ID cards will not display union flag to avoid offending Irish nationalists

The union flag has been banned from Britain's new identity card in case it offends the nationalist community in Northern Ireland.

The cards will feature the royal coat of arms, alongside discreet images of a rose, thistle shamrock and daffodil representing the four countries of the UK.

so if the union jack is the flag of the UK, and NI is part of britain, then there shouldnt be anything to be offended about. im welsh and the union jack doesnt resemble any part of the welsh flag and it doesnt offend me. :hmm:

The fecking driving licence doesn't even have the Union flag on it. but it has the European union one. am offended. even my batmobile has the European flag on the number plate. i actually placed a union jack sticker over it and was told by the police to remove my union flag. it infringed DVLA rules, But i could have used the welsh dragon or Scottish Saltire. feck it.

Even Britannia has been removed from our coinage for the first time in 400 years. were being systematically wiped out.

They should put the Rolling Stones' "lips and tongue" logo on the license.

That would be cool.

Lol that would be like banning the maple leaf on government documents because it might offend someone in the Bloc. Thats just stupid if you ask me.

i agree with most of the points made in the thread but in this instance i have to agree that, in NI at least, to put a union jack on the cards would not go down well at all. seeing as how one half of the country is draped in tri-colours...

it wouldn't go down well up here either... for many scots who seem to have it in their heads they're irish..

bin the whole idea i say. what's the point in having them anyways if we have passports?

There's a few Scots who'd disagree.
