Russian Yeti

I'm not aware of if there have been made similar threads about the Russian Yeti. There have been reported "Big Foot" world wide like in countries like Canada, USA, Russia and even in Australia (Yowie).

Yeti from Russia's Vyatka

by Natalia Leskova

Moscow explorers discovered a wigwam of a creature unknown to science in the snow-covered forest

Members of the Kosmopoisk association have returned from an expedition to Russia's Kirov Region where they searched for a bigfoot that allegedly lived in that region. Kosmopoisk leader Vadim Chernobrov says the expedition has discovered a den occupied by a mysterious giant and an underground passage dug obviously not by a human.

Ivan Konovalov has been working as a forest warden for 30 years in the Kirov Region. At first, the man did not plan to stay in that region for long, however he had an important meeting in November 1985 and changed his mind. Ivan Konovalov tells about that meeting: "It was snowing on the day when I was walking along the fir wood and suddenly heard snap of twigs. I turned around and saw an awesome creature covered with dark hair that was much taller than me. It smelt strongly. The beast leant against a pine tree and started bending it down to the ground. The tree was rather thick, but it cracked under the creature's burden. Then the creature started breaking the tree against the knee. Its hands were as thick and long as its legs. Quite of a sudden, the creature felt something and turned its "face" to me. I saw two black eyes and the impression at the bottom of the eyes deeply impressed me. I still remember the look of the eyes. Then the creature flung the tree and quickly left. But I stood thunderstruck and could not move a finger."

After that awesome meeting the forest warden was anticipating another meeting with the bigfoot. However, the man did not doubt that it was a snowman. Ivan Konovalov thinks the creature unknown to science has some mysterious capabilities resembling hypnosis.

It was only twice that he managed to come across the creature face to face. Another time Ivan Konovalov met with a she-yeti and a baby. They noticed the forest warden and ran deep into the forest emitting sounds resembling dog's barking.

Hunter Vasily Kapustin tells that he has seen numerous footprints of a snowman, but came across the creature only once. A hairy creature attacked a young elk, shouldered it and directed toward the forest. When the yeti saw the hunter it was at first confused, then looked at the man with astonishment, emitted some indistinct sound and rushed into the deep forest. Vasily Kapustin felt as if he stood for 15 minutes and then went toward his village. But when he came home it turned out he had spent about four hours in the forest! He had a headache and felt as if he had a hangover. But the hunter was an abstainer. He made an effort to get back to the place where he came across the yeti and discovered the footprints of an enormous naked foot looking very much like a human foot, but wider and bigger in fact. The snow on the site was spotted with blood of the baby elk obviously. However, it was not clear how the creature managed to escape through the deep forest and broke no branches and left practically no traces.

Vadim Chernobrov, the leader of the expedition tells that hunters are as a rule not talkative men; but they enjoy respect of the local population. Locals do believe that some strange forest creatures exist in fact. Those who have ever come across such creatures are treated as people's heroes there.

The two hunters helped the expedition to search the place. Vadim Chernobrov tells that the group set up a tent camp in a big meadow. "I had many baits that were to help us catch a yeti. On the first night the group was really very tired and did not arrange the baits. The baits remained in my tent. The group put out the fire and appointed a man on duty for the night. When we woke up early in the morning we saw a torn side of my tent as if someone attempted to get inside of the tent. My rucksack stood half a meter away from the torn side of the tent. But the man on duty was on the top of a tall pine tree clutching at branches. The guy had a hatchet, and all branches were cut under his feet. It took us much effort to take him down from the tree. He was white from terror, his hands and legs were trembling and he could hardly speak. In two hours he started crying and said he wanted to go back home. His home was far from the tent camp, however the man was so terror-stricken that he would not stay there."

On the next nights, the group chose more experienced people to be on duty. But they did not see anything scary at all. Baits laid around the tent camp brought no success. However, when members of the expedition went deep into the forest in broad daylight they discovered strange things there: trees broken so neatly as if someone chopped firewood there and incisions on trees made either with teeth or with claws.

It was only once that the expedition was actually rewarded for the persistence: the group discovered a den made of stems of trees in the middle of a forest clearing. The den of five square meters did not resemble people or animal's habitation. Vadim Chernobrov together with some members of the group walked around the den and then decided to get inside.

