Still Waters Posted February 17, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 17, 2010 A third of Britain's pet dogs are overweight, a study has found.Pet charity PDSA has warned dog owners are killing their animals with kindness. Too many fatty treats and a lack of exercise, which can slash pets' life-expectancy and cause them serious health problems, have been blamed for the obesity epidemic. The proportion of fat dogs has jumped from a quarter two years ago. More than 3.5million dogs are now thought to be too fat. In Glasgow more than half were found to be overweight. Northern Ireland had the UK’s healthiest dogs with fewer than one in five judged too big. Cats are also getting bigger with one in four now overweight, compared to one in five three years ago. And vet Sean Wensley said the ‘steady increase’ in pet obesity was even affecting hamsters and other small animals. Read more...
Cetacea Posted February 17, 2010 #2 Share Posted February 17, 2010 Our cat is getting a little podgy though she is nowhere near as bad as some of the cats on our road! We put her on a diet, to say she is unimpressed is putting it very mildly lol, she is not much inclined to play outside the times she chooses (which happens to be in the middle of the night) so I know it is an uphill struggle..... Our youngest cat lived outside, we found her under our shed when she was about 6 weeks old. We think that as a result of her having actually gone hungry before, that's why she behaves like an alley cat now. She'll eat anything and everything, finish off the other cat's food, literally rob food out of your mouth. She's a little fatty Balance it out though, our other cat is a skinny little runt. = no pet obesity in this house, right?
ohio traveler Posted February 17, 2010 #4 Share Posted February 17, 2010 Dogs and cats have a short life span as it is. If they want to lay around and get fat off junk food and get their belly scratched, I say let them. I know that's what I would want.

Queen in the North Posted February 17, 2010 #8 Share Posted February 17, 2010 And in another thread they're disuccing family planning cuz ppl claim there aren't enough resources and ppl are starving in ethiopia yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh Do you know what- often debilitating and painful- illnesses in pets are caused by obesity? So yes, read up on them, and then shun what eventually amounts to animal cruelty as trivial.

It's terrible that animals are being overfed and at the same time on this planet ppl out there are not being fed. It's plain weird is what it is. So no, im not being trivial. tigger Posted February 18, 2010 #12 Share Posted February 18, 2010 Dogs and cats have a short life span as it is. If they want to lay around and get fat off junk food and get their belly scratched, I say let them. I know that's what I would want. and their pets lives are made that bit shorter by ppl who feed them junky crap.. leaving them more susceptable to disease.. right, thats the attitude to have.. i took care of my bosses dog for 8 weeks when they went away.. its a lab (rather was.. it died a few years ago) and wieghed more than i did..64 kg.s (140.8 pounds) keep in mind i was about 50 kegs (110 pounds).. i kept telling them their dog was overwieght. and they insisted it was the breed.. (what fat???) the rubbish they feed this dog was a tin of pal a day which is about 500grams two to three cups of biscuits then a multitude of schmacko treats (which in equivilance to us.. one schmacko is like one mars bar.. full of fat).. all this garbage with no or little exercise... the dogs skin was terrible, as were its joints. i had to carry it up 3 flights of stairs as it usually refused to come upstairs to bed. when they left. the dog got 1/2 the tin for breakfast.. and a 1/2 cup of biscuits a night.. it had a quarter a stick of the schmacko, and i got it to walk. short distances, but it helped. the dog lost 8 kgs (17.6 pounds) by the time the owners got back. they thought i had starved the dog.. to which their daughter replied that i hadnt.. the dog was much healthier.. its skin and poos were much nicer, and it was a happier dog.. unfortunately the owners went back to their ways.. the dog stacked the weight back on and its medical problems went through the roof.. it ended up dieing due to them
