Wookietim Posted January 31, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 31, 2010 Anyone else out there ever read this book? It's obviously a pure comedy, just as all of his books are... But it seems to me that perhaps - just perhaps - he has stumbled onto the nugget of a real idea here... For those who have not read it, the book concerns Jack Banion (And obvious synthesis of pretty much all the Sunday morning talk show hosts with a little of O'Reilley tossed in for good measure) being "Abducted by aliens" and going on a public rampage about the subject. The kicker is that there are no real aliens - that a shadow organization in the US govt called "Majestic-12" is actually in charge of abductions, cattle mutilations and such. The idea is that if the govt convinces people that "Aliens are hovering over every house, they won't be so quick to vote against big military spending." So MJ-12 abducts people and causes UFO sightings around the world just to keep a low level of UFO hysteria bubbling in order to make sure that the US govt looks like it knows more about UFO's than they are letting on (And therefore seeming to have miraculous secret weapons to it's enemies) and also to make sure that military spending keeps flowing. It's a broad satire of DC (As every Chris buckley book is) but there is something there that actually makes a certain kind of sense...