The floor of the den was laid out with logs and rotten leaves, the walls were strong and did not let the cold wind pass through. There was nobody inside of the den. There was some construction covered with sticks in the middle of the "room". Under the sticks, there was a hole of about one meter in diameter leading deep under the ground. The hole was highly likely very deep as a stone thrown down emitted no sound at all. The expedition decided it was an underground passage. However, the group had no special equipment to come down the passage. They just charted the site to get back to it later.

The leader of the expedition says it is now important to gather many experts, biologists, zoologists and doctors to organize another expedition to the mysterious site in the Kirov Region.

Alexey Rozanov, a correspondent member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Paleontology Institute says that yeti is one of the most mysterious puzzles of present-day science. Opinions still differ whether yeti exists or not. Some people believe there is no documented evidence proving existence of yeti; all photos and videos allegedly showing yeti are falsifications. Others say that yetis are in fact baboons, huge monkeys, and Himalayan bears about two meters tall. There is an opinion that yeti is an offshoot of the primates developing parallel to human beings. At the time when human brain and intellect developed, yeti acquired some extrasensory capabilities. Some researchers believe that people's hairy neighbors can not only hypnotize, but also levitate, become invisible or cure any diseases with a glance. There are even more fantastic hypotheses saying that yetis are wood-goblins, demons or some beings from the parallel world. Unfortunately, there is not single evidence proving any of the fantastic suggestions.

Legends about yeti go back to the antiquity; it was mentioned for the first time about 4 thousand years ago, crypt-zoologist, doctor of biological science Alexander Bayanov tells. More information about yeti appears every year. Japan mountaineers left for the Himalayas in August 2002 to search for yeti; they got back from the expedition absolutely confident that yeti actually existed. The mountaineers brought about ten pictures of yeti footprints taken on the slopes of the Dhaulakhari mountain and told they had seen an apelike creature quickly running about the mountain slopes. There is evidence provided by an American mountain-skier who came across two hairy creatures when he descended from Everest. He says the creatures were neither animals nor humans. The meeting ended like any other story connected with yeti: the creatures suddenly disappeared.

In two months, it was reported from Pakistan that a hairy creature near the settlement of Haripura attacked a 20-year-old native. The creature seized the guy's shoulder and scratched him, but when the native cried, the creature got scared and ran away. Doctors examined the guy's wounds, but could not say what the creature actually was.

A hairy very tall creature was also once seen in Russia near the cities of St.Petersburg and Tomsk. A mummified paw of some ancient animal belonging to none of the known to science species was discovered in Russia's Altai Mountains. Vice-president of the Russian Association of Vet Anatomists Yury Malafeyev took an X-ray photograph of the paw and made a conclusion that it looked very much like a human hand, but covered with red fur and of a bigger size.

After the introduction of the "internet" Russia ( among most countries ) can now easily read our " legends" and stories.I think for every " crypto" that gets reported somewhere , another pops up in a diferent country...Kind of like a High School " Urban Legend"......Anyway , here is another decent read , really no way to verify any of it though.....

The expedition that went looking for bigfoots in a cave in the mountains of Siberia has so far been fruitless, but its organizers blame the weather for failure and say they will return in summer. Earlier this week an expedition headed by “yeti specialist” Igor Burtsev set off to explore the several kilometer long cave in the Kemerovo Region, where local hunters reported to have seen the creatures. The expedition returned to Moscow without any success.“Our expedition visited the Azasskaya Cave. Unfortunately, we did not find any direct evidence of a bigfoot's presence there,” Burtsev was quoted by RIA Novosti as telling a press conference directly after hisreturn.

