Still Waters Posted December 15, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 15, 2009 Bank robbers have threatened tellers with knives, shot their way into banks and tunnelled up into vaults. But one woman in southern Russia chose a more peaceful method: Police say Galina Korzhova hypnotised a bank teller into handing over tens of thousands of dollars in what is believed to be just one in a series of daring, if non-violent, bank robberies.Galina Korzhova was arrested, said Anton Kornoukhov, a spokesman for police in the southern city of Volgograd, on suspicion of hypnotising a bank teller in the nearby town of Volzhky into giving her more than $80,000.She is suspected of having robbed up to 30 additional banks in what Russian media have called a "grand tour" around the country. UltraThunderMan Posted December 15, 2009 #2 Share Posted December 15, 2009 I doubt this is what happened. I thought you couldn't be hypnotized unless you were a willing participant.
Paranormalcy Posted December 16, 2009 #3 Share Posted December 16, 2009 Stage and gimmick hypnotists like Daren Brown and such can sort of "trick" people into a hypnosis-like state of being sort of oblivious to some things, which I suppose MIGHT have happened here, but yeah I'm pretty skeptical. :PsYKoTiC:BeHAvIoR: Posted December 16, 2009 #4 Share Posted December 16, 2009 Haha, that's an interesting way of commiting a crime. I bet the teller was a man because I'm thinking all she actually did to 'hypnotize' was to flash the man and ordered him to give her money. WoIverine Posted December 16, 2009 #6 Share Posted December 16, 2009 (edited) The article actually mentions Wolf Messing...he was definitely an enigma, he demonstrated, and had documented his mental abilities, supposedly to even Stalin himself. Messing actually infiltrated a russian military base, via making the officers think he was a senior officer, made his way to Stalin's chambers, could've probably killed him if he wanted to. Mbyte Posted December 16, 2009 #8 Share Posted December 16, 2009 (edited) I started reading up on hypnotism when I heard a man was robbing shops buy hypnotising the cashier. When you watch penn and tellers' episode about hypnotism they say you are basically bullting yourself. YOu know whats happening but you play along. However hynotism is more then that. People have desinged ways to trick the mind. Whenyou watch a movie at the cinema you are by defenition hypnotised. You are not aware of anyone else around you but the moving pucture infront of you. The odd time you will snap out of it. The idea is to get the to trigger the mind into an automatic process. Darren brown has demonstrated how you can trick the bookie into giving you money even though the ticket isen't a winning ticket. He even tricked a man into giving him real money even though he gave him a blank peace of paper. All these examples were achieved by throwing the mind out of it's routine and into another routine, shifting the persons counsciousness onto another task. When you drive a car you can either consciously drive the car or you can day dream and still drive the car. The hypnotists job is to shift your conscious attention off of driving the car. There are a few techinques that they have developed to do this. Darren brown continously bombarded the casheir with questions about what routes to take on the subway to get to a specific place. He then gave him the blank note and the cashiers took it and gave him any amount of change because he was tring to think so hard on about the subway routes. It's only when the person thinks about the moment after the incident has occoured only then does he realise he ****ed up, by that time the hynotist is gone. Another method is to throw someone off by saying something that makes completely no sesnse what so ever. The person takes time to think to themselves "what did he say" "oh no i've lost track on what he's talking about" " maybe if i think about what he said over and over it will make some sense". By that time you might have done something stupid like giving him your wallet, because he asked for it. It sound impossible but it works if you do it right. These are only apsects of the techniques used. There is probably much more involved but it's not impossible. jbondo Posted December 16, 2009 #11 Share Posted December 16, 2009 It is said that even under hypnosis you can't be forced to do something you don't want to do. I too thought of Dan Brown. I also believe there is something going on with the Roma woman. I think she has a knack for finding people that are superstitious and also have major problems. She promises to get rid of curses, etc...for a price. She also has an ability to make them mentally more agreeable than usual. Then when the people realize she's done nothing to help them they tell there employer.

MARAB0D Posted December 16, 2009 #13 Share Posted December 16, 2009 The article actually mentions Wolf Messing...he was definitely an enigma, he demonstrated, and had documented his mental abilities, supposedly to even Stalin himself. Messing actually infiltrated a russian military base, via making the officers think he was a senior officer, made his way to Stalin's chambers, could've probably killed him if he wanted to. I read Wolf first made this when he was a boy. He desperately needed to travel by train and had no money to buy a ticket, and was scared when the conductors came in to check the tickets. When asked he found nothing better than to look in the eyes of the railway official and show him some old piece of paper from the back pocket. To his surprise the officer punched a whole in his "ticket" and turned to the next passenger. Wolf was so surprised that later started to do similar tricks to known and unknown people just to check if he indeed had some strange talent. I believe in the story of this robbery, as I saw similar things done. there is no "cooperation" needed from the other person as this is not a true hypnosis as in medical case; it is a certain way to behave and speak "naturally" that the other person commits unusual things, still thinking them to be quite normal and correct. It has something from the witchcrafts, as the perpetrator imposes a fake reality on the victim - but no magic is involved of course. Most of Gypsies know how to do this, it is in their culture - so the others learn from them. Gypsies can do this even to the guard dogs, easily passing between them on the guarded property. ~Onyx~ Posted December 17, 2009 #18 Share Posted December 17, 2009 Unfortunatey, the only thing her "hypnotism" will possibly be getting her now is a few more smokes and seconds of salisbury steak on Tuesdays.
