Russia unveils its first stealth fighter jet

Russia has unveiled its new stealth fighter jet, meant to boost the country's ageing arsenal of weaponry and be a rival to the US F-22 Raptor.

The Sukhoi T-50, also called the PAK FA, made its maiden flight in Russia's far east.Test pilot Sergei Bogdan said it was "easy and comfortable to pilot".

I was rather unhappy with the statement: " but also gain a significant share of the world market". When are Countries and Governments going to learn that Selling Advanced Technology to poor country's simply gives THEM better weapons to attack them in the future. Have they no concept of the "Prime Directive"!

So how long before Iran has their F-106's replaced with this New Sukhoi T-50, i mean Russia and them are trade friends!

I'm suprised Sukhoi actually had the technology to produce such an aircraft. I would've thought Mikoyan-Gruevich (MiG) would be the primary contractor. I'm sensing a problem with most of the members on here is that it seems, according to them, Russia is not allowed a stealth fighter. There wouldn't be much point selling them to Iran because a) Iran probably would not have enough money to buy such aircraft If they did, they would produce it in Iran itself from parts which will be put together by someone with the IQ of a lemur and c) they will probably be given to iran twenty to thirty years in the future anyway.

OK, I'll bite. this is a very advanced aircraft. Frankly, why laugh at them for taking so long? Did they really need it before now? All this disrespect is nothing more than nervous laughter from a frightened child.

Oh and they are planning on selling them. Probably to whomever can afford them. Of course they would likely give a discount to countries that don't like America.

Give them credit people. They've had to change from Communism (Socialism) to Democracy (Capitalism)or look like they have) almost overnight. for them to even have survived the past 20 years is incredible.

F-106s? Ah, if only there were some of those still operational. The IRIAF does still have some F-4s and F-14s operational, though, in fact I think they're the only operator of the Tomcat now. That's ironic, isn't it.

Actually, I wonder if the USAF might be getting a little rusty in air combat experience, since they haven't really had any to speak of since Gulf War I (since Milosevic thought better of risking what air force he had, and Saddam buried his MiGs in the sand, and to the Taliban, an airplane is "big metal bird that go boom".)

Hmmm, I wouldn't be too sure. It's by no means always a simple question of overwhelming technological superiority; look no further, dare I say, than Afghanistan. And go back a few years; the Vietnamese People's Air Force Mig-17s and 19s, were several generations behind the F-4, but until the USN got around to training pilots in the lost art of air combat*, it was by no means a foregone conclusion who'd come out on top.

(*The USAF never really did get round to it.)

The Su-27 and its fellows is hardly stone age technology; the electronics and software may not be as cutting edge as a Raptor, but the Russians know how to make some pretty decent combat aircraft.

Russian pilots are among the best in the world. Don't think they won't know how to utilize every nuance of this aircraft.

Maybe they did, right at the start of the jet aircraft development, when they got their hands on some of the German advanced projects (but then, so did the US and UK), and the British govt. kindly let them have a Rolls-Royce jet engine to have a look at, but they seem to have managed to cobble together a pretty effective range of designs of their own from that starting point.

Never underestimate the Russians. we all take the p*** out of them since the collapse of the soviet union. but forget not, the Russians are tough as nails.

This fighter will have sent shivers down the spines of the top brass at NATO. it makes the Euro fighter look like a waste of money?

i never read the article but i believe the Indians were part of the project and put forward quite alot of money.

I would say the Brits are a bit better than the Russians at the spy game. As for stealing technology, yes, the Soviet Union does quite allot of that. Left to their own technology they tend to live in the 60's and 70's. I've seen it first hand in how they build control panels. Most everyone used panel views and PC control while they use switches, buttons and knobs. It's a great jet but they definitely had help with it.
