Postmen 'threatened with sack' for refusing to deliver BNP leaflets

Dozens of postal workers are refusing to deliver British National Party election leaflets because they do not want to promote its right-wing 'rubbish', it emerged today.

Around 100 workers in the West Country have told union leaders they will not carry the leaflets, which bear an anti-immigration message.

They have accused Royal Mail bosses in Bristol and Somerset of 'bullying' over delivering material with one office allegedly threatening workers with the sack if they do not comply.

The Communication Workers Union claims Royal Mail is breaking a 'conscience clause' agreed four years ago which allows staff to refuse to deliver literature they find offensive.

Dave Wilshire, spokesman for the Bristol and District Branch of the CWU, said today: 'Over the past 48 hours I've had around 32 calls from individual members and those speaking on behalf of groups, saying they don't want to deliver the material.

'That is fair enough. We have a national agreement, known as the 'conscience clause', between the union and the Royal Mail. The clause says members don't have to deliver material if they feel threatened or if it is against their personal beliefs.

'In Bristol we have the St Paul's area which has a very high density of those from ethnic backgrounds. Anyone being expected to post BNP stuff through there is going to feel at risk.

'What's happening is that managers in Bristol are effectively bullying people. Someone from Thornbury said to me, 'if we don't deliver it we will get the sack'.

'That is outrageous.'

He estimated that around 100 people in the region were refusing or protesting at the leaflet delivery.

One postal worker, who has a round in the Fishponds area of Bristol, said the route bordered two ethnic minority areas and it was 'concerning' to be made to drop off inflammatory material.

He told the Western Daily Press: 'We are being forced by management to give out the BNP material even though it's against my beliefs - everyone knows what they stand for.

'We are being made to dish out this rubbish. I've read the BNP literature and although there isn't anything racist or fascist on it, it does say 'No to immigration''.

Workers were asked to start delivering the material this week ahead of the European elections next month.

BNP spokesman Simon Darby said today: 'We have a contract with the Royal Mail to deliver some 29 million BNP leaflets.

Some will be binned by Labour--supporting postmen who want to corrupt the democratic process, but it is a question of cutting that down.

'People will make up their own minds about the Communication Workers Union telling people what to do. This is the sort of thing that is happening in Zimbabwe.

'The Royal Mail have been quite good - if some of their workers don't want to deliver our leaflets, other postmen who are more professional can do it as overtime.'

A Royal Mail spokesperson said today: 'Where possible we will try to be flexible and sensitive to individual personal circumstances or beliefs.

'However, we need to balance this with Royal Mail's legal obligations under the Representation of People Act, to deliver election material.'

Presumably they knew, when applying for their positions that even the BNP use Royal Mail, who would be in a very sticky position if they were to discriminate against certain organisations etc. They have two options... suck it up, or change careers.

Facts are the BNP are a legitimate political party playing by the rules. The Postmen should just deliver the leaflets. I would like to think the Great British electorate are cleverer enough not to be persuaded by BNP propaganda leaflets.

mail is mail ... the only thing required is the worker deliver it ... he was not hired for his opinion of it.

this is like Pharmacists here in the states refusing to give out birth control and what not on 'religious beliefs' ... your job is to fill a prescription not to refuse to because of your personal beliefs. Can't do the job ? find a new one .
