of the fallout would hit India and China, so don't think we'll see any birds flying.

Also seems Pakistan has stated that if things keep getting worst they're going to shift their forces away from Afghanistan to the Indian border. So there's motivation for the terrorists to carry out these attacks. Gets the Pakistan army off their backs.

There hardly can be a non-nuclear war between two nuclear powers, if even they both start to avoid it. Sooner or later one side would start to take over, and the loser uses the nukes. But they also can start with a strike, we'll see soon...

...and the holy land of the two towers will burn to ashes and fall...the followers of light and dark will arise to fight back...the sun's glare will burn a thousand times bright and destroy all that once was....It has begun...

Now that I think about it, that makes perfect sence. I heard on the news this afternoon that the only surviving attacker has told Indian authorities that his group had been trained by the Pakistani Navy. I would give the odds of that being the truth as slim to none and slim's outta town.

Is it how you see this? Not resonates with me, sorry - I simply do not give a sixpence for what would happen with the forces, be they of dark or light. I live my own life and I do not bomb anyone to live it, simply no need. When I was talking about a war between two nuclear countries - this was what I was taught during my military course, no more. I am out of politics completely.

I was wondering about this...

Mumbai attacks: Terrorists took cocaine to stay awake during assault

Officials said drug paraphernalia, including syringes, was recovered from the scene of the attacks, which killed almost 200 people.

The heavily built men, who had undergone training at a special marine camp established by the Lashkar-e-Taibat (LeT) terrorist group in Pakistan, had also used steroids to build a tougher physique.

"We found injections containing traces of cocaine and LSD left behind by the terrorists and later found drugs in their blood," said one official.

"There was also evidence of steroids, which isn't uncommon in terrorists.

"These men were all toned, suggesting they had been doing some heavy training for the attacks. This explains why they managed to battle the commandos for over 50 hours with no food or sleep."

One terrorist used the drugs to keep on fighting despite suffering a life-threatening injury.

Mumbai attacks: Jews tortured before being executed during hostage crisis

Jewish victims made up a disproportionate number of the foreigners killed after 10 Muslim fanatics stormed a series of sites in the Indian financial capital.

Members of the beleaguered Jewish community in Mumbai gathered at a crumbling synagogue for a memorial for Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka, who ran the cultural centre targeted by the Deccan Mujahideen.

The couple's son, Moshe survived after his nanny, Sandra Samuel escaped with him in her arms 10 hours after the hostage incident started. The child cried "Ima" and "Dada," or mummy and daddy, as the service began.

Moshe's grandparents have arrived from Israel to take the orphaned boy home and there is intense pressure to grant Miss Samuel a visa by declaring her righteous among the gentiles.

Two countries have posted officials at the JJ Hospital morgue but there are at least twice as many Israeli disaster specialists as British consuls representing the former colonial power.

Israeli officials confirmed six Jews were dead but the figure is likely to rise to eight. The total number of foreigners killed in the attacks stands at 22.

Well, of course I hope they have the sense to navigate this better than I do! LOL! Besides, what I was talking about was if I knew tht war was a certainty and there was no avoiding it.

Also, there are different type of nuclear weapons. Some make more of a mess than others. Not to mention their manner of use has differeing effects. Air bursts have a wider spread of damage but, grund bursts through up more radioactive dust.

If they were to use Hiroshima class weapons, which is most likely where they are, technologically speaking, those nukes would not have as bad of a long term after effect as some of the stuff the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. built. Also, if they use cobalt sphere warheads, they give off a radioactive gas that is long lived and highly toxic. If they don't, then small Hiroshima types of nuke would be far more manageable in a localized conflict.

In an all out p***ing contest between the two, I don't see why one would not be willing to hit the big red button if they thought that the fight was lost. It was a standard plan for the U.S. and the Soviets back in the Cold War too. If the conventional ground forces started to lose, we would have stepped up to tactical nukes, and then the other side would have used something bigger. It would most likely not have gone the way it wsa depicted in the movies like "The Day After" or "The Eighth Day". It would have been slowly ramped up to a full strike.

In the case of India and Pakistan, I don't see there being a whole lot of steps available to them. Not only that, they are not fighting over some far flung allies in a different part of the world, they are fighting on their doorsteps. the use of force will have to go to a higher level a lot faster and I predict tht if they do get into a full on conventional war, they will be tossing nukes with in a few days anyway. Unless cooler heads prevail, that is.

