Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza is facing 11 terror-related charges including hostage taking and supporting al-Qaeda, says the US government.

US Attorney General John Ashcroft announced the charges in New York as Abu Hamza appeared in a British court to face extradition proceedings.

One charge accuses of him of being involved in an attack in Yemen in 1998 that resulted in four hostages' deaths.

He was remanded in custody until the next stage of the extradition process.

Abu Hamza is also accused of providing support and resources for terrorists, particularly al-Qaeda and of attempting to set up a terror training camp in Bly, Oregon.

Mr Ashcroft said the cleric could face the death penalty or life imprisonment if found guilty.

The US will use every diplomatic, legal and administrative tool to pursue and to prosecute those who facilitate terrorist activity

However under current national and European laws, Britain must ask the US to pledge they will not apply the death penalty before any possible extradition is approved.

Home Secretary David Blunkett said: "We have an agreement with the Americans which I renewed a year ago with John Ashcroft which means that on his extradition they are entitled to find him guilty, they are entitled to kill in the sentence but they will not carry out an execution."

As Mr Blunkett has already certified the US extradition request, it is now up to a district judge to assess whether the evidence is strong enough to warrant extradition.

According to the indictment, Abu Hamza provided "material support" for al-Qaeda and the Taleban to bring about "violent jihad" in Afghanistan.

He is accused of acting as an intermediary with a terrorist group that took 16 tourists hostage in the Yemen, six years ago,

He is said to have spoken to the terrorists before and after the incident.

Three British tourists and one Australian were killed when they were used as human shields during a shoot-out with Yemen rescuers, it is claimed.

Abu Hamza was arrested at his Shepherd's Bush home early on Thursday after US officials

said they wanted to extradite him to face the charges.

Good riddance to this sick, revolting little man.

What troubles me is the way he and his followers have been able to use every loophole in our pathetically liberal laws, to be protected by the very system and culture they hate so much.

Either things change soon, or we're going to learn a very big, very painful lesson.

I just found a profile of Abu Hazma this man is one sick a$$h@le!

Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Masri is one of the most distinctive radical Islamic figures in Britain.

Condemned by many Muslims as too extreme, the former Soho nightclub bouncer denies any involvement in terrorism.

But the 47-year-old has also defiantly justified the attacks in New York and Washington in September 2001.

Now he has been arrested in London on an extradition warrant issued by the US government.

He was born Mustafa Kamel Mustafa in Alexandria, Egypt, to middle-class parents. In 1979, he came to London with plans to become a civil engineer.

Divorce

He studied in Brighton and later worked as a doorman in the West End.

He married a western woman, Valerie Fleming, in 1981 and received his British citizenship, although the Home Office is currently trying to have that removed.

Bin Laden is a good guy. Everyone likes him in the Muslim world, there is nothing wrong with the man and his beliefs

Ms Fleming is reported as saying her ex-husband became more radical after their marriage and the couple divorced five years later.

In the early 1990s, he travelled to Afghanistan where rebels were fighting Soviet occupation.

It was there he sustained the injuries to his hand and eye - apparently clearing landmines for the Mujaheddin - that make him such a distinct figure.

He has also claimed to have worked in the Muslim community in Bosnia.

Son jailed

In 1999, Abu Hamza was questioned by Scotland Yard detectives on suspicion of terrorism offences in Yemen.

He was held for several days before being released without charge. He has always maintained his innocence.

The Yemeni authorities had requested his arrest and extradition, claiming he was linked to plots to bomb targets there.

In the same year, his son Mohammed Mustafa Kamel was sentenced to three years in prison in Yemen for his involvement in a terrorist bombing campaign when aged 17.

He returned to Britain in 2002 after completing his sentence.

Abu Hamza runs Supporters of Sharia, which is a group dedicated to the rule of Islamic law.

In 2002 he addressed a rally in central London called by the radical Islamic group al-Muhajiroun, where members spoke of their support for al-Qaeda.

But he strongly denies American suggestions he recruits al-Qaeda terrorists.

Many people will be happy, jumping up and down [after September 11]. America is a crazy superpower and what was done was done in self-defence

His most infamous comments include praise for Osama Bin Laden and warnings to the UK Government about the consequences of attacking Iraq.

These have provoked as much condemnation from within Islam as from outside. Many Muslims say he only represents a few hundred people.

