Mnemonix Posted October 13, 2012 #376 Share Posted October 13, 2012 (edited) A shrimp's heart is in it's head. That's weird Cattle have more than one stomach: multiple (forgot how many) to collect their chewed up cud in one spot to another until the cattle has fully digested them. That's also weird Is it four? Edited October 13, 2012 by Mnemonix

orangepeaceful79 Posted October 13, 2012 #379 Share Posted October 13, 2012 The Viceroy butterfly is an animal that uses mimicry as a survival tactic. It looks nearly identical to the Monarch butterfly which birds find distasteful due to all the milkweed that the monarch feeds on during its larval stage. Birds avoid Monarchs and also Viceroys because of their close resemblance.

orangepeaceful79 Posted October 13, 2012 #381 Share Posted October 13, 2012 Plate tectonics are made possible by the Asthenosphere - which is a narrow layer of very liquid molten rock that the Lithsosphere (the layer of the Earth's crust that the continental plates are made of) actually "floats" on. The earth's plates move an average of 2 cm per year. (I just taught this lesson to my 8th graders yesterday so its fresh in my mind.)

Viviana98 Posted October 13, 2012 #384 Share Posted October 13, 2012 It has been calculated that in the last 3,500 years, there have only been 230 years of peace throughout the civilized world. Charles Dickens always faced north while sleeping Celtic warriors sometimes fought their battles naked, their bodies dyed blue from head to toe.

Thats pretty sad. And even in those times of relative peace you can rest assured that there were plenty of folks being horrible to each other on a smaller scale. Wonder if we'll ever learn?

orangepeaceful79 Posted October 13, 2012 #391 Share Posted October 13, 2012 Because metal was scarce; the Oscars given out during World War II were made of plaster. For one year in 1943 pennies were minted in steel because of the shortage of copper that manufacturing shell casings for the war effort caused. The longest word in the English language, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is *pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. The only other word with the same amount of letters is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconioses, its plural. Biff Wellington Posted October 15, 2012 #398 Share Posted October 15, 2012 The term "Black Death" is recent. During the plague, it was called "the Great Mortality" or "the Pestilence." Although the period known as the Black Death ended in 1351, the plague continued to return to Europe, with epidemics every few years through the end of the fifteenth century