But he was not discouraged by this failure, blaming it on bad weather and the curiousity of local people.“People are simply pouring in there now. If there had been any footprints there originally, they were destroyed,” he said. Besides, the cave is very deep, Burtsev said, and to explore its full length, a team of speleologists would have to join the mission. Since the exploration was made almost impossible by heavy snow drifts, the expedition should return in summer, he added. In February the administration of Kemerovo Region in Russia's Siberia started receiving reports from local hunters who claimed to have seen human-like creatures near Azasskaya Cave, 500 kilometers off the city of Kemerovo. The creatures reportedly were 1.5-2 meters tall and covered in fur. One of the hunters also made a photograph of what he said was the creature'sfootprint in the snow. Burtsev, a PhD in History and a passionate believer in bigfoots, says he sees nothing strange about bigfoots possibly showing up in the Kemerovo region. Its mountains are part of the Altai range, thought to be the favorite yetis reproduction spot. In late 19th and early 20th century, he says, female creatures with young ones were frequently spotted there. The Russian Academy of Sciences, however, is skeptical of Burtsev's enthusiasm. To preserve a stable population, there would have to be many yetis, but only single creatures have so far been spotted, an anthropologist of the Academy, Sergei Vasilyev, told RIA Novosti. Besides, no body of a bigfoot has ever been found and studied, no matter how many sightings have been reported.

Interesting point of view, Sakari. There have been spottet only few yetis. To preserve a stable population there should had been many Yetis to be spottet. I do find it odd that there had been reported only few spots of Yetis through time generally. On the other hand it is difficult to spot lots of Yetis if most of them lives in mountain areas.

Yet i still have little knowledge about the subject. I find it interesting, and it is my intention to do more reseach about it.

Here is an alleged Yeti caught on film at Tatra mountains area of Poland:

The typical thing about these......

"But because the camera shakes so much it is difficult to say what it is exactly. We need to go to the site and see what traces, if any, were left."

I also think it's a good idea to go to the site to check out the area. Yeti experts are heading to Poland. I look forward to see their results of their expedition.

Didn't the article say the most recent activity was 2004? Not much likely to be left. Maybe some fallen down remains of sticks or logs. What they need to look for is more recent traces of the creatures. A good amount of hair or poop would do greatly to figure out if this was simply some poor deformed human or if it was a different hominid.

From earlier (80s-90s etc) examples, Russia has tended to be rather liberal, in general, whether government or media, with their definition of "verified", from telepathy to UFO to now Yeti. This doesn't appear to fall far from the tree.

Hi Ra

Nice to see you in Cryptozoology. I feel you would love this story about Zana and her children. Supposedly a caught and tamed Alma, or Yeti. One of my favorite examples, and really quite plausible that Zana was a legendary wild person.

Zana was a female who had been caught and tamed and who lived and died within the memory of a number of people still alive at the time of the research. She was buried near the village of Tkhina in the Ochamchiri District of Abkhazia in the 1880s or 1890s.

The manner of her capture is vague. Some said it was not a chance catch. Hunters familiar with an age-old technique tied her up, and, when she furiously fought back, hit her with cudgels, gagged her mouth with felt, and shackled her legs to a log. Probably she had already changed hands by sale when she became property of the ruling prince D.M.Achba who was the titular head of the Zaadan region. She passed into the possession of one of his vassals, named Chelokua and still later she was presented to a nobleman, Edgi Genaba, who visited the region. He took her away, still shackled and chained, to his estate in the village of Tkhina on the Mokva River, 78 kilometres from Sukhumi.

That was an interesting story. While probably just a 'wild' person it still is intriguing.

Hrrmzzzz, now this is where Biff gets interesting.

Read on.............. check out the opinions of those who examined the skull of her son. What a shame hers has not yet been found.

I wont wreck it for everyone, let me know what you think........

i wonder if cryptozoology is important in Russia

I would say so, they have better Biff stories than the US, they just don't put them in every tabloid. There have been several expeditions to look for Almas.

From Wikipedia.

Sightings recorded in writing go back as far back as the 15th century.

In 1430, Hans Schiltberger recorded his personal observation of these creatures in the journal of his trip to Mongolia as a prisoner of the Mongol Khan. Schiltberger also recorded one of the first European sightings of Przewalski horses. (Manuscript in the Munich Municipal Library, Sign. 1603, Bl. 210)(Shackley, 94). He noted that Almasty are part of the Mongolian and Tibetan apothecary's materia medica, along with thousands of other animals and plants that live today.

