When the 120 million-year-old Chinese fossil called Archaeoraptor was discovered in 1999, National Geographic magazine touted it as a major find that could settle the debate about whether birds evolved from dinosaurs. But upon closer examination a panel of experts concluded the fossil was a composite consisting of the tail of a tiny dinosaur and bits of at least one other animal that had been cleverly glued together.
