Still Waters Posted December 18, 2009 #1 Share Posted December 18, 2009 Schools should stop labelling children 'dyslexic' because the condition cannot be distinguished from other reading difficulties, an all-party group of MPs will declare today. The Government's definition of dyslexia is too broad to be meaningful, according to the Commons Science and Technology Committee. Schools should target extra help at all children struggling with reading and not just those diagnosed with dyslexia, it added. The MPs recommended that dyslexia teachers should be renamed 'literacy difficulty' teachers. Read more...

No, it's preventing misdiagnosis. The fact is that some children take longer to learn than others. This could be down to all sorts of problems; the teacher not being able to relate to the children well enough, the kid just not paying attention in class, problems at home etc. Then just because they've fallen behind the curve they're diagnosed as having a disorder - a learning difficulty that's inherent to the actual individual. It's just plain senseless, and I'm glad this is finally being recognized.
danielost Posted December 19, 2009 #7 Share Posted December 19, 2009 part of the normal teachers job should be to tell when a student needs extra help. if he/she isn't able to provide the help then an expert needs to be called in. sometimes to get expert help you have to put a label on the problem. said label may be wrong but it is the only way to get help. Raptor Posted December 19, 2009 #8 Share Posted December 19, 2009 (edited) part of the normal teachers job should be to tell when a student needs extra help. if he/she isn't able to provide the help then an expert needs to be called in. sometimes to get expert help you have to put a label on the problem. said label may be wrong but it is the only way to get help. It might help to get reinforcements in, sure, but will that really help if they're coming in with the wrong impression? Will a child that's been wrongly diagnosed then be taught how to read using a method developed specifically for people who really have dyslexia, but ineffective for people without it? What about kids that really do have it? Is there less help available for them because resources are being spent on assisting children without it? I don't think a lack of information is ever a good thing, and any steps taken to try to ensure we're getting closer to a truer picture of events should be commended.
