Hamas has foiled an attempt by Palestinian militants to attack former U.S. president Jimmy Carter during his visit to the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian source told news agencies on Tuesday.

According to the source, militants linked with Al-Qaida planted two roadside bombs at a border crossing between Gaza and Israel with the intent of striking Carter's vehicle on his way out of the coastal territory.Witnesses reported seeing Hamas forces patrolling near the Erez crossing and detonating the explosives.

Ah, it's nice to know that the biggest failure in U.S. Presidential history has a special place in the hearts of a terrorist organization.

I guess on the good side, this could be a sign that there may be a rift developing in the united anti-good people front if the Hamas Terrorists are foiling plans hatched by the Anti-good people Al Qaeda terrorists.

Taft received jibes about his weight throughout his life: as Governor-General of the Philippines, Taft once sent a telegram to Washington, D.C. that read, "Went on a horse ride today; feeling good;" Secretary of War Elihu Root replied, "How's the horse?"

He did have a stated proposal to further world peace, the man wasn't all bad. He just wasn't much of anything.

LOL, it's no surprise Hamas would protect Carter; he's by far the most anti-Israeli, pro-Palestinian President the US has ever seen.

Yeah, that Carter/Clinton manner of dealing with attacks on the U.S. and our people was sooooooo much better than the way Bush handled it. I mean, fighting back! OMG! How dare he! Who did that Bush guy think he was anyway? A President of the United States or something?

...it's no surprise Hamas would protect Carter; he's by far the most anti-Israeli, pro-Palestinian President the US has ever seen.
Which is why the Left loves him so. While in office he did absolutely nothing that benefitted the United States in any way at all. If he had ever so much as seen a plan to help the American worker or ou failing industries, he would have thrown a stick at it and ran away.

It's quite ironic how Carter seems to be all about helping the Gazans, when the reason they suffer so much -- Hamas -- is because he betrayed the Shah and gave us the fanatical Ayatollahs, who fund, arm and support (in other words, control) Hamas.

I'm sure the dozens of Fatah-supporters in Gaza whose knees were shot with guns supplied by Iran are very appreciative of Carter's assistance.

You mean for your record.

Bush - 2 Term President

Carter - 1 term President, lost on a landslide on his reelection bid.

Go figure.

Quit unbelievable really how Carter assume the country should listen to him now after his failure as President.

If you mean he was the President (so far) who was least likely to be completely biased towards the Israeli position on any matter, then you are absolutely correct. :tu:

Maybe because, to the contrary of other former Prezz, he actually does some good around the world...like building homes for the poor, instead of bothering an audience with a fastidious radio show? Or running around given speeches at $50.000 an hour?

Okay, so with the time coming up to Two O' Clock, time for a news summary.

Un-named source of unknown credibility claims that Hamas defused/destroyed a bomb intended for Carter, placed at a Gaza/Israel border crossing point that was curiously lacking any presence from the Israeli defence forces. (there must be just LOADS of such crossing points... :P )

Named, accredited senior HAMAS official goes on record to say that he is unaware of any such event.

Meanwhile, in European news...

Cat rumoured to have cast doubts on veracity of story found on UM forum. Saruman was unavailable for comment.

Carter is a good man, but he should stay out of Politics for that is his biggest failure in his life.

He should just be like Mother Theresa.

And that being in the middle position resulted in his failure as a President.

You can't lead that way, a leader determines and stand by for what he thinks is right.

So, in a nutshell, you either fail in politics or as a person.

Another way of confirming that old saying: Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I think Carter is being fooled and screwed by Hamas making him think they are protecting him, poor old man.

When you get yourself in a position wherein you are dealing with the Lunatics of the world you simply cant treat them as nicely as you can expecting them to treat you back the same way.

On domestic issues, he simply made the wrong policies specially his economic policy in which for some unbelievable reason Obama seem to be giving another try.

from another article.

Following Carter's entry to Gaza, five men, some wearing Hamas police uniforms, removed three large, black disks and some wire from a sand dune next to a road Carter had used.

A uniformed officer at the scene told The Associated Press that the items were explosives, but police spokesman Islam Shahwan later said that an explosives unit had found nothing.

Israeli security officials said soldiers in a lookout post spotted Hamas forces dismantling explosives. They said they passed on a warning to Carter's security detail.

The Israeli officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing classified information.

A Hamas security source meanwhile said Israel briefly closed the Erez crossing point Tuesday after explosives were found near the Palestinian side of the crossing, shortly after Carter entered Gaza.

Ha’aretz, an Israeli newspaper, reported "A Hamas security source meanwhile said Israel briefly closed the Erez crossing point Tuesday after explosives were found near the Palestinian side of the crossing, shortly after Carter entered Gaza. The source said "the explosives were found on the route that Carter had passed when he entered Gaza this morning." Carter was due to leave Gaza using the same road later Tuesday afternoon.'"

The Jerusalem Post reported "Israeli security sources said that the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) had learned of plans to target Carter and had passed on the information to the former president's security detail in "real time."

another

Israeli security sources also said that the Shin Bet, the Israel security agency, had learned of plans to target Mr. Carter and had passed on the information to the former president's security detail in "real time."

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/world/story.html?id=1703012

hamas security source and israeli security sources seem to be the ones providing the information.

and there seems to have been a presence of israeli forces, right where they were supposed to be, on their side of the border. although i think you may have been referring to their presence when the bomb was initially being planted - which is a valid question.

Named, accredited senior HAMAS official goes on record to say that he is unaware of any such event.

in my opinion an attempted assasination on an ex american president in their territory isn't really something they would want to broadcast considering the man is trying to help them.. and america right now looks as though they are in favour of sorting out the situation there.

not exactly good publicity.

in saying that, of course you could be correct. the same as any sources could be lying about any event, anywhere in the world.
