President of the United States Barack Obama has received a mixed reaction to a proposal to ban space based weapons.

"US President Barack Obama's recent pledge to seek a ban on space weapons drew a mixed reaction from experts in the field, with some saying the president might be better off pursuing something more modest and less complex, such as a set of international rules governing space operations.

Arms control advocates nonetheless applauded the statement as a welcome departure from the space policy stance of former President George W. Bush, who rejected the notion of banning or limiting space weapons via treaty arrangements."

Apparently, that could mean less funding for scientists thus those lacking of great brains could not resort to making a team and their research will sure fail.

I think this would a better start to seek the true SCIENTISTS of today.

When the aliens come, what are we gonna use to fight them???!!

A board with a nail in it! And one day...we'll make a board with a nail so big...we'll destroy ourselves. :D

I don't care what the reason is that he wants to cancel it, it's wrong. We need space weapons, what about astroids? It's just common sense. I'm sure there is life on other planets and I'm sure they are not all friendly. I don't know if we have been visited, I think we probably have but I've never seen anything conclusive but that doesn't mean they aren't here or haven't been here. If he has a problem with it then don't let him have the button! Of course there would have to be absolute rules never to use it on Earth or point it at another planet but that almost goes without saying. It would just be dumb not to have space weapons.

Extraterrestrial threats aside, space weapons are needed to prevent high altitude missiles from hitting our country.

Definitely. And what the heck is a "space weapon?' The full article tries to lump the AEGIS shooting down the falling satellite as a space weapon -- the satelitte could have caused an environmental hazard if not intercepted. Are defensive weapons designed against threat ICBMs is a space weapon?

(Note: Space-based interceptors were PLANNED under the Reagan Star Wars plan, but not deployed as part of the U.S. Missile Defence program)

And I remember my physics, all you need to shoot down a satellite is to launch another one in it's path. Demolition derby in orbit.

this is most likely bullsh*t but alot of people have come forward from NASA over the years and have said every time they try to test some kind of bomb in space a UFO shuts it down.

once again most likely bullsh*t but America has been trying to test a Nuclear bomb out in space (mainly on the moon) but every time they try it fails because of something unknown

I wonder what that would look like from Earth...or rather what the effects would be since it is a vacuum. I would think the intensity would be magnified, but who knows. With our luck they'd detonate too close and knock out a lot of satellites. Do you think the Earth would be affected since nukes are more efficient when detonated above their target area?

Way too far away from the earth if a Nuke was detonated upon the moon or right above, the moon is too huge and the Kiloton Yield would be a bee fart on a Mountain, way too wee to be knocking Moon out of Earth Orbit although in Actuality the Moon is slowly drifting away from Earth, further away. However if a Planetoid or say if the fragment was of another Planet Exploding apart, and careened into the Moon, that would have a far more Greater Effect upon the Moon and if the Earth’s Moon was destroyed of Violently thrown out of Earth orbit, Everything the Resulting effects upon Earth would be Chaotic and disastrous to say the Least, but then so would an Earth Polar Flip. A Nuke upon the Moon surface wouldn’t even do it…All Based upon my own opinion and with no Scientific Date to Back my Opinion …

Nothing either way. Any Extraterrestrial society with the technology to mass instant travel to another planet lightyears away would also have the technology to be able to stomp us flat.

It's a fifty fifty bet.

As long as Jeff Goldblum is still alive, though, we can just strap him in with Will Smith and a outdated laptop into the secret alien craft and send them to the aliens mothership and he can load a Windows virus into whatever equivalent system to Linux the Aliens have and save us all!

Or we can just launch Chuck Norris at them.

would space weapons be lasers? i only ask because i remember reading something in a newspaper a couple of months ago about america having a working laser weapon. they were going to publicly test it by blowing up a plane or something big to show what the bad boy can do. mind you ive not heard anything about it since...

America isn't trying to test nuclear weapons in space, and hasn't tried since at least the early 1960's. Doing so would be a gross violation of our treaty obligations.

To quote Scarface, whoever is giving you your information is taking you for a long ride.

Do we really believe that the Russians and Chinese are not working on the development of space weapons?

China has already tested one