British anthropologist Myra Shackley in Still Living? describes Ivan Ivlov's 1963 observation of a family group of Almas. Ivlov, a pediatrician, decided to interview some of the Mongolian children who were his patients, and discovered that many of them had also seen Almases. It seems that neither the Mongol children nor the young Almas were afraid of each other. Ivlov's driver also claimed to have seen them

Here is a cryptic one for you- the Russian Cryptid, The God Bear a.k.a Irkuiem translated as‘trousers pulled down’ - from the link The Korjak and Chukchi natives described a beast with forelegs far longer than the hind, and a bulge of fat between the hind legs which often reaches to the ground, giving the appearance of a pulled-down pair of pants, and the creature its name. The beast’s numbers were declining, the hunter said, since the introduction of rifles to the area.

Thanks

PotterManiac

Thanks Pottermaniac :) I agree, it is interesting stuff. Especially that local who's job was to guard the tents at night, and one night while he was guarding he had to hurry climb up a tree when this Yeti arrived, and the Yety was too heavy for that tree to try to climb up to that local guard as the branches broke caused by it's heavy weight. The Yeti then gave up in it's attempt to kill that local guard. That Yeati was so eager to eat that local guard for breakfast, but realized it had to give up. But then the tents catched the Yeti's attention. The Yeti used a torn to try to cut up their tent but gave up when the Yeti discovered that it was not that easy to cut up the tent (the torn was still there when the rest of the crew woke up the following morning), so the Yeti had to get back home to it's underground cave.

And poor that local guard he was almost scared to death and got back home to his hometown as soon as possible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sten_Bergman

In 1920 Bergman observed the skin of a black Kamchatkan bear, and noted it was much larger than bears commonly found in the area, with shorter hair.[1] He also described several large tracks that had been found and termed the bear Ursus arctos piscator, although it is usually known as Bergman's Bear. No sightings of the species have been reported since Bergman's description in 1936.

http://www.animalpicturesarchive.com/view.php?did=25168&tid=3 The Brown Bear of today http://www.russianbearhunt.com/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctodus N.K. Vereshchagin was one of the Russian biologists who received a description of the Irkuiem from the hunter. Vereshchagin advanced a radical theory that the mysterious ‘trousers pulled down’ was a surviving remnant of Arctodus simus, a truly monstrous prehistoric bear native to North America and Russia. The bear stood nearly six feet tall at the shoulders, and was twice as large as the largest ursine when it reared up on its hind legs. Vereshchagin wrote a 1987 article in the magazine Ohota in which he advanced the Arctodus theory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctodus_simus

But i thought these above mentioned prehistoric Bears were extinct for good. Seems some of them survived from extinction and lives far away from were people lives, and sometimes encounts with these few surviving prehistoric Bears obviosly happens.

Anyway, there are reported that some of the male Polar Bears (world's largest bear) are over 4 meters tall when it stands up and weighing about 2,200 lbs (about 1 ton = 1,000 kilo) and that make these big Polar Bears heavier than the extinct Arctodus Simus (entirely extinct?).

http://www.cryptozoology.com/cryptids/godbear.php But i don't see any Yeti sightings in that link  Anyway, very interesting link, Psyche101 :)

I think you forgot to add the Swedish zoologist, Sten Bergman in your >>Those mad Russians!!! :D Gotta love 'em 'eh<< sentence, so your sentence should instead sound like this >>Those mad swedish people and Russians!!! :D Gotta love 'em 'eh<< :P Never mind, we all make mistakes sometimes, so no harm done there. :)

http://www.mysteriousaustralia.com/yowiesmain.html

Katoomba, NSW--The recent anxiety among truck drivers on the Newell Highway about giant hairy Yowies is not new and can be traced back to Yowie activity in the 1870's, says Rex Gilroy, Director of Mount York Natural History Museum near Katoomba, and Australia's leading Authority on Yowies.

He said "Truckies wont stop and sleep at nights on the Newell Highway. In fact is was barricaded recently because certain weird and unexplained things have been happening up there. One truckie (Aussie truckie) was parked on a desolate part of the highway north of Coonabarabran recently with a load of cattle on his truck. They started bellowing and woke him up. When he got up and went around to the back of the truck he saw something that looked liked a big Gorilla disappearing into the scrub." Sightings on the Newell Highway go back to the 1870's with newspaper reports of a creature seen by a government wagonette driver.