The big question to me is, rather this will turn violent or not. Although both nations have a lot of bad feelings toward each other, they also have a history of being aboe to back away with honour too! LOL! Although I do feel that one of them could get the upper hand and win a fight using nukes, it would be no bed of roses afterwards for the region after the fact. There would also be a long time of hatred from the losing party who would forever have annomosity against the winner for "Nuking my grandfathers!".

I don't think that either party will go nuclear right off the bat though. The world community simply wouldn't stand for it. The first country to use them would be ostrasized for generations to come. Of course, if one side gets to the point where they KNOW they are not going to win and that there is no diplomatic solution, I can see them upping the ante with few small tactical uses. This would engender world outrage but, might serve to bring the other guys to the table.

In the attack plan that I laid out above, the war would be brief, bloody and decisive but, would make the nation a pariah but, none the less, a pariah that survives.

How would LSD(acid) be used to fight or train?

Unless of course these terrorists were under some mind control program just doesn't make sense.

This has to be kept as an open possibility. It is quite a strange terrorist attack, so maybe they really had electrodes implanted to the brains and given LSD for them to act like zombies while their minds are bathing in illusions.

From "ACT for America":

"Once again we have witnessed an Islamic terrorist attack incited and justified through appeals to Islam by its perpetrators. On one level it is understandable why so many in the West are unwilling or unable to connect the militant ideology of political Islam to the thousands of Islamic terror attacks that have been committed worldwide since 9/11. We extol the virtues of tolerance and pluralism and believe others in the world do so as well, so it is easy to dismiss such attacks as the work of a few “extremists,” rather than the product of adherence to an ideology.

The fatal flaw in this thinking is this: How can we successfully win a war on Islamic terrorism if we don’t correctly define the threat doctrine that motivates its adherents?

It is argued that most of the world’s Muslims are not terrorists. While true, this fact is irrelevant. Most of the world’s Muslims have never read the Qur’an or the Hadith in a language they can understand. They have not read the hundreds of passages that call for jihad against infidels, nor do they renounce such passages. They do not organize en masse to denounce the terrorist acts perpetrated by other Muslims in the name of Islam, nor do they denounce the frequent exhortations to world subjugation found in the holy books of Islam.

Yes, there are Muslims who have denounced the Mumbai attacks. But examine their denunciations closely and you will be hard-pressed to find renunciations of the supremacist doctrine of political Islam -- the foundation for jihad -- which emanates from its holy books. This is the justification commonly cited by terrorists for their actions. We in the West must come to grips with the uncomfortable fact that terrorism is a symptom of this militant, supremacist ideology. Terrorism is a means to an end, not an end in itself. And it is but one of many means used by those who are devoted to the supremacist ideology of political Islam."

What are its short-term effects?

The effects of LSD are unpredictable. They depend on the amount taken, the user's personality, mood, and expectations, and the surroundings in which the drug is used. The physical effects include dilated pupils, higher body temperature, increased heart rate and blood pressure, sweating, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, dry mouth, and tremors. Sensations and feelings change much more dramatically than the physical signs. The user may feel several different emotions at once or swing rapidly from one emotion to another. If taken in a large enough dose, the drug produces delusions and visual hallucinations. The user's sense of time and self changes.Sensations may seem to "cross over," giving the user the feeling of hearing colors and seeing sounds. These changes can be frightening and can cause panic.

O.K., so I am a Star Trek geek....

There was an episode of Star Trek, The Next Gernation, (Encounter at Parpoint), where they mentioned that there was a time in the late 21st century where Earth armies used drugs to control their soldiers.

I know that this has nothing to do with the topic at hand but, I thought that it would be fun to mention it anyway.

Besides, it was well known in the 1990's that hte Mogadishu militias often gave their troops "Kot", a leaf that is chewed to get them high and make them more aggressive. Although keeping an army stoned has been tried by many over history, I don't know of any cases where it really benefitted the amies in the long run.

In the U.S. military, one can get a dishonerable discharge for failing a drug screening, also called the "Whiz Quiz", (as in taking a whiz).

Fun food for thought!
