village_idiot Posted August 27, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2009 AMSTERDAM – It's not green cheese, but it might as well be.The Dutch national museum said Thursday that one of its prized possessions, a rock supposedly brought back from the moon by U.S. astronauts, is just a piece of petrified wood. Rijksmuseum spokeswoman Xandra van Gelder, who oversaw the investigation that proved the piece was a fake... Read more... This does not look good... BertL Posted August 27, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2009 It took about two minutes for scientists to find out it was fake. It's been in a private collection (of a Dutch ex-Prime Minister) since 1969, and hasn't been seen by scientists at all until it was in a Rijksmuseum exposition. Last year a physicist saw the "rock" and and immediately noticed that the "moon rock" wasn't anything like a moon rock at all. Then when a petrologist was allowed to examine it last month it almost immediately became clear that the rock didn't come from the Moon at all. This just goes to show that once science gets the chance to do its work, the truth will be uncovered pretty fast.

flyingswan Posted August 28, 2009 #8 Share Posted August 28, 2009 This certainly does not look good....How come they never found this out earlier??? It appears that the US ambassador gave the rock to the Dutch ex-PM to commemorate the visit of the Apollo 11 crew, and the ex-PM just assumed that it was moon rock, although the actual plaque that came with it doesn't say so. All a misunderstanding, and not discovered until recently because the rock wasn't on public display nor ever examined by a scientist in the previous 40 years. Blueguardian Posted August 28, 2009 #9 Share Posted August 28, 2009 The difference between a moon rock and a fake moon rock, the real moon rock isn't made out of wood.
Raptor Posted August 28, 2009 #10 Share Posted August 28, 2009 It's apparent to me the object's source got mixed up. Also honestly I could tell that's not a moon rock by looking at it. It's brown and it's too smooth. A moon rock would be grey and with many craggy bumps and such. It's easy to say that after being made aware of the fact. If you were none the wiser and you were given the same rock under the same circumstances it'd be unreasonable to question it; that's why it took so long to be revealed. starchy Posted August 28, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 28, 2009 Here we go, some possible evidence that the 1st Moon landing was faked. According to a dutch museum a moon rock given to them by Armstrong et al, was fake. Turns out it was a petrified piece of wood. Either 1) They didnt go to the moon, and Nasa has conned the world. 2) The rock is from the moon, and indicates that trees once grew there. We know it has water, but could the moon have once have had an atmosphere, and trees. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8226075.stm

Sweetpumper Posted August 28, 2009 #14 Share Posted August 28, 2009 Shouldn't this be moved to the 'conspiracy' section? What you perceive as strange body language = we didn't land on the moon. Riiiiight. As for this "fake rock" - how about all the rest we gave out that were verified REAL? BertL Posted August 28, 2009 #21 Share Posted August 28, 2009 What the heck makes you think the AS11 Astronauts gave the fake moon rock to the Dutch? It was a US embassador who gave the rock to a Dutch ex-Prime Minister. The rock wasn't seen by the public until 2006, and scientists only had a chance to take a good look at it last month. They found out it was faked after two minutes. If anything, this shows that once scientists get their hands on something they do a great job at uncovering the truth. Two minutes with this rock showed it was fake; many hours with all of the real moon rocks show they are real. Just because a US embassador gave a fake moon rock to an ex-Prime Minister doesn't mean Apollo 11 was fake. That's a giant leap (lame pun intended) you are making there. NASA say they were not handing out moon rock souvenirs at the time.
