In this laboratory, the successful isolation, cultivation and characterization of a facultative aerobic magnetic bacterium, Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1, has enabled us to conduct genetic manipulations to elucidate the mechanism of BMP formation as well as to study the useful applications of BMPs to the biotechnology field. Recently, we have also succeeded in the isolation and characterization of a sulfate-reducing magnetic bacterium, Desulfovibrio magneticus RS-1, which grows and synthesizes BMPs only under strict anaerobic conditions. The following introduction summarizes our recent genetic and protein analyses related to the biomineralization of magnetite and the potential applications of BMPs.

I don't doubt that there could be magnetite-containing cells in people, however we do not seem to have any propensity to follow magnetic fields.

I DO know it has nothing to do with dowsing, because dowsing is bunk. All studies show it to be no better than chance. Just like all other so called "paranormal" "powers".

^_^ Who knows these magnetic properties may have other organic benefits.. to how the body functions.. it may by a power source.. there are many studies how judicially applying magnets to various parts of the body helps it heal faster.. so maybe these magnets help power up the magnetic fuel sources in the body...

Also there are many stories at how some meridian points.. ley lines .. are supposed to boost our energy fields.. help us heal..

I don't believe in dousing. I've seen too many people fail and too many "studies" on television showing people fail. But back to these crystals...

if there are magnetic crystals in the brain, why aren't they ripped out during an MRI?

That's precisely what i was wondering.

Hmmm, I would recommend everyone get tested early for metal toxicity as many harmful / consumable metals are easily absorbed into the bloodstream (some even through vapor, yeah...you can actually breathe them in and not realize it). Once these metals cross the blood/brain barrier, it takes a very long time for them to eventually make their way out, some never do and go on to cause many side effects.

Seems like this magnetic bacteria can be found in either fresh or salt water sources near the equator.. http://aem.asm.org/content/71/8/4902.full Would an abundance of these organisms lead to an iron deficiency ? Would it be healthy to bathe in these waters ?

Magnetite biomineralization in the human brain

http://www.pnas.org/content/89/16/7683.abstract

Magnetic particle extracts from solubilized brain tissues examined with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction, and elemental analyses identify minerals in the magnetite-maghemite family, with many of the crystal morphologies and structures resembling strongly those precipitated by magnetotactic bacteria and fish. These magnetic and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements imply the presence of a minimum of 5 million single-domain crystals per gram for most tissues in the brain and greater than 100 million crystals per gram for pia and dura.
Samples of magnetotactic bacteria were collected from brackish water in the wonderfully named Death Valley Park in California. While many different types of magnetic bacteria were found, the rod-shaped ones were by far the dominant group. Having isolated a sample of exclusively rod-shaped bacteria, researchers could then examine the physical properties. All of the bacteria had a flagellum, a single little ‘tail’ used for propulsion. They contained different forms of the internal magnetic nanoparticles as well; some of the nanoparticles were made up of magnetite (Fe3O4 – iron and oxygen complex) and some made up of greigite (Fe3S4 – iron and sulfur complex). The greigite nanoparticles were a range of different shapes while the magnetite crystals formed bullet shaped particles. http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/lab-rat/2011/12/23/new-magnetic-bacteria/
The 38-year-old geobiologist said he believed that magnetite crystals enabled animals from bees to whales to navigate by using the earth's magnetic field. He said he doubted that they supported any sensory capability in humans, although he suspected that they might account for the possible influence of strong electromagnetic fields on human health.

What a brilliant topic!! Did you know these crystals are pyramid shaped? There has been a study on these crystals for thirty years - biomagnetism and bio-electric magnetism - the foundation of life. It is definitely worth a google. I think their is a strong link to the crystals found in the brain and the pineal gland. Could the calcification of our pineal gland in early youth explain why we can no longer find a use for these crystals? Or no longer know how to use our brain to its fullest potential? Let me know what you think of this - http://www.affs.org/html/biomagnetism.html

No I didn't "know" that because it is actually Octahedral...

How rude! I thought this was a conversation of descent human beings, but just to quote a man that has studied this for twenty years, no they are not in fact Octahedral, not in this case, I will be more specific - they are cubo-octahedral actually dear,

They arent ripped out of your head because Magnetite (Fe3O4) is ferrimagnetic not ferromagnetic, so the magnetic moment is somewhat smaller than in iron, but tyically these particles are smaller (<100nm) than a Weiss domain, so they are not permanently magnetized by magnetic fields, that's why they are called super-paramagnets. Forces on magnetic particles are only present in a magnetic field GRADIENT (hence not so much in the homogeneous center of an MRI magnet, but mainly when entering/leaving the magnet). This is why such superparamagnetic particles are used to remove stuff from liquids which somehow binds to them.

As they ingest the iron, the microbes create tiny magnets inside themselves, similar to those in PC hard drives.

The research may lead to the creation of much faster hard drives, the team of scientists say.

The study appears in the journal Small.

As technology progresses and computer components get smaller and smaller, it becomes harder to produce electronics on a nano-scale.

So researchers are now turning to nature - and getting microbes involved.

Magnetic bacteria

In the current study, the scientists used the bacterium Magnetospirilllum magneticum.

These naturally magnetic microorganisms usually live in aquatic environments such as ponds and lakes, below the surface where oxygen is scarce.

We are quickly reaching the limits of traditional electronic manufacturing as computer components get smaller... Nature has provided us with the perfect tool to [deal with] this problem Dr Sarah Staniland, University of Leeds

They swim following the Earth's magnetic field lines, aligning in the magnetic field like compass needles, in search of preferred oxygen concentrations.

When the bacteria ingest iron, proteins inside their bodies interact with it to produce tiny crystals of the mineral magnetite, the most magnetic mineral on Eart

Magnetite makes for a relatively weak magnet by today's standards. But since the earth's naturally occurring magnetic field was far higher in the past (2 to 3 gauss as opposed to 1/2 gauss today), magnetite crystals may have been stronger at one point in time. Still, this is a weak field by today's standards as one can easily buy a magnet with an internal gauss strength of 10,000 (1 tesla) or more. Such high exposures do not appear in any way detrimental; at worst, they seem harmless and at best they appear to help a variety of conditions.
Exposure to the earth's magnetic field plays an essential role in our health, a fact clearly demonstrated when the first astronauts returned to earth sick. Their illness was soon attributed to a lack of magnetism in outer space and the problem was subsequently resolved when NASA placed magnets in their space suits and spaceships.
It has since been discovered that in the absence of a magnetic field, the energy level of atoms diminishes. Necessary nutrients become depolarized and unusable. If this condition is permitted to continue, the body can become imbalanced and function improperly. By restoring balance to an organism, biomagnetic therapy can alleviate a
number of health conditions. Some of the most common applications of magnets are described below   http://www.sld.cu/galerias/pdf/sitios/rehabilitacion-fis/biomagnetic_healing..pdf
