Girl, 4, dies after being diagnosed with mumps despite having MMR jab

A four-year-old girl died just days after being diagnosed with mumps, despite having had the controversial MMR vaccine.

Lisa Pollitt was diagnosed with mumps a week before she died on July 20, but had started eating and playing again. But then she took a sudden turn for the worse.

'She was a bit groggy and couldn't get to sleep so I stayed downstairs on the sofa with her,' she mother Patsy said.

not all vaccines work on everybody. sometimes the persons own immune system fails to respond to the vaccine. meaning no immunity is gained. This is even acknowledged in the leaflet that accompanies the vaccine. along with the precautions.

well usualy the vaccine is just a weakened or dead form of the virus. what she was probably injected with wasnt either a dead or weakened form.

Ive been reading alot about how vaccines came along right around the same time hygene was vastly improved among the people. Some say good hygene practic is more responcible for warding off the dieases then the vaccines. I really dont know what to think. I know that I or my family wont be willingly taking any flu shot.

the flu shot ever year is only for one specific flu. the other million or so aren't covered. as for the mumps i didn't know that they were lethal to the young just the old.

Flu shots should really be reserved for people who would most likely die from getting the flu, but, if vaccines were not responsible for warding off diseases then how come when people in England started skipping the MMR vaccine a measles outbreak occurred?

And what about polio? Hygene was already vastly improved before most of the polio deaths in the US occurred not to mention polio has almost been irradicated worldwide, even in countries with poor hygene methods. This argument is extremely weak. I cannot even imagine the feeling of having what appears to be a healthy normal child and then everything changes at 18-24 months and they are diagnosed with autism. I would also look for someone to blame, but, strong emotions seldom solve medical mysteries.

Most fatal cases of the mumps are due to rare events like meningitis, encephalitis, pancreatitis, infected testicals or ovaries and secondary infections in systemic mucus membranes. The mumps is not like chickenpox where it is more dangerous in older people, it is more like the flu where it is more dangerous in people with weaker immune systems like the very young, the very old, immune compromised people.

The article says that her doctor misdiagnosed her with the mumps even though she had the MMR shot. That kind of changes the whole topic here.

Yep. It was the doctor who messed up, not any failure of the shot. And like stevewinn sometimes the shot doesn't work, but on the whole we're a hell of a lot better off thanks to these vaccines.

Ummm... chem,

A four-year-old girl died of a mystery illness after being wrongly diagnosed as having mumps.

The parents of Lisa Pollitt were told by a GP that she had the disease, despite the fact that she had earlier been given the controversial MMR jab.

However tests carried out by the Health Protection Agency concluded that Lisa had almost certainly not contracted mumps.

Where are you linking the MMR vaccine to her death from?

*Whoops, just noticed FurtherBB already picked up on this!
