The picnic that changed Europe

SOPRONKOHIDA, Hungary — Race north on the newly paved country lane from this Hungarian village, past cornfields and patches of woods, and you might miss the Austrian border altogether.

The old border between East and West is now just a seam in the asphalt next to a bike path crossing. There are no signs marking the spot, just a modest statue of a half-open door commemorating the historic events of Aug.19, 1989, which helped bring down the Berlin Wall three months later.

Back then there was no missing the border, then part of the “Iron Curtain” that separated Western Europe from the Soviet-controlled East.

Very inspiring.

Americans (and everyone on earth) should know this history better and should understand the dangers of leftist politics.

It is hard to believe that it is was only twenty years ago that Americans were celebrating with these Europeans the fall of the Soviet Iron Curtain and the fall of leftwing oppression but now we are facing a leftist assault in our own country today.

Hopefully the tea parties can be a catalyst to freedom against the leftists here the way that this picnic was for Europe.

People need to stand up. Freedom is not free.

Come on, a center-left christian president who is only pushing health care reform is the same as Stalin?

There's more to politics than a simple sliding scale.

I never made any such comparison between Stalin and Obama as to call them the same. They are your words not mine.

I simply said that Americans should be aware of the dangers of leftist politics and that they are on the march in America today.

Of course there is more to politics than a sliding scale but for me I hold to indvidual liberty as closely as possible and believe that any government that denies individual liberty by claiming that it is for the public good is becoming oppressive.

The free market is a right. That is the ideology of the right.

If the word 'reform' to you means having the gvernment take the market over then you are oppressing the people for the so-called good of the collective and that is the ideology of a leftist.

Stalin and the communists were "leftists"???!!! What drugs to you do?

Free market is a "right" idea? On what planet?

Reform means taking over the market?!! Oh Really?

Invading soverign nations is a leftist idea?

You've gone from birther to exactly where Bill Maher says the repubs have gone.

Sorry, were you comparing him to Lenin then?

They were on the march during every great leap forward the United States took.

Personal liberty is a leftist idea. And where were you during the Bush administration?

The free market is a right. That is the ideology of the right.

I think you need to put down that copy of Atlas Shrugged. :tu:
