RIYADH (Reuters) - A suspected Muslim militant and a Saudi policeman have been killed in a shoot out in the Saudi capital Riyadh in which four policemen were also wounded.

Saudi Arabia is battling a surge in militant violence linked to Saudi-born Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.

An Interior Ministry statement read out on state television said the firefight broke out after the police stopped a suspicious car with two men on board.

The men shot at the police and then took off, coming to a stop in front of a house in the Faiha area in eastern Riyadh were more militants started using various weapons against the security forces, including rocket propelled grenades.

The statement said police were still surrounding the neighbourhood, which security sources earlier identified Rawabi.

Last Monday police killed a wanted man and injured another in a shootout in the capital.

Police have launched a manhunt for wanted militants after suicide bombings blamed on al Qaeda killed more than 50 people in Riyadh last year.
