It's legal for 16 year-olds to strip

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Teen strippers, 16 and 17 year-olds are taking off their clothes for money.

In Rhode Island minors can legally dance at gentlemen's clubs. But now, there is a push to close that loophole.

After reading through the state law on exploitation for commercial use we found discovered there is nothing prohibiting teens from stripping. One local group says if lawmakers don't act now more young people could become victims of sexual abuse.

Police learned a 16-year-old runaway was working as a stripper at Cheaters Gentlemen's Club in Providence.

It's interesting that the men going to clubs to watch a 16 yo strip, in person; would be arrested for child pornography if they were found with naked pictures of her on their computer..... and that the people allowed in the club as customers have to be at least 18 (juice bar) or more likely 21 (serving alcohol).

It's amazing the discrepancies between laws. I'm glad they've found the loophole and someone's now working to close it.

If you're not considered a legal adult until 18, there's no reason you should be allowed to take off your clothes for money until then. After that, well, whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Stripping doesn't lead to sexual abuse. :hmm:

The problem came to light after police learned a 16-year-old runaway was working as a stripper at Cheaters Gentlemen's Club in Providence.

Because we all know that a runaway shouldn't be holding a steady job but be doing meth in an alley and selling her body to drug dealers to pay for more meth. Duh!

Honestly don't see what the big deal is. 16 is a mature age and it is their body.

You know, it's so heartbreaking to see these kids become strippers just to survive. A lot of these kids are lost and need guidance. They can be something much, much better if only they aren't so stubborn and/or if only they have somebody to care and love and guide them.

I've actually talked to some strippers in the past and just listening to their stories was devastating. How much more for them who actually experience it. A lot of these girls are not happy but for them it was the only for them to survive. I, honestly, don't believe it's the only. I'm sure there are lots of other ways if they are persistence but..... they came to the point where they believe nobody cares and loves them. I feel for them. And I can only wish there was something I could do to help out.

They could work at mcdonalds without a problem. Stripping just pays a whole lot better.

Oh I'm sure. A few of the girls I've talked to make $300 - 500 and sometimes even more a night. But that's not the point, you see? And you know what I'm mean. But then I've also encountered some who said, "**** dignity and all that values, I make more money here!" when you start talking about the advantages of not being a stripper and the things they could do better.

You're right about a lot, but a lot also see it as an opportunity to make several times the money they could doing anything else. I've known girls who are like you describe who stripped because their self image was so cracked they couldn't imagine having anything else to offer.

I've known strippers who were more-or-less normal young women who just took it as a convenient job (these are the ones who call themselves "Dancers" instead of "Strippers). They either don't last very long or they get caught up in the partying lifestyle and last far too long.

I've also known a very small percentage of strippers who went into it with a plan and used the money to set themselves up financially in such a way that they could call the shots in their lives and live pretty much whatever lifestyle they want for the rest of their lives. It's pretty impressive to talk to someone who's 24 years old and has a paid-for car and home and money in the bank through their own efforts...

I'm not impressed. It would be impressive if it came through the use of intelligence or mental agility instead of promiscuous flexibility. :td:

So you're not impressed by someone who sets themselves up for life through their own hard work?

We're all given a variety of tools with which to make our way in the world. Using those tools (whatever they are) and taking advantage of opportunity is what shows mental agility and intelligence.

Look down your nose and "Tsk.Tsk." all you want, but these girls I'm talking about are smart people who spend a few years living in a manner they would probably rather not to be able to live the rest of their lives picking and choosing whatever jobs make them happy, rather than having to look at the salary as the most important factor.

While we clearly disagree, I feel like having the intelligence, foresight, and mental endurance to accomplish this deserves a lot of respect.

I see where you're coming from, and don't get me wrong I'm not looking down at strippers -- everyone's got their own gig. I'm just not impressed by the bank roll they pull in by simply taking off their clothes and grinding on men. Sure, there is a mental endurance factor that makes it hard work, but in my opinion that's trading self-respect for a Pass Go card. Impressive to me would be using a combination of mental capacity, creativity, and drive to boost into financial security. A stripper doesn't need to better herself mentally or as a person to take advantage of what she started into this world with. That earns little respect from me.

For 16 or 17 years olds to be doing this there has to be a breakdown in the family unit for whatever reason. There aren't a lot of opportunities for them. A lot of these clubs have a no touch/contact policy and are simply for show.

Some of these girls only do this to work their way through college and have no intention of making it their profession. If you're ever in the hospital and see a pretty and fit nurse don't be surprised if that's how they got there.

Trust me, I understand that. I was more-so addressing the ones who are doing it to jump start their career. I recognize that it's no walk in the park to be a stripper and most are there as a last resort. That's why I can't judge 'em -- I'm just not impressed with the money they rake in.

Thing is, as for myself, I would never date, nor marry a stripper. How could I respect my significant other, if she doesn't respect herself enough to make her way in the world using her mind? I wouldn't want random idiots drooling and glaring at my girl, or my wife. Ugh.

I would think that it may be difficult for a girl in that profession to find a decent, upstanding, moral guy. Stranger things have happened, but I could see how it would be tough for them in terms of finding their mr. right, or whatever.

It kind of reminds me of the madonna whore complex, i.e. I've heard it stated that, "there's girls you sleep with, then there's girls you marry, what do you want?" Sad, but sometimes true.

LOL - there was a local strip club that one of my buddies used to go to for lunch. The food was actually awesome. They didn't have lunchtime dancers though :(

Q: What does a stripper do with her a*s before she goes to work?

A: She drops him off at band practice. :D

you show me a hot nurse that works at a local hospital and I'll show you how to go to the hospital in a quick hurry. for medical reasons of course, lol. but yeah 16 is a little young I think to be working at a stripper club. late 17 early 18 then I might be a little bit okay with it but even still, with the way the economy in this country and how pathetic it's becoming, it's no surprise either that more people are working there because it's always goingto bring in money of some kind.

Hmm, I almost wonder if we'll see more of this with our economy taking a crap, curious, but what do you think will be next? I'm thinking they'll lower the club's age restrictions on patrons?

I live in RI and they have some weird laws. Another loophole besides this one was that prostitution was legal as long as it was done indoors. That has since been changed, and this case isn't far behind.

I live in Portland, OR - we have the highest amount of strip clubs/adult stores per capita in the US (and even in the world, I think....). We have men that will fly in from all over, just to go to the strip clubs here.

I've been to few myself; some of them are pretty decent, and the women that work there always come over and chat.

A lot of them are open almost 24/7, and serve food while you're watching the girls. I was dragged to one of the trashier ones once by a guy friend cause he wanted their steak (cause trust me, the girls at this one were NOT lookers) - I guess it was known for having an awesome $3 steak lunch/dinner (the owner also had a cattle ranch). Who knew??