If you look at that link, Psyche101, there are photos of very big footprints of the Yowies that is almost human like but just much bigger and wider footprints. Looks almost like a Gorilla? I don't think a Gorilla escaped from the local Zoo of Australia, otherwise it would had been on the Australian news. Beside, a Yowie is said to stands more on it's feet than Gorillas does. Gorillas lives in the hot climate of Africa. So if Gorillas can live in the hot climate of Africa then a Hairy creature like Yowie may be able to live in the hot climate of Australia, as the climate of Afrika is almost similar to the climate of Australia.

Thank you so much, Psyche101. Cryptozoology is an interesting area. You are the one who caught my attention about Sasquatch when you some time ago mentioned that "Sasquatch is as much fantasy myth's as ET's are" (something like that) in one of the UFO threads. And don't worry, i find it very okay that people have different opinions about for example "Strange" looking creatures, otherwise the world would be boring if all people had same opinions / same logic point of view on such subjects. So it is nice that we all have different opinions and different point of views. Many years ago i read a little bit some books about Yeti (Big Foot), just for a short while and then lost interest. So all these years i forgot all about Sasquatch, until my interest of that subject woke up again, thanks to you.

Thanks for welcome me into the Cryptozoology world, Psyche101 :)

I enjoyed to read that Zana story, and thanks for bringing up that link. Indeed very interesting reading. When i read something of interest that catch my attention in some intense way then i like to read every word slowly so i can "travel" into that world deeply. :geek:

I'm not talking about these footages, but seems funny enough though!

Now to more serious stuffs:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rex_Gilroy

Rex Gilroy (born in New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian who has published books and articles on cryptids and unexplained or speculative phenomena. His work has focused on yowie reports, 'out of place' animals, UFOs, and propositions regarding a 'lost' Australian civilization. He has contributed to, or been the subject of, several articles, in speculative media such as Nexus magazine and in Australian newspapers. He is the author and publisher of several books, the first of which appeared in 1986. He has documented over 3000 reports relating to yowies. [1] His eclectic career has seen field research into butterflies and anthropology, but he remains most notable for his controversial searches for the recently extinct Thylacine, Moas, alien big cats or the source of the yowie legend.

http://sasquatchresearch.net/hominoids.html

Dr. Krantz - a noted scholar of physical and cultural anthropology and an active Professor of nthropology at Washington State University until shortly before his death, was the first, and for years the only, serious academic to conduct research into the question of whether the North American "Sasquatch" or "Bigfoot" is an animal that exists in fact, in addition to legend. Gigantopithics Blacki & Meganthropus were the two fossil hominoids that were his creation. Many Sasquatch/Bigfoot reports look very similiar to the features these to recontructions reveal.

Seems Rex Gilroy and Dr. Krantz do not make stuff up. Both Gilroy and Krantz seems very serious!

And as for all those pyramids dotted all over Australia, and which all Australians would be familiar with... Given her sole reference is the equally nutty Rex Gilroy her claims to all sorts of miracles seem very shaky indeed. Mr Gilroy is an "open-minded researcher" (so openminded his cognitive faculties appear to have fallen out) who believes in yowies (Australian cousins of Bigfoot), big cats in the outback, pyramids in the Pacific, 25 foot tall ancestral humans, UFOs, alien abductions, an underground world in the Blue Mountains and a giant space station orbitting Earth, and "URU, the Lost Civilization of Australia". According to Mr Gilroy, Australia in the past was busier than LAX, being visited by "Arabs, Celts, Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Inca's, Phoenicians, Portuguese, Scandinavians, Spanish, Vikings".

Others might think Mr Gilroy is a proud purveyor of bull, including, apparently, many archaeologists and egyptologists (unless the lost Egyptian who left hieroglyphs in Australia was illiterate, had no understanding of Egyptian grammar, and was sorely confused about Egyptian history), but EoR finds the national broadcaster is, as ever, ready to support the lunatic fringe with Eor's taxes.

It is because of my scientific approach that I've come up with the truth.

That "scientific approach" must also include the "psychic flashes" he mentions.

There are two sides to every story.

Yes, they do. Gigantopethicus by all counts was quadrupedal. The story of Zana seems one of the more credible ones, and she writes Giganopethicus off as a candidate also.

25 foot tall, humans? Geez, even you couldn't swallow that one Ra. I Live about 3 Hrs South of the Cough* cough* "Gympie Pyramid." It is not a pyramid. Italian farmers terraced the hill in the early 1900's to grow grapes.