In February 2003, he was banned from preaching at the mosque by the Charity Commission but he continued to speak from the street outside.

Home Secretary David Blunkett believes the radical cleric is linked to international terrorism but attempts to strip his British citizenship and deport him to Yemen have been delayed.

An appeal against the decision to deport him was due in January 2005.

Blunkett Defends UK Hazma Probe

Home Secretary David Blunkett has defended the UK investigation of radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza, who is facing 11 terror charges in the US.

The US aims to get the preacher extradited to face charges including hostage taking and supporting al-Qaeda.

"Obviously if we had that evidence and it related to our country, we would have been able to take action through our courts," Mr Blunkett told the BBC.

He had withdrawn Mr Hamza's citizenship based on UK information, he said.

Mr Hamza is challenging that move.

Death penalty?

Uncertainty continues to hang over his possible fate after he was arrested at his Shepherds Bush home in London on Thursday and remanded in custody at a court hearing.

Mr Hamza gave a slight laugh and shrugged his shoulders when asked if he would consent to being extradited.

"I don't really think I want to, no," he said.

There is confusion over whether the UK Government could enforce a US promise that it would not execute Abu Hamza if found guilty.

US Attorney General John Ashcroft announced the charges in New York.

Mr Hamza is accused of acting as an intermediary with a terrorist group which took 16 tourists hostage in the Yemen, six years ago,

Three British tourists and one Australian were killed when they were used as human shields during a shoot-out with Yemen rescuers, it is claimed.

Mr Hamza also provided support and resources for terrorists, particularly al-Qaeda, and attempted to set up a terror training camp in Bly, Oregon, it is alleged.

Mr Ashcroft said the cleric could face the death penalty or life imprisonment if found guilty.

However under current laws, Britain must ask the US to pledge they will not apply the death penalty before any extradition is approved.

Mr Blunkett said: "We have an agreement with the Americans, which means that on his extradition they are entitled to find him guilty, they are entitled to kill in the sentence but they will not carry out an execution."

But a barrister specialising in extradition cases, Paul Garlick, says that guarantee would have no legal standing once Abu Hamza was in the US.

'Violent jihad'

Former assistant US attorney-general Victoria Tonsing insisted there would be no possibility of an execution: "if you ever broke a promise like that, there would never be another extradition."

It was likely the relevant officials would get together and thrash out a solution, said BBC Washington correspondent Michael Buchanan.

Muslim cleric Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that Mr Hamza did not support violence but "because he is a Muslim, he is guilty by default because he opposes American and British foreign policy".

"Anybody who looks into the case will see Abu Hamza is a victim of what he believes. The US Government has failed to find al-Qaeda members, they turn against the sympathisers of al-Qaeda.

"The British Government and British police never found any evidence against Sheikh Abu Hamza, who was living on their own doorstep."

Abu Hamza is already at the centre of a deportation battle with the Home Office, which wants to remove his citizenship, gained through marriage in 1981.

He was a regular preacher at the Finsbury Park mosque until February 2003 when he was banned by the Charity Commission for using his position for "personal and political, rather than charitable purposes".

But he has continued to preach to worshippers outside the mosque.

Sadly, this man is not going to be sent packing to the States in the near future.

This guy will use legal aid and every loophole available to slow this process down.

The other problem is that the US are saying that he could face the death penalty; the British Government will never allow someone to be extradited if that is the case.

Rather pathetic aren't we. Now if I were in charge I would have had MI5 to spy on him and his meetings, find out his supporters, then in one swoop arrest them all and take deport them... not my faul the ship went down with all hands barring the crew after it left port. grin2.gif

Muslim cleric Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that Mr Hamza did not support violence but "because he is a Muslim, he is guilty by default because he opposes American and British foreign policy".

I'd deport him too.

Furthermore the British Mulsim Parliment's leader Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui said: "His irrespsonible behaviour does not justify his disappearance into the black hole of America's... questionable justice."

.... And why exactly does Britain has a MUSLIM PARLIMENT? Isn't that just encouraging people to rebel against the established and ligitiment governments?

Yep, I'd deport the Muslim Parliment too.

Someone's already posted pics of D-Day, didn't WW2 tell us anything? Didn't we learn from it? Fascism must be destroyed, no quarter offered or given - and these people are fascists!!

Disclaimer: These people means the Islamic Parilment and the fantatics their defending, not all Muslims as I know someone is going to try and claim thats what I'm implying
